Beautiful camera. I'm only shooting 8x20 so I'm 4 inches short.
Same!
I've cropped a couple 16x20 prints to 12x20, seems like a nice format. After lugging an 8x20 around it seems like it wouldn't be much bigger, but... :)

Agree!
Thanks! Yes, pretty exciting not to have light-leaks or other issues that plagued me with the old 8x20 when I first started (took me over a year to get my first successful image from that camera).
I also "adapted" one of the film holders this camera came with to shoot 8x20 so I can still use that format...if it works. Haven't tested it out yet.

Indeed CB, I think this format is a bit more relevant than the 8x20 long-and-thin negative which was hard to find compositions with. Also I am traveling to Myakka next month so maybe I will find Clyde in his natural habitat! :)
diversey, I assumed it only covered just so, but here I used a generous amount of fall as you can see in the photo I posted in the "Setup" thread. I would guess there's at least 600mm of coverage. Of course I am at f/64 so that helps.

Beautiful! That print could change my mind about HP5. I have always felt that it was too gray for my tastes. But clearly not in Chattahoochee. :-)

I seem to like HP5 more and more as the format gets larger. I'm not a fan in 35mm. The reciprocity-induced contrast boost seems to help.

Bryan thats wonderful.
I like that the clarity of the water offers a glimpse of rocks below, the complimentary diagonals in upper and lower right...coinciding to add a bit of directional emphasis for the waters flow. That bolt of water in the upper left-middle...could be bothersome if it were broader/brighter, but just right as is, and the "creamy brilliance" of water over rock, a perfect example of allowing bits of scale to migrate up into the "high eights" (assuming that my screen is translating this)...just enough to be maximally effective, without going too far.
Also the format itself...is so very appropriate to capture the broad sweep of a river, and just shy (for me at least) of going overboard, as can anything truly 2:1 (like 12x24) or broader (again, for my eyes). Perfect!
The only thing my eyes are still reaching for is to see just a very tiny bit more into some darks/shadows - but my guess is that your print will show just this much. Its been my experience, at least with work that I've posted which is similar (in terms of subject matter and tonal scale) to your example here, that darks/shadows which I've rendered very dark, and yet with some detail, tend to go quite black on my screen, to the extent that the very minimal (but important) amount of detail there is lost.
Thank you very much John. I am glad you saw the leading diagonal branches, which is really what drove me to make this image as it felt "complete."
Agree on the screen. I think also the size you see on the screen, being much smaller than real life, affects the subjective shadow rendering.

Martin,
Thank you for your kind comment. The 12X20 negatives from that trip were misplaced for many years and I only recently located them, along with quite a number of 5X7 negatives made the same year at the the Great Sand Dunes. It is kind of odd looking at the work since it was lost to my memory for so long, but comforting how looking at it now brings back so many memories, not just of the photographs but also of other people and events related to that trip. I digitized the negatives earlier this year with very high resolution scans and am now planning to print a small portfolio of the work sometime next year.

Great image, Corran. The well placed depth of field stands the Volunteers out in the field.
Also it looks like they are waiting for someone to volunteer to open that keg of beer.
Thank you both!
So when I was loading film that morning, I opened a "new" (old, taped up) box of HP5+ film. I immediately recognized the notch codes as being Portra 160NC. It was also not even in a bag...so I couldn't be sure of condition. I loaded a single sheet and shot this image. Obviously there is fogging, possibly from age or possibly from storage w/o a bag (perhaps lower sheets having less fogging). I'll have to shoot a few more sheets to see, but overall the results are interesting and I'm not likely to ever get a chance to shoot color 12x20 after the few sheets of Portra included with the sale of the camera.
Still with the 450mm, at f/22:
https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbfq74kOQeAu1sGB6nrlUZHvmfHL66GPyNDwVkRRNrNz9XLgVheUKeUDWrmhGEoWu6OMWB0BnKBIRby2O_OWQx7copAbQZI79iEv1eQze_Zjd_Z6PfJPt4F2hJADhQzSlsiFM0-bCSvysFWIn-7EFHGs9Ptk9o7TbBkq-AUbxlZOjt3Orr3XPohfzm/s1000/pickettsmill-9262ss.jpg

Oh, that’s cool, don’t see 12x20 color very often. Just curious how did you get the sheet processed? Just curious because I have some 12x20 Portra, probably from the same run as yours.
Roger
I tray processed it. I have steel tanks I do 4x5 in (dip and dunk), so I warmed up the chemicals in them. Then I poured them in the 12x20 trays and developed. I'm sure I lost a couple degrees in the process but at this point I'm guessing it doesn't matter much :).

12x20 contact print.
How do you align the negative and photo paper perfectly when you do contact print?
Lovely - at first I thought it was a salt print on textured paper, but then realized thats just paper towels below it. I align my contact prints by taping the edge of the negative and use the top edge of the frame for the paper. For 5x12 I have a thin paper masking guide in an 11x14 frame aligned so that I get 1" around the image on all sides by just dropping the paper on top of the guide and negative. In your larger size it might be a worthy investment to have a custom contact print frame made.

12x20 contact print.
How do you align the negative and photo paper perfectly when you do contact print?
I can only speak for myself here, which may not apply to your situation.
I use a big piece of ANR plexiglass with metal handles on the edge to weigh down the negative and paper. Since there's no lip or edge, I can align the paper and negative easily. Back when I started doing contact prints, I just used 16x20 paper or 20x24 paper cut in half for 8x20 and 12x20 prints exactly. I could tell in the darkroom if the paper / negative was misaligned.
That said, lately I've used 20x24 paper cut down to about 14x24 for contact prints, giving me a bit more wiggle room both for the print and for mounting with the edges showing (about 13x21). I can use the strip I cut off for test strips.
However I am experimenting with photo corners for mounting to foam board as a different way of presentation, so might go back to the exact print size method.
Nice print btw.
