Hey,
I have these 4x5 holders, and films in it. These are not my films, and this person is not here with me and i have know idea what is in it. Is there a way to find out if the films are black and white or color? before i even try to develop them?

A bit off topic, but related:
Finding the code notch is just the first step; you have to be able to identify the film afterward. Is there a listing of all the different code notches and their corresponding films anywhere handy? Or do we have to check all the manufactures separately?

There is a good chapter in a book called Using the View Camera (by Steve Simmons, published by Amphoto - i bought it of amazon.co.uk so it is fairly easy to find i think) that lists all the notches in table form and reproduces them graphically as well as telling which film they are. I have found it very helpful, especially when buying second hand darkslides and finding them already loaded with film!
best wishes

There's a chart of the notch codes in Kodak's current films at:

Sadly, many manufacturers use the same notch for all their films.
