Hi,

I got this Gitzo head (see photo). It only says R3 on it (apart from Gitzo France). Does anyone know whats the default legs for this head?

That would be a 3 series tripod from Gitzo. By the looks of it, this seems a video head.

From what I've been able to glean, the R3 head is from the mid-80's. I don't think it would be for a modern Series 3. Looking at Gitzo spare parts, I'd guess it came from a "G" series.

A 3 series tripod, which will be labeled "Studex." Gray hammertone legs most probably.

I have a similar head but the smaller R. No. 2 and series 2 (Reporter) legs. Your head has longer handles on a couple of the controls, which might make it more video-friendly, but it's not a fluid head like they sell for video now. Also, there are two screws on the tlit mechanism, a main tilt handle and a tension adjust. Yours may have the handles swapped around - the longest handle, and the knob on the same piece of metal. I think you can just exchange them if you want.

I have a similar head. It's a three way not fluid.

What legs are you using for it?

The label says Gitzo 340 Brevete SGDG I believe it's the 1 1/2" diameter 4 Pro STudex Series about 35 years old.

Looks like this. https://www.keh.com/shop/tripods-gitzo-340-inter-pro-studex-performance-27-7-8-60-1-4-3-section-1.html

It's a great head, so think twice before replacing it, as some photographers will do when the 'newest' or 'greatest' comes along.

After all, just as the venison on the table that never cared how fancy or exotic the gun that caught it was, a solid tripod head, compared to another, does no care what's newest, as they can all have a limit to how strongly they hold the camera they carry and how well.

IMO.
