What are your suggestions?

Is B&W a bad idea?

Its been done, and can look good. What do you want to acheive?

Standard 100-speed films, f/5.6 or so, and just hold the shutter open. Don't let it go for too long, or it'll just be a giant mess of light. Also watch out for smoke. If you have an auto-cocking shutter, you can make multiple exposures. Shoot lots of film as it won't be easy to judge success till you develop. Nothing wrong with b&w if you want.
