View Full Version : My mistake
Hi!
I joined this forum because I love analogue, old fashioned engineering and photography. I don't have any experience in LF photography, but it’s just too tempting and I’m afraid I will be sucked into in over time.
The largest format photography I use is three by three inch: Polaroid. As a small introcution, some pictures from my trip last month to the North Cape (https://goo.gl/maps/Va2y2ZL54dMEd7ZQ8).

Ciao!

Most important, don't make the mistake to look through a 8x10" camera, it is addictive, don't make that mistake. See here min 0:40 what can happen, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V40Mz0mVotg
Also, if possible, avoid any contact with carbon printing, specially that genuinely made without digital negatives, the most dangerous class, it has some kind of authenticity that's also addictive.
There is another hazzard: glass, see how "sick" :) this (also) dutchman ended:

By no means LF is better or worse than Polaroid for photography, but LF gathers an impressive heritage that's worth to explore.

Yes, mistakes tend to channel one into alt opportunities. I learned to enjoy them (if there is such) and grow from it.

Yes, and there are no problems either, only challenges and opportunities to excel.
There will be lessons, probabily expensive lessons :)
Anyway, my experience after two weeks: many nice pictures to view on the forum, pretty camera's and I like the slow pace of the forum. It seems to be very well moderaded as well. Two things I don't understand:
- Why is there a maximum of four links/pictures/smileys in a post? We're not in the eighties any more. :) Quite a few posts are divided as a workaround, this does not improve the readability.
- There seems to be a "for sale" section I'm not allowed to view. Maybe you don't want to attract users that come here only to sell their equipement? Or you don't want to sell outside the community? For me, this would be a very useful section to understand the market a little better. I know I need to be patient, but once again, patience is so eighties :) Only being able to view the section without posting seems harmless to me.
Anyway, I'll stay connected!

If you host the photos on your own site and link them, you aren't limited to four pictures per post. We use donated server space and these limits help us use it wisely. Nearly all the photos I post are hosted on my own web site, for example, which gives me complete control over them.
After 30 days (couple more weeks for you), you'll be able to see the For-Sale sub-forums. Please read the guidelines about the for-sale forum, where you'll see that nobody except the seller can post there anyway. Restricting it from view protects sellers from spammers and bots who usually get excised before 30 days are up, and it gives people some experience with the vibe of the forum (and the other members a look at the newbie) before expecting trust. This has been discussed at great length on many occasions, so there is no need to discuss it again.
If you aren't patient enough for the 80's, I seriously wonder what there is about large format that attracts you--nothing in photography requires more patience, except maybe astrophotography. Consider this a test. :) Don't worry, whatever good deals there are will still be there, but the sellers may not be able to mail anything to you for the next many weeks anyway.

Yes we are, but don't worry, it's no big issue. Just like the wait to see the "for sale" section. I'll survive... :)

Boy am I embarassed--you are right. My trick gets around the pixel size maximum for forum storage, but this version of vBulletin makes no distinction between the number of stored and externally link images.

... mistakes... lessons... challenges... opportunities... heck, even Denney’s embarrassment...
Some of these actually result in art so why not keep up the good work!

Hahahaha. Don't worry, I'll work around it, just like I did in my opening post.
There's an argument to keep it this way. You can also deeplink youtube video's. You don't want too many of those, because that does cost a lot of bandwidth.
Hi all,
I've decided to buy a Graflex Crown Graphic before I really plunge into the deep. I placed a "WTB" right here (https://www.largeformatphotography.info/forum/showthread.php?161055-LF-Graflex-Crown-Graphic), let me know if anyone has any suggestion or tips right here :)

Hopefully, I have some time to take my first pictures this weekend.
Please tell me you're not shooting with such a long center column extension. A sure recipe for blurred photos.
and the front extension should be reduced

The extension is just to show off the pretty bellows. :)
I loaded my first sheets of film today and bought chemicals to develop, I hope I have some time this weekend to play around.
Every day you put off shooting makes it easier to put it off the next day. Every day you shoot and develop makes it more difficult to put off.
Working from home this morning I was reminded of a composition in the back yard. Wind had picked up and the light I wanted was gone by the time I finished a teleconference. I missed the excitement of making the shot, the excitement of developing the negative that I wanted and the excitement of creating the contact print that I visualized.
Took four rather random pictures this weekend, just as a practice. I don't have a light meter, just guessed a little and it all worked out really well.

I need to start looking for a proper scanner.
I found a box with a bulb
210252
Way better already.
210253
Buy anyway, looking for a scanner :)
I bought an old Epson 3200. Much easier than messing with a camera.

I do still need to het used to shooting B&W. The red hat look great in colour, but it disappears in the picture :)
