View Full Version : Carbon Transfer by Focal Press
The second book I want to announce is a new book in carbon transfer scheduled for publication by Focal Press.

Focal Press has announced that Carbon Transfer, which I co-authored with Don Nelson and John Lockhart, is scheduled for October of this year and Amazon is now accepting pre-orders.
This is an entirely new book, in English. All of the material has been completely re-written compared to any of my previous publications, and most of the gallery illustrations are also new.
The book has quite a bit of history of alternative carbon printing methodologies that may be of practical interest to some, including information on polymerization with iron salts and tanning with diazo type compounds, including DAS. For those who may be interested in those alternative methods much of the account of our testing of materials has been covered in discussions on groups.io.

Sandy, pls remind us when available. Does Amazon charge now, or when it ships?

Hi Luis,
I will send a reminder. No idea about Amazon policy on payments for pre-orders. But I do believe the book will ship on schedule around October 5.

Jim,
And thank you for allowing us to include some of your work in the gallery of artists. We are pleased to include carbon prints produced from image capture with LF and ULF film.

did Calvin Grier participate in the book?
I'm not sure but I don't think Calvin did as he was busy at the time I believe.

Thanks Sandy and co authors. Pre ordered a copy. I have been meaning to go down this road for some time after seeing Sandy's and Jims work. Looking forward to the experience.

Looks exciting. Sandy is truly The King. John's wife June was such a wonderful actress, I just loved her in LASSIE - prettier even than the dog. And Don - too bad you never got that NBA championship as a Coach after getting five as a player with the Celtics. ;-)

Just bought it. I have some of Sandy's earlier books, and I have no doubt that this one will be terrific.
Perhaps it's in a second printing already as mine is promised by Arriving Oct 28 - Dec 9, Order Placed: August 30, 2019
Thursday, October 31, 2019 - Friday, December 13, 2019
These are the latest arrival dates for my copy...email dated 10/2/19. It would have been great to have it before my carbon workshops this fall. Looking forward to it!

Hard to say when the book will arrive, but it has already been printed in at least one location. BTW, these days some books are printed in multiple locations, some could be in the US, others in the EU, and perhaps in other countries.
One of the features of this book, in comparison to the other books on alternative printing in this series from Focal Press, is that we treat the subject of both analog and digital negatives. There is even a chapter on three-color carbon in the book. As I explain in the preface of the book, I originally got interested in carbon printing in order to print color, but since then have done most of my work in monochrome.

The book has quite a bit auto clicker (https://autoclicker.pro/) word unscrambler (https://wordunscrambler.onl/) jumble solver (https://jumblesolver.pro/) of history of alternative carbon printing methodologies that may be of practical interest to some, including information on polymerization with iron salts and tanning with diazo type compounds, including DAS. For those who may be interested in those alternative methods much of the account of our testing of materials has been covered in discussions on groups.io.

How does this book differ from the carbon printing book you and John self published recently?

Karl
When you open the Amazon link for the book click on LOOK INSIDE and you will see a Table of Contents, and a preview of what is inside. The Focal book is a completely new book, not a re-write of The Carbon Print. Several important differences include the following.
*Much more history and documented research on carbon printing.
*Sections on multi-layer carbon, including color, much more extensive.
*Chapter on non-dichromate based carbon, historical context and practical applications.
*Gallery of contemporary carbon artists much more extensive.
Would write more but am recovering from a shoulder injury that limits typing to pecking with my right hand!
Best,
Sandy

Excellent. Thanks for that info. I'll add it to my shopping list. Was just gifted a 4 gallon inline water heater for my darkroom, so I'll be set for "development" without resorting to a kettle. Get well soon.
