Social distancing is easy to show with lonely pictures, but it doesn't have to be boring. I'm still out taking photos. I have a big backlog of film to develop and scan, so here are some cell phone snaps of how I'm participating in quarantine.

MMW+C's Brenton Hamllton offered some online lectures on the history of photography, which is a subject he loves and dives deep into. This is just late 1960's to present and will take 12 weeks. A topic I don't well understand. Two online classes of forty people filled to capacity in just a couple days after announcement. People from all over can learn without having to travel to Maine and most of the students are not from Maine. This is an age of art photography for which I have a mix of skepticism and misunderstanding and confusion, so with no evening activities happening, it's a nice opportunity to be a student.

My work in IT means I get to help with things like this... Our church's pastor with his new audience. I set things up for simultaneous youtube and facebook live streaming. Each laptop has a lapel microphone in it's audio jack for decent sound, and the built in webcams work well in good light on these business Lenovo laptops. (External webcams are more scarce than tp and hand sanitizer) If you want to make eye contact with people, look at the little green light at the top of the screen.

I have lousy hearing with loud tinnitus, but like music. I cannot hear full range. Got 2 Shure Vocal Masters for $20, hooked to 20 watt Sony which adds all inputs possible. Alexa is disc jockey playing almost anything. 20 clean watts is more than enough for these 60" tall boxes with 10 speakers.

Last May, we saw a Bewick's wren taking a sudden interest in my bike shorts that I had hung to dry in our apartment's the micro back "yard." It was trying to build a nest in the shorts, so when I went to take them in, nesting materials fell out. It seemed rather distressed by the loss of its nest, so I felt guilty and bought a birdhouse (not a proper wren house, more of a generic one). This year, the same or a new wren finally took interest in the house and with its mate started building a nest inside. They're quite fast, and I'm not a good wildlife photographer (and I buy the Fuji XE series for the small size, not the "fast" AF system, the XT series would be better for that), so getting them in focus is a bother, but here's a few of the current occupants:

This is something of an iconic image for Canadians. There were a whole series of these by several Group of Seven painters in the early to mid 20th century, the most famous by Tom Thomson but yours reminds me of this one by AJ Casson:

There's a wisteria in our micro back "yard," so I took a few shots today during a break in the rain, hoping to get good droplets.

First with the Kamlan 50/1.1 lens, and you don't buy an inexpensive f/1.1 lens for sharpness. When you add an 11mm macro extension tube, the "sharpness" gets downright "artistic!" ;)

Kids have been at home now for weeks. Years ago my daughter and I explored short attention span bird photography. With a little surprise some bluebirds moved back in this past week. So we tried again with the bird photography. With a wifi-enabled DSLR we can set up the camera and 70-200/2.8 on a tripod, come inside and let the birds acclimate, then click away on an app. There's a bit of lag in the system that we're working out, but best of the bunch from a few days ago:

I like this image, and somehow the color enhances the subject for me. Did you do any split toning in your post processing?

My rural state isn't under complete "lock down," mainly because it's already low density. I can drive 10 minutes and be somewhere that I see no one else all day. I've been taking advantage of that.🙂

Today I returned to a bridge to make an 8x10 tin. Camera was a Kodak 2D, Voigtlander Petzval c.1862 12 inch. After taking a couple of 4x5 tests to nail down exposure I did an 8x10. I'm using a Stenopeika holder I received in January. I've had some inconsistent problems with it, mainly sometimes the dark slide scrapes the emulsion! This happened on the image below, which otherwise would have been quite nice. I took a close look at what is going on and think I found the reason. The slide is very stiff going in & out, and I think when being pushed in it sometimes bows in a little, catching the plate. There might be two solutions. First I'll try lubricating the slide grooves with something like furniture polish wax or teflon. If that doesn't work then I'll try using jewelers polish on a dremel to maybe remove a little bit of thickness. Otherwise this is a very solid and well built holder.

Clean the slide with a little furniture polish, front, back, and edges. Rub pretty vigorously. They get a lot of gunk on them. Then rub the edge 1/2" or so all around with a dryer sheet. Again, rub pretty vigorously. You want to build up some heat and polishing action. I thought the dryer sheet thing was BS until I tried it. It's very convenient way to apply a small amount of conveniently anti-static lubricant.

Really like this image-- it has a pleasing balance and offers a full frame with lines that give a sense of depth. And though I'll be interested to see a new version when you get the holder fixed up, I have to admit that the damage to the image actually kind of resonates a bit with our current moment...

