A few more shots that signs play an important role in. The photo of Mrs Byrd standing in front of her menu board was shot around 2005. My wife and I had breakfast there every Friday morning. We were able to have a substantial meal for a total of $6. The diner was built by Mrs Byrd and her husband in 1947. Shortly after I made the photo she sold the diner. I sat vacant crumbling into the earth until a month ago when it was demolished. The diner sat at the intersection of the Dixie and Lee highways, Dixie Lee Junction as it is known.
Signs of faith were once very common in Appalachia where I live but in recent years have become very scarce.

Thinking of Lady Bird and her push to remove highway signs.
When driving in corn country the many tiny serial signs that told a story mile after mile were wonderful.

The Castro district of San Francisco was named for Castro Street which bears the name of the family of Mexican general Jose Castro (1808-1860).
The Castro Theater is on Castro St.
The family name Castro means Castle in Spanish and other Romance languages.
That is a sweet shot, Thomas.

I photographed Popcorn over a period of three years and made nearly 1000 images of him. I’ll post a thread one day on him and post images of his whiskey operation. Here’s are two, one with me talking with him shot by my writer and audio man Tom Jestet and one of Popcorn preparing the still for another run. The still was one of 3 1000 gallon stills he had. You can see what a tiny guy he was. Popcorn weighed in at 85 pounds.
4 hours after leaving his still house, one of his helpers set fire to it which led to his arrest that night. His helper was angry with him because he was spending too much time with the woman that became his 12th wife and not spending enough time making whiskey.

Been there many times. They used to be one of my clients. Certainly a good place to see artifacts from old Appalachia.
If you take a look at post 1 & 2 the concrete cross in the ground and the one standing in the second post we’re put there by the same guy that did the sign in your post. I think the name was Mays. He lived in a house that was shaped like across and went around the country spreading the message on those signs. I know where three remain. He also took 1/2 pint whiskey bottles and put little crosses inside of them much like as hip in a bottle. He handed those out to people. The one of the cross laying in the yard is on the property if either his son or nephew. Can’t remember what he said when I met him. Mays lived in Tazwell / New Tazwell TN.

Thanks for the additional info on Mays Don. He must have been an "interesting" person. I photographed Norris extensively as part of a project I did on the uses of Eminent Domain. It has an interesting history as a company town for the TVA and the dams that were constructed in the area. Shortly before it was developed the federal government hired Lewis Hine to document the people living in the area—many of his photos look like they were taken in the 1700s if photography had existed then.

TVA was one of my largest clients at one time. Bob Collar was their main in-house photographer and a very good photographer too, he was a very good friend. TVA has possession of all of Hine’s negatives until about 20 years ago and bob let me go through the original negs and select some images I’d like prints from. I picked several and Bob made a set of archival prints from the original negs. I have a couple of them hanging on my wall. A couple years later all the negs were duplicated and the originals were sent to the National Archive.
I really love Hine’s work. He did quite a bit of imagery of cotton mills in the area I live.
Norris is a sweet little town. My wife and I considered retiring there’s few years ago but We decided on another slightly bigger town nearby and I’m still in the retirement process. If you want to retire in a beautiful, quiet and safe area, where I live is the place.

In those days the word Turn(s) had specific sexual connotations.
Hence the sign NO TURNS has or had meaning.

The cheap trick is to stencil "GUARANTEED NO DIGITAL" backwards on an old white tee shirt, stand under an "official " sign, take the picture with a Mamiya C330 (the shirt reads right in the waist level finder!), and flip the negative in the enlarger. And yes, the Speed Graphic has the viewfinder on the wrong side, watch is on the wrong wrist, belt buckle reversed. Photograph was made years ago when a famous colleague pestered me to enter a photographic competition he was running. The submissions had to be in JPG format. I sent this instead.

