View Full Version : Sinar Norma Shutter: backwards compatibility with P/F/X camera systems?

I was lucky enough recently to buy a 5x7 Norma from a gentleman here on LFF, and am in the process of keeping what I think I'll use here in the Appalachian backcountry and looking to "part out" the pieces of the system I don't think fit my particular photographic aspirations. Toward that end, I just the had the Sinar Norma shutter included in the deal CLA'd by Bob Watkins at Precision in preparation for listing it here at LFF.

Before I list the shutter for sale, though, another forum member advised me to make sure that the Norma shutter is compatible with those later Sinar systems that came after the "Norma era." If it's not clear already, :), I'm a complete novice when it comes to Sinar systems, so any thoughts/caveats/complications you might have so I can be clear in my "ad copy" will be greatly appreciated.

My Norma shutter won't fit into my Sinar P. All of my Sinar gear was bought used so although it looks like it is "the right stuff" I can't say with certainty.

Thanks for the reply, Jeff--that's an interesting data point since I've gotten conflicting advice from experienced Sinar users that the Norma shutter should be "good to go." Maybe someone will be along that can get both of us sorted...:)

I have a Sinar shutter that fits on any Horseman rail camera.

Perhaps Bob Watkins at Precision Camera Works will be able to provide an authoritative answer to your question.

I know the question was only about Sinar systems.

However I converted a Linhof Color Kardan and a large copy camera to Horseman frames which are easier to convert than Sinar frames. And no conversion was necessary for 4X5 and 8X10 rail Horseman.

Just adding to your database of potential usages.

I have a Norma Shutter with both cables, so not in the market.

I have three Norma shutters in my studio. I use them on Normas. If I were you I would leave it to the buyer to sort this out.

Talking to your repair guy is a good idea.

Ha, that might be good advice Daniel.:) FWIW, I just shot a quick note to Precision--Bob's out of town, but he relayed a message that some people do have trouble fitting the shutter to the camera (I'm assuming non-Norma) frame, but that there are ways to make it work.

While we're waiting, though: is it SIGH-nar or SEE-nar?;)

Sinar Norma shutter works fine on a Sinar X

In the USA most people say Sigh'-nar, but that's not good German, of course. That would be Zee-nar', but I'm not a native German speaker, and so I'd be happy to be corrected. If you say that in the USA, to a dealer, for example, they will likely think you mean Xenar. It can get confusing. :) I'm just happy if Americans pronounce the last syllable of Porsche.

Greg--thanks for the data point!:)

Peter-- Ha, I actually have the opposite problem having known a lot of Francophone Louisianans...e.g. it takes an effort of will not to call a colleague "A-bear" instead of "HEE-bert," even after years of knowing the guy.

Porsche is easy, find how many Americans pronounce Volkswagen correctly, including their dealers! But then Porsche is part of VW. Audi is another.

OK Bob... first car was a 1956 Volkswagen. Since then have also owned and driven a 1965, 1967, 1968, 1973, 1974, (plus a couple of breadboxes) and currently enjoy driving a 1979 Volkswagen Convertible Beetle with the top down around town here in New England. So just what is the correct phonetical pronunciation of "Volkswagen"?
thanks

Have had a few more then you. First was the twin rear window with the pop out flag turn signals. Also had a later one and a Kardan Ghia convertible, the 911 station wagon, several Passats, the CC and currently the 2019 Jetta.

In German a v is pronounced as an f and a w as a v. Folksvagen.

Oh yeah, since 1956 my cousins have owned a VW agency, unfortunately not near me.

When my grandfather closed his Desoto Plymouth agency my uncles decided not to open the VW agency in Bridgeport, CT, big mistake!

You are right but when I was with EPOI selling Sinar they pronounced it as Sigh nar.

c.1970 Audi ran a magazine ad addressing pronunciation. The headline was "Just say Howdy!" That was in the days of the (terribly unreliable) 100LS model.
-And Mr. Salomon, re your post #16, I'd like to see a picture of your "Kardan Ghia". A sporty monorail styled by the Italians?

I wish, but it was just a plain vanilla Karman Ghia convertible, but my spell checker changed it for me. Thanks for pointing it out!

Sinar Noma shutter on Sinar P2 with Goerz 16-1/2" Red Dot Artar.
190494

Sinar Norma with later version black Copal Sinar shutter with aperture scale on the side for DB or DBM mounted lenses.
190495

Sinar Norma shutter Fits and works good on Sinar P2, Later version Sinar black Copal shutter works fine on the Sinar Norma. They are interchangeable between Norma to P2. Difference being, the Norma shutter does NOT work with Sinar DB or DBM mounted lenses. There is no aperture scale or aperture operating arm within the shutter and the distance from the front of the shutter to the shutter blades is shorter than the later Copal Sinar shutter version with the aperture scale on the side that is designed for DB or DBM mounted lenses. The 16-1/2" Goerz RDA was put on the Sinar as an example of what that lens would like on on camera.