Flags throughout NJ are flying at 1/2 mast due to the deaths from Corona Virus. I stopped the car coming back from delivering food to my 91-yr-old mother-in-law to take this image. After the fact I realized that it was a metaphor, combining the new life of spring with the sad reality of the time we are living in. The scan is from an enlarged contact print (i.e. unmanipulated); I will print this one for real (fiber paper with usual darkroom manipulation), and there is detail in the tree trunk and branches which doesn't show here.

Agree completely. I was hand-holding the Rollei, and concentrating on keeping the flag pole vertical and the framing with the tree, I didn't even realize the car was there until I developed the film and made a contact sheet. I immediately felt the same as you. Would love to redo the image, but my experience is that often just enough things change that the redo is not successful either. Will have to see.

Six inches of snow, 30 mph winds, and temperature heading to 15 degrees. Feels more like i've been pushed back to Christmas rather than Easter. It's turning into the "upside down" year so I suppose the weather is appropriate.

I've knocked off work for awhile, waiting for things to calm down a bit. This has given me time to practice tin type photography. I've been keeping within a four hour circle of home so I don't have to stay out overnight. Still, there's a lot to see within that range. With a fairly short drive I can be in deserted places. One of these places is a favorite--St. Procopious Church. It's two hours west within sight of the Missouri River, south of I-90. It's a retired church with a small cemetery. It sits alone in the middle of several sections of open fields. It's a tiny church and looks even smaller in its setting.

Since it was Good Friday, I decided to photo the crucifix in the cemetery. Wet plate photography is something you don't do in a hurry and I had plenty of time to wander around reading the gravestones. I found a couple from 1918, both for children. It took me several attempts to make a nice 8x10 plate but I finally got one after a few hours. The church is one of my favorite places--it's nice to photo and is peaceful there. I hope to go back once the weather warms again.

There is a short story attached to this, and probably a universal truth about photography. I posted a similar image in this thread, #112. In that image, taken handheld with my Rollei 6006, I was concentrating on showing the relationship between the flowering trees of springtime and the flag at half-mast due to Covid-19, and didn't even see the car which drove by just as I clicked the shutter. I saw the car when I developed the film, and it bothered me, just as it bothered Philip who offered a valued critique. So I returned on the next fairly sunny day (we are getting a lot of grey days here in NJ) determined to redo the image. This time I brought my 4x5, so I could set up on the tripod and watch for cars, people, etc. (plus I simply enjoy using the 4x5 more). I think the redo was successful, but revisits are never quite the same, both because the field-of-view of 80mm on 120, and 80mm on 4x5 are a bit different (the fact that my wide-angle LF is an 80mm is coincidence), but more importantly weather and lighting are never really the same. Also, while both are HP5+ developed Pyrocat, the tonalities are different, accentuated because this is a scan of the negative (haven't had time to print yet), while image #112 was a scan of an RC work print.

I haven't been going to work lately, but I'm hardly sitting home watching Dr. Phil either. I've been loading up some film and heading out to prowl the small towns. There's always something interesting to be found.🙂 On yesterday's trip I cruised through the towns in extreme eastern South Dakota north of Brookings/U.S. 14 and east of I-29. I took a few shots with my Chamonix 4x5 on Ilford FP4.

I didn't meet very many people, which was sort of my intent. The few I did meet were friendly with perhaps one exception. That was a guy who had his own junk yard in Astoria. He had about 100 junk cars & trucks on about 5 acres, plus junk refrigerators and even a Lowe's shopping cart missing a couple of wheels! Everything was covered with a mound of trash. He saw me setting up my camera and came over and told me, "None of this is for sale!." I replied, "No problem!"😂

Here's one of a short series I took trying to embody by days looking for another job (having lost mine due to the current state of things). I've been taking a few around the house photos - in 4x5 no less (because why not). Have a few ideas for some interesting things with an LED lamp I have. Been spending some time going back to my other hobby (music) while I can't go outside and have spare time on my hands, but do try to keep the photography muscles flexed every now and again.

Voluntarily taking April off from work has given me a lot of time to explore the odd corners within a 250 mile radius of my house. Yesterday I continued up the South Dakota/Minnesota border from U.S. 212 and headed north. The land here is dominated by a huge glacial moraine several hundred feet high. Twelve thousand years ago it split the Laurentide Glacier. Great piles of debris give the landscape on top a lumpy appearance. The ground is full of small rocks and isn't very productive farm land. Farms are very large and people are few. There are small fading towns scattered on the plateau and its base. The region was named "Couteau des Praire" by French trappers. It's an odd corner of the state pock marked by thousands of glacial ponds and lakes. I haven't spent much time up there so it is fertile ground for exploration! Round trip was about 250 miles which made for a nice day. All photos taken with the Chamonix 045n and FP4+ film.

1. Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Kranzburg. Three fourths of the town's residents are in the large cemetery. The town was once vibrant enough to support many businesses but has been fading ever since the railroad pulled out and the the highway to nearby Watertown was paved in the 1930s. I briefly talked to the village priest as he walked to his car. He said he had been busy showing his older parishioners how to attend Mass online.

2. Kleigle's Garage, Goodwin. I was immediately attracted to this one. It's a classic garage! Bud, the owner, had just finished helping a customer so I chatted with him & Ratchet, the garage cat. He said the garage opened in 1916 as a repair shop and Ford dealership and has been in continuous operation. He also runs a small bar that's built into the shop. There was a large barrel of empty beer cans just inside the door. The place reeked of antiquity and stale beer.

3. LaBolt Farmers Grain, LaBolt. I love these huge grain complexes and wanted to take a photo. Since the place was open I went in and asked to take a photo. They don't care if you do, but it's good to let them know who you are and what you're doing. The complex is worth millions of dollars and is the economic life blood of the town and many surrounding families. The facility manager told me there was a truck coming very soon that was going to take on a load of corn. I thanked him for the tip, set up my camera and waited. It took only 45 seconds to fill the entire truck with about 1,500 bushels!


Next week I'll continue on north to the North Dakota line.

From living in North America I know there is a great difference in the understanding of mileage and time versus that of Europe.
Your ‘Northern Prairies’ are very sparse in population and I guess that the understanding and enforcement of quarantine is different in your area versus mine on the Island of Anglesey [which is joined to the mainland by two bridges] in particular and Europe in general.
Here, the police can and do stop vehicles and query the intent of the driver’s journey. If the journey is not for essential purposes [food or medical reasons] then a fine in levied and the car forced to return to its starting point.
Also it is recommended that person to person physical contact is limited to a space of 2m, and self isolation within the home recommended.

Thank you, I cleaned it up a little in PS but, The print looks very similar. I didn't need to dial any contrast into my Omega color head either. I did some burning and dodging in various locations. Photo shop isn't one of my strengths. I know just enough to share from time to time.

I like this image, and somehow the color enhances the subject for me. Did you do any split toning in your post processing?

Sometimes I find something truly special in my wanderings. That was the case yesterday as I prowled the gravel roads in extreme northeastern South Dakota near Stockholm. I came across the "Brown Earth Indian Church." It was built in 1877 by Sisseton Waphaton Sioux and is a log structure. The church was built on a homestead claimed by Daniel Renville, the first pastor. He was a French/Indian ordained Presbyterian Minister. He and his wife led a congregation of about 44 Sisseton Wapheton Sioux. Renville's wife died a few years later and is buried in the church cemetery. She was 29. The homesteading Indians were slowly pushed out of the area and the church was abandoned in 1892. I couldn't find out what became of Rev. Renville. The church housed several congregations after that and was saved from destruction by members of the town in the early 20th C. It was restored by local WW1 veterans in the 1920s. It's now owned and maintained by the Grant County. There are still a few memorial services held here, and is available for weddings. Inside the church there is a copy of the 1877 dedication program. It listed three hymns sung. Opening hymn was "Doxology," second hymn was "Bringing in the Sheaves," and the closing hymn was "All Hail the Power of Jesus' Name." I'm familiar with all three and we still sing them today in my church.

I live in a very calm Parisian suburb and doubly so having the communal cemetery as my nearest neighbor (across the street). I cant explain why but although i have always liked walking about and enjoying the stillness of things inside, i have never really thought much photographing in there. Moreso when there is a burial happening. Out of respect i guess.

The first picture I took officially during the quarantine: My daughter came back from an exchange program in France late in March and I decided to finally give my long-dormant Ansco 5x7 a spin, using some pretty hairy old paper for negatives. It's not Weston or Avedon quality, but I like the mood in this portrait.

Renville's wife died a few years later and is buried in the church cemetery. She was 29. The homesteading Indians were slowly pushed out of the area and the church was abandoned in 1892. I couldn't find out what became of Rev. Renville.

An ongoing (unfortunately!) series of closures in NJ due to Covid-19. I have been photographing parks and playgrounds near home which the police have sealed off to avoid crowding (i.e. violations of social distancing rules). I have tried to group the images into sets which have some visual similarity or relationship to each other. All are HP5+, Pyrocat-HD, taken with my Rollei 6006/80mm which is much faster to use (and not as attractive to people and questions) than my 4x5. These are all scans from 8x10 RC work prints.