Tony,
Your San Francisco photo brought a smile to my face and a tear to my eye. Back during those years my parents vacationed in San Francisco. One year they were there when the Gay Parade was going on. When they returned home they told me a story about the parade. My father was a person that never met a stranger and soon joined in the parade. He and the participants he joined had a blast together. My father bought a joint from one of marchers in the parade which horrified my mother. She thought they would be busted at any second and the minute they got back to their hotel she flushed the joint down the toilet. They have both been gone for over twenty years and seeing your photo made my day. Thanks.
Regards,
Pat

Tony,
Your San Francisco photo brought a smile to my face and a tear to my eye.
Pat, Thank you, we were surprised by the size of the parade. Certainly living in Toronto we were used to ‘Gay Parades’ that were [then only] allowed on All Hollows Eve [Oct 31st].
We were in San Francisco waiting to board a freighter to take us across the Pacific – so it was purely by chance we encountered the Gay Parade.
It was the size, number, and types of participants that amazed – there were obvious gay’s, alongside mothers and children – It was more like the normal North American parade - with Shriners on their mini bikes etc - than a parade for a specific reason.
Recently we’ve seen ‘Alternative’ parades in New Orleans, but nothing to match the size of that San Francisco parade on the 25th June more than four decades ago

Colbrook Motel sign, Chester VA (https://flic.kr/p/vScNoQ) by JOHN EARLEY (https://www.flickr.com/photos/jacketch/), on Flickr
During the Jim Crow era, segregated facilities existed in Virginia. The Colbrook, a tourist court type motel, was owned by William Earl Brooks and his wife, Audrey Woods Brooks. Located on US Rt. 1, in Chester Virginia, the motel was open to black travelers who could not find accommodations elsewhere.
It can be seen faintly that the sign indicated that the motel was "International" which I've been told was a euphemism for non-whites.
The old buildings were recently torn down as of 5-10-20.

Sorry, I have to share with you on how incredibly ignorant and naive I've been. Why didn't someone inform me of this? It would have saved me from being so baffled and frustrated with the harassment I've had from some federal forest service employees. I caretake and live on a 360 acre ranch here in Idaho that is owned by a guy in L.A. Let me make it clear that I've always supported the forest service and had volunteered probably more than one thousand hours back in the 90s, I'm no Bundy. I helped design and groom a cross-country ski system in our valley. But as the forest service rotates employees around, I've found the newer ones sometimes very hostile to me.
Well, with recent events I just learned what the symbol for anarchy is. Which is the same as the sign that I made to hang here at the entrance into the Circle A Ranch. This photo will probably put me on a watch list, if I wasn't already on one!

Tuco,
My first impression was of a gate preventing entry to government-owned land, and probably a long-closed military facility. The moss on the vine maples on the right makes me think the location is out near the coast of the Olympic Peninsula. The land on the other side of the fence seems to have a story rooted in the past.

I can't say who owns the land but it is on route to the Snoqualmie Falls ( a picture I recently posted in the hiking thread). It is where you turn to take a trail down the hillside to the river. If you could continue past that gate, you would probably end up on the bluff at the top of the falls. My guess it's there to prevent that.

The green sign is small from here, so if you can’t quite read it, it simply says “3” – meaning three miles per hour.
How many pleasure boats depart or return at that speed?
Very few, say the harbor seals, who swim here and sun themselves on the jetty, somewhere on the Olympic Peninsula (Wash. state).

That small sign deserves a big crop!
Now two signs become apparent, which I hadn't noticed.
The lower (white) sign needs no explanation: “Boaters 3 MPH please”
I thought the higher (green) sign “3” indicated the same speed, but then I remembered Google is my friend:
“When proceeding toward open water (seaward), navigate so that the Green Aids are
to starboard. In this instance, you will see odd numbers on the Aids and the numbers
should decrease as you proceed toward open water (seaward).”
-----
As for the harbor seals mentioned above, I'm not sure what units of measure they go by, – MPH, knots, or their own system of units which we humans probably can’t … fathom. :D
