Thanks for the heads-up Merg. I've been reading about Russell and his contemporaries and , believe it or not, two used books on F. Jay Hayes that I ordered off Amazon were in my mailbox today: Northern Pacific Views, The Railroad Photography of F. Jay Haynes 1874-1905, and F. Jay Haynes, Photographer so this exhibit is a must for me!. I wish more exhibitions of historical photographers would make its was to the bay area - everything seems to go east.

Hi Thomas, I enjoyed my visit there today. The exhibit is nicely presented, informative of both photography and history. Although the majority of the photographs are digital pigment prints from scans (taken from the very large Oakland Museum Collection of Russell's glass plates) there is a representation of Albumen and Salt prints. The short video on the Albumen process is good, filmed on the museum terrace with darkroom tent and resulting print. I hope you get a chance to see the exhibition and report back.

Look at the lensboard in the self portrait of Alexander Gardner ca 1856: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/5/50/Alexander_Gardner.jpg Notice that there is a screw hole visible at the 11 O'clock position and another at 9 O'clock. Did they use the same lensboard back in those days for multiple lens covering-up the holes when changing lens? Gardner was another civil war and railroad photographer contemporaneous with Russell.

Just a heads-up: The first Sunday of every month is free admission - that will save you $11 - and parking meters are not enforced on Sundays so that will save you a couple of dollars more. This Sunday is the first Sunday in June. If you ignore the now obligatory salvo of racial politics at the beginning, this is a good exhibit and an excellent introduction to the photographers of the civil war and America when the railroad first crossed the continent.