This color image was made on May 1st with my iPhone 11, while the two B&W images were made on May 7th with my Linhof Master Technika 4x5. This large, old and spreading oak tree is in Caledonia, Wisconsin. I like to photograph such gnarly old oaks with lots of character in the early spring before they leaf out, because you get a true silhouette and can see all the texture in the bark. I've photographed this oak tree before, and it must be well over 100 years old and has a trunk about 5-6 feet in diameter at chest height. When I got to it in early May the property owners had put up the sign and US flags, which I hadn't expected but made sense since this tree is a local favorite along a fairly busy stretch of rural two-lane highway. You can see from the color image that late morning was fairly sunny, so the bark on the trunk and major limbs showed a lot of contrast. But when I went back earlier on the morning of May 7th (two B&W images) there was a high, thin ceiling of clouds and pretty nice and consistent light (with no wind in the flags). I used a 90mm Nikkor f8 (landscape image) and a 110mm Super Symmar XL lens (portrait image) with my 4x5, and the films and prints came out pretty good. The two B&W images attached were Epson V750 Pro scans of the films, edited in Lightroom. I may return to get some close-ups of the rough hewn texture in the main trunk, or where some of the major limbs spread from the central stem. I feel this tree speaks of strength and resilience, which is in harmony with the messages in the hand-made sign, and needed in this time.

I hadn't realized how horrifically slow membrane keyboards were to type on until I bought a "gaming" keyboard (real mechanical switches with tactile feedback and back-lighting). My typing speed jumped 10-20 WPM, just because of the tactile feedback. Going back to the $5 membrane keyboards is painful.

Nuthin fancy...a digital image taken at the far end of an evening bike ride. I sold my sedan and bought an electric cargo bike. I took a test ride...6 miles out, the first two miles being relatively flat, then a 1600 foot elevation gain over the next four on a mostly paved 1.5 to 2 lane road. Fun ride home!

This is looking across the Mad River Valley as the summer fog is coming in. This spot is about 15 miles to the ocean and 65 miles to where its upper watershed bumps into the Yolla Bolly - Middle Eel Wilderness where I worked in for 12 seasons. Several acres at the very top of the watershed of one of the forks of the Mad is in the wilderness...so even after 30 years since leaving that work, I still probably drink a drop or two of water from the wilderness every year or two...or flush it down the toilet...not quite as romantic.

I posted the image in the hiking thread, so I thought I'd recycle it here anyway since I already wrote the above. A little to the right and hidden by a small rise is a medium sized grow, my guess it is a permitted operation. In the other direction, up the road and around the next bend, someone was target practising, using a lot of expensive ammo. Permitted grows are not allowed to have weapons on the premises. I had worked my way up out of the trees to this view, it was getting late, and decided I needed to go no further.

Time to go dig in the yard...I'm enlarging the sunken campfire pit area, and making a small hill upon which I will plant a gifted root-bound meyers lemon. Such is the retired life in the time of Covid-19.

Whooop kudos on the bike!!! I have a Radrover cargo bike. I still need to figure out how to attach a big ol tripod (I have a bogen 3036 or something like that) onto the foot rests on the back and a pelican case. Ebikes are the way to go!!!

My Ries A100 and head will get strapped to the top of the rack...I'll have up to a foot hanging off the back, less if I take off the head and stash it in a pannier. Still working on how to pack the 8x10 and the 11x14 on the bike (one at a time)...5x7 will be easy (note how easily it carries my complete digital system!)

I packed mules for ten years in the wilderness -- odd enough loads of all kinds that I should be able to figure it out. I have a backpack trip (w/ 5x7) coming up in a couple days, so I'll get back to figuring how to pack the bike when I return. Then a couple of nights bike-camping perhaps.

I don't have the panniers on yet in this photo...

A cropped version of my entry for WPPD. This was shot with long expired Kodak 160NC that had probably been in the holder for 10 years and likely expired in 2006.The holder with film was acquired off Craigslist. I processed it with a Cinestill C41 kit in an Stearman SP8x10 daylight tray. Overall quite happy with the results considering the unknown history of the film and my first time developing C41.

I shot this with a Harman Titan 8x10 pinhole camera. I cropped the image because it had to much foreground. I leveled the camera carefully so that my verticals would be vertical. I really need to make a 8x10 pinhole camera with front rise as this foreground problem keeps occurring. As a large format photographer and a carpenter I always want my verticals correct.
