I have a very nice S-K 360mm Tele-Xenar in a working Compound shutter. What would it take to remount to a newer Copal shutter? I think it would need a #3 Copal.

Yes and it would take custom machining. Better contact SKG.

If the compound shutter is good and functional, why the need to remount in a different (copal) shutter?
In the case of th 360mm f5.5 Tele Xenar, it does go into a Copal# 3 shutter, have one, later versions are a direct fit into a Copal# 3 shutter.

Compound shutters have an round iris advantage over the Copal and when in good condition they are very reliable-durable.
Copal shutters have a higher shutter speed than the Copal, is this really needed?

Yes, Copal 3, but which version ? I've tried to get the rear retaining ring and FAIL on all accounts (several tries and finally machinist made one for me)....mine is also late Copal.
This is just heads up, so you understand the conundrum you might be getting into.

Thanks for all responses! I think I'll keep using my Compound shutter for now.

Some copies of the original version of the 360mm f/5.5 came with a threaded adapter from Compound #3 to Copal #3 before they changed the barrel design for the later 360mm f/5.5 that was a direct fit for the Copal shutter.

Similar adapters can be found for the Symmar 300mm f/5.6 and the Angulon 210mm f/6.8 both of which were designed for the Compound #3.
