Hi all. What are the fastest options for 11x14 barrel lenses? I’m specifically looking for lenses in barrel and not looking for a lens in shutter. I’ve found some past posts about fast 11x14 lenses but those recs tended to be for lenses in shutters so asking in order to focus my search. Thanks for your help.

Once acquired a lens off a circa (maybe) 1970s opaque projector. Memory is not serving me well here, but think it was about 500mm and around f/3. Really wanted to try it on my 11x14, but it was too large to fit into a lens board for my 11x14 B&J Commercial view at the time. Regret selling it before getting a chance to try it out. State surplus stores once great places for acquiring these things at rock bottom prices, but little of them seem to be in the surplus stores for the past few years. Unfortunately many of them were trashed and eventually crushed because no one wanted them for any amount of money.

The 305mm f2.5 Aero Ektar might illuminate 11x14, and from experience the Sony 300mm f2 projection lens that comes up on eBay from time to time also illuminates the field. Can't speak for image quality for either. There are several longer projection lenses in the f3.5 range that will cover.

I use a Beseler Series III 18 in. opaque projector lens for wet plate. It is around f/3.6. It covers at least 20x20. They are not expensive.

Best bet might be 16" to 19" f4.5 Tessar,-type lens but if you need faster than f4.5 and don't want a projection lens:
There are a variety of f3.6 to f4 Petzval lenses, for example Dallmeyer 5A. These are not easy to find and are very expensive.
A few soft focus lenses (18" f4 Verito, 19" f4 Varium)
Aerial lenses: The 343mm f3.5 Eastman Anastigmat covers 11x14 at head and shoulders distance. In my experience the 12" f2.5 Aero-Ektar will not cover.

I have never seen a varium that was in a barrel - I think they might have been studio shutter only.

Thanks everyone. This was insightful. I have a Goerz Dagor 12” f6.8 which covers and is pretty fast but was curious what else I might be able to use for a project that I’m working on which will need the same coverage. Thanks for the help.

If you're looking for the speed for doing portraits, you also probably don't need perfect coverage at infinity.

A 300mm f/4.5 Tessar/Xenar will cover the 11x14 for anything from head shots to full-body portraits and it fits a Compound #5.
