Hello everyone, I am writing from Italy, and I have a problem, I would like to purchase the kit https://intrepidcamera.co.uk/cart?variant_id=74 to transform my optical bench from a toyo 45 to Folding into an enlarger.
They tell me it's not possible because when I remove the frosted glass the hole that remains is too big to fit the kit.
Did any of you use it? how did he do?

Thanks Michele

Michele,

The Intrepid web site states, "The light source fits to the back of the Intrepid 4x5 (or most other 4x5 cameras) and attaches using the Graflok clips."

If your camera has a Graflok back, it will fit. You don't remove the entire panel the ground glass is on, just the glass itself by pressing the Graflok spring clips.

If your camera does not have a Graflok back, you are out of luck unless, maybe, you can find another back that is Graflok compatible.

Here's a link to an image of the Graflok back. https://www.keh.com/shop/4x5-graflok-bk-graflex-1.html

You can see the silver spring clips on the top half of the back. Pressing these releases the ground glass so you can use Graflok accessories like roll film holders and the Intrepid Enlarger Kit.

Hope this helps e buona fortuna,

Doremus

There is a way to remove only the frame that holds the ground glass . To remove the ground glass frame it usually done by pushing down on the ground glass frames springs and sliding the frame out leaving you with the correct opening (size or 4x5 holder) & a set of Graflok sliders. You do not need to remove the larger plate that the ground glass frame is attached.

Why don’t you ask Intrepid if it will mount to your camera if you are not sure?

On the top and bottom of your rear frame, just above and below the ground glass, there should be two little knurled buttons that are what you need to push and slide off the back to reveal the Graflok attachments I believe. This is the same as my Toyo GII.

That's just what I instructed him to do but you know the "Picture worth 1000 words" saying.

I know, now, that those are the frame springs but to the untrained eye they don't look like springs. I remember it took some doing to figure that out when I got my 6x12 back and tried to use it on my Toyo GII years ago. Certainly not as obvious as on a Crown Graphic or something like that with the sliding clips visible. He understandably went for the clips up top to take the entire frame off.

Thanks for your help, you are very kind, but my chassis plate is different and I don't have the springs to remove it from me is a single block, someone can recommend me a back that I could buy to replace mine and be able to mount the adapter to do it enlarger?

Apparently some Toyo 45A cameras, as discovered online, have spring backs. You would have to find a Graflok-style back of the same type for your camera. I'm not terribly familiar with Toyo's "Field" cameras so someone might have some further suggestions.

A cursory glance on eBay reveals these:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Exc-Toyo-View-G-4x5-Rotating-Back-Ground-Glass-From-Japan/324209235792

Might work if the Field and View backs are the same size frames?

You have the Graflok sliders - the two long black pieces above and below the groundglass, each with two diagonal slots in them. I've never touched this type of Toyo back, but I think those sliders are actually holding the groundglass frame in place. You need to slide them diagonally away from the groundglass frame, and then it should be removable. Then you would install the enlarger attachment and use the sliders to hold it in place.

Edit: Here's a picture to show what I mean

Ah! Shoot. Thanks for the correction. I had looked up the manual for the 45A (original) and it said to move those sliders to remove the groundglass back, but I didn't realize they meant the whole back would come off. The pictures in the scanned manuals are small. I now see that the ruler in the first set of pics shows the width is larger than the width of Graflok sliders.

I do not know the answer about whether that interchanges with the later models of Toyo Field 45 backs. It is different from the way that earlier Toyo Field / View backs attach, and (most/all?) of those earlier backs aren't international backs anyway.

Thanks for this I do but the problem is that the accessory has the size of the glass and not the entire block that comes off.

Guys, I'm not silly, my toyo is a one-piece glass and plate

I linked some backs on eBay for you.
