Ok...240 (linhof) made for press camera...can it be used on 5x7...8x10?

Linhof rebadges other lenses. The most likely candidates are either a 240/5.5 Schneider Tele-Arton lens, which won't even cover 4x5 all that well; or the 240/5.6 Schneider Symmar which will cover up to 8x10. Do a little searching for the Schneiders on eBay and compare what they look like to what you've got. Usually Linhof stuck them in rebadged Compur shutters.
Interesting, Mr. Petronio. Linhof lenses with which I am familiar have the manufacturer's complete markings. Can you point us to an example of this rebadging you claim Linhof has used to obscure the real idenity of the lens?

If it's a 240 Symmar, watch out for the shutter -- a Comur #2. There's no "press-focus" mechanism so you have to set it to "T" to focus, and the shutter speed dial is hard to use.

I don't think Mr. Petronio implied that Linhof did anything to obscure the real identity of any lens. 'Rebadging' is the term used when a reseller puts their name prominently on a product made by a third party. Mr. Petronio is reasonably assuming that Percy does not have the lens in hand and cannot see all the markings on it.

Good point! Thank you!

The lens on a Linhof 220 is a Rodenstock as was the "Linhof Portrait" lens from the late 70s and early 80s.
