Greetings! Picked up this Linhof with a Schneider Xenar 18cm f4.5 Compur shutter. I paid very little for it, and it needs some sorting, but its all there and basically working. Shift is the only thing not working properly as the knob just spins, you can move it manually. Bellows are good, with just a few uneven folds. Glass is nice, aperture is good, shutter will need to be taken apart and cleaned as speed are about a stop slow.

My first real question has to do with film holders. I'm assuming I need the early pre war single sheet holders like pictured below. But I'm not even sure if this a 4x5 or 9x12 camera!

Heres a few quick pics of the cam itself...

Let me know what you guys think and if you need any more pics I'm happy to oblige!

Not a lot of data extant, nor do you offer enough to us

I think it looks like a spring back that takes DDS, not the slide in a slot holder

Better pics in several posts, with all you know may get us there

Measure the back in as many ways as you can think of, inside and out

I have a 5X7 version with spring back that can use modern DDS film holders

A few more pics of the back below, if anyone could post some pics or links to the film holders I need that would be great! Really hoping to use 4x5" and not 9x12cm

Serial number for the camera is no.16230 by the way. My guess is early 1930's

Definitely does not use standard 4X5 DDS film or plate

I just measured one and it’s 5” wide short side so it cannot fit

I think you should've bought holders with it

The type you need is hard to find

Where are u, if in EU it will be easier

Here is mine, notice the leaf spring back

These are Pre War, a lot of documentation was lost after Victory in Europe and parts...

Look up what those letters mean

Safe to say this is 9x12cm? Found a bunch on eBay, of course mostly in Europe, not terribly expensive. I want to use 4x5 sheets just because it would be easier to buy and more choices of course!

I found this back for sale, looks similar to what's on my camera but a bit more modern.

I learned a lot buying the wrong thing, can't help with that.

Did you find this thread, https://www.largeformatphotography.info/forum/showthread.php?106988-Linhof-Standard-Press-weird-film-back-help!&p=1064771&viewfull=1#post1064771

Thanks for that link! I would say that the back I posted above is very similar, maybe just an earlier version. The seller states its 9x12, which I would think seeing the depth of field scale in German. Anyone know if Post War Linhof holders are the same outside dimensions whether 9x12 or 4x5?

I took the back off my camera and looks like i can fit later backs, but thats just a guess without having one in my hands!

All Technikas since the first III of 1946 use the same size interchangeable back. A brand new 2020 Master technika back will fit fine on a 1946 Technika III camera. Yours looks the same but I have no proof of this being the case so I cannot confirm it is. If you get a later back let us know if it fits.

The 9x12 back you show above is from the earliest technika III model and is only for 9x12 sized thin plate holders which can hold 9x12 film sheathes and take 9x12 sheet film. It is too small for 4x5 film. Next Linhof made a spring back and eventually a graflex/international style back which had 3 versions to get to what is on the technikas of today...

Embdude thanks for your reply! Still haven't given up with this camera yet! Actually I found an early spring back like Tin Can shows, can I use modern 4x5 film holders with that style of back?

you would have to check with the seller. The pre-1946 spring backs are not well documented. The pre-1946 backs were not easily removed as the 1946 and forward models were so they may not be very interchangeable between models. My earliest Linhof id a Technika III of 1946, it has the 9x12 plate back but will accept easily any Technika back. As for your Linhof we need to determine if the back is the same, and if so then you will have lots of good options. The size of my back hole is 153.90mm...

This answer is confusing. All 45 Technika IV, v and MT models accept the same backs.

Nobody can say if modern film holder like Fidelity, Lisco, etc. work with this type spring back?

I guess this answers my question of the back I was looking at on first page will take modern film holders, its the same as number 2 in the attachment. Now if it fits my camera is another story, guess I need to buy to try!
