I just started shooting 5x7 and have run into questions I never considered before. One is the use of center filters for lenses that did not require them in 4x5. While I never had a need for center filter with for example 90XL or 110XL in 4x5 the fall off is more noticeable with larger formats. The filter IVb for 72xl has an outer filter ring of 112 so I need to look for at least a yellow in that size. Any other options? I assume I can’t mount the yellow filter between the center and the lens.

I have the same problen with my 150mm, the latest version of this lens has 62mm filter threads on the back as opposed to mine. I am going glue a B+W filter ring in order to use coloured filter. It needed some work to fit the 59.5mm inner diameter :) Since the picture was taken, I have milled down another mm. I do hope hot glue can be used without hurting the lenses.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200423/14cc4cacd84bcb3608c60d12e2bf2c20.jpg

After a look online at the back of the 72-XL, I would recommend 3D-printed filter rings for 72 or 77mm filters, depending on the hole you put in to and what filters you have.

I put the required colour filter for B&W between the front of the lens and the Centre Filter.

I'm sure the purists would say this is not correct.

However, when I have done some cos^4 calculations, I realise that no Centre Filter accurately corrects the light fall off - so IMHO - compromising the Centre Filter performance by adding a filter between it and the lens won't make much difference.

I keep an eye out for vignetting.

I used to mount the Pol filter behind the CF on my 72mm.

No issues as far as I could tell.

Once upon a time in need, I put the color filter on the rear lens when I use the center filter. I have printed images with and without the center filter and there is not much difference especially if working with open sky at top of frame.

What do you do when you need a graduated ND filter?

Personally I just use a darkslide in front of half the lens for 1/2 or 2/3 the exposure. Saves me hundreds of dollars.

On the other hand if you are using a 72XL w/ CF constantly and in critical applications, perhaps buy the above or similar solutions.
