I got mine at Vandykes Restoration. They're known as trunk handles. This is an image of a 9-inch one, but you can find them in different sizes:

Vandykes also has a stitched model that looks a tad bit classier.

I did what Mr. Early showed, but on a Deardorff V8. I modified the original invisibly by using tiny toothed T-nuts under the wooden platform. It made a secure attachment which did not disturb the bellows, nor require its removal.
