gabbs pole line road

An imperfect plate. I have some bad film. The dust isn't "dust" it's an emulsion problem.

The Gabbs pole line road is an improbable span of power line poles across a barren waste from nowhere to nowhere. It was necessary for the production of magnesium during the war effort of WWII. I often use this road on travel to Northern Nevada simply because it is empty. You have to endure 46 miles of dirt road to enjoy the solitude but it is the shortest route, and during crazy times, perhaps the best.

The lens is a Turner Reich 12" on full plate.

I took Jungo Rd from Winnemucca to Gerlach in 1999, at that time it was rough and sandy, 100 miles and never saw another vehicle until I approached a bicycle rider going to Trego Hot Springs (https://www.google.com/maps/place/Trego+Hot+Springs/@40.7701288,-119.1127396,3a,75y,90t/data=!3m8!1e2!3m6!1sAF1QipNZNdAaY93E_TTHa0BBj-H5YfQhAXqBL_qILG41!2e10!3e12!6shttps:%2F%2Flh5.googleusercontent.com%2Fp%2FAF1QipNZNdAaY93E_TTHa0BBj-H5YfQhAXqBL_qILG41%3Dw114-h86-k-no!7i4032!8i3024!4m5!3m4!1s0x809fbc20f6534721:0x142dcad9844be167!8m2!3d40.7701288!4d-119.1127396). I gave him water and off he went east.

When I left I took the much longer main road back to Winnemucca and had a great steak at the best place in town, a Basque steakhouse, which I see has gone to crap.

I never knew the hot spring had a name. I drove that road (Gerlach to Winnemucca) in winter...spent the night at Trego Hot Springs...Dec. 7, 1990. It was starting to get dark and I could see a whiff of steam off down this side road. No one there...not very developed like it seems to be now. Mine trains zooming by regularily! Soaked a little in the morning to warm up and then hit the road. I hadn't thought of that in awhile -- did not realize Burning Man is right there.

Early evening, I've pitched my tent in the Olympic Mountains (Wash. state).

Down there is the FS road I ascended to get here. :D

I'm looking across Puget Sound to the Cascade Mountains, a very different mountain range. On the horizon is Mt. Baker. A volcano – sleeping for now – she's just up the road from Mt. Saint Helens & Mt. Rainier. Back in the 1970s, I remember she spit a little bit of steam, people got very nervous, then she settled down. She's been mostly quiet ever since. However, I'm sure she watched Mt. Saint Helens lose her temper (in 1980) with great approval. It's only a matter of time before she wakes up and gets just as angry.

The best thing about that road is the train

As from my Chicago studio, I could walk 2 blocks, get on that train, get off inside ORD airport and be anywhere in the world quickly

Where I am now, I have to get in a car for 10 miles to do the same

edit, actually I can walk 3 miles to my regional and do the same

Just for fun, here’s a twist on the road theme – the abandoned road of a glacier.

When the glacier retreated the same way it came, it tossed some large rocks out the window, like beer cans on the highway. Check out that big one, middle right.

Thanks to climate change, I fear this road will be abandoned for quite some time. :(

I am not sure if I missed this originally but today it struck me as a marvel of composition. the top cut off by the clouds and the curve of the road leaving the picture frame only to come back in and leave again. All too likely I would have turned to the right and tried to include the complete road. But no you went for a composition that is fresh and dynamic and unique. Really well done!

johnmsanderson
20-Nov-2021, 19:35
thank you for the complement. That was my original idea, to have the road in the frame, but for some reason this composition was more interesting, if perhaps not as expected. I also like that the road's path is not known, it could be a continuation of the road or be a junction, leading to somewhere else. Man, the road really is an interesting thing isn't it? Wyoming is a stunning place.
