View Full Version : 7th Annual Large and Ultra Large Format Meet and Greet

Jim Fitzgerald
11-Mar-2019, 13:16
I've been asked to start a new thread with details about this event, so here you go. Tri Tran, Hugo Zhang and myself Jim Fitzgerald started this years ago with some success. This year it will be different than past years as it is more geared toward photographing. Models will be provided and I believe Tri will bring a dark tent for collodion work. Bring your gear to photograph.

We are not doing formal tables to show artwork and sell gear. As I said it is about photographing models, or in and around the park. If you want to sell something it is up to you but no tables are provided. Maybe the park has some picnic tables I'm not sure. I'll find out. This get together is more about hanging out and talking about our love of LF and ULF photography and catching up with one another. I will be coming down from Vancouver Washington for the event.

The meet and greet will be held at:

Thomas Riley Park. 30952 Oso Parkway Coto De Caza CA. 92679

Date: April 7, 2019 Sunday

Time: 9AM-6PM

What to bring: Bring your cameras, film, plates etc. Bring some food! We are not providing food for everyone. Please bring what you wish to drink (no Alcohol allowed) and what you wish to eat. It would be nice if everyone brought something to share. Nothing elaborate, snacks etc. It is all about sharing our passion for the medium and having a good time.

I will attach a link with the map of the location. Questions can be directed to me or Tri and one of us will get back to you. Either on this post or via pm whichever works. There should not be many questions but who knows?

Hope to see everyone soon!!

JIm,
It is great to see that you are once again involved. I regret that as much as I have been wanting the group to resume, I will not be able to attend. Now that I am 90 my family does not like me to drive as far as Orange County, and Ken, with whom I have traveled for many years will be 3 treatments from the end of 45 days of radiation treatment for his cancer, and expects to be unable to drive any distance. SHould any of these change, you can bet we will be there. Good luck with the renewed event.

This is the Park address. It is located at the end of Oso Parkway, then left next to two entrances to the Coto de Caza community. I spoke with the ranger today and there is no problem. The picnic area if first come first served. So, whomever arrives at the park first, needs to make sure put a sign that says RESERVED for LFF. I will bring one in case I am the first one. I have to check with Mr. Tran and Mr. Hugo about the meeting time. There are portable toilets and some water fountains. However, it is better to bring your own water and snacks. There is nothing close by.
I will post pictures later. Here is the link to the Park (http://www.ocparks.com/parks/thomas/)'s website.

I can be there at 8 am with a sign to reserve the spot. It is Sunday, so a very popular day for families. Hopefully they will go after church. I will skip church.

Thank you Jim F for the event details.
Thank you Pepeguitarra for all the info of the Park.
My best wishes to Jim and Ken for a good health.
I'm sure this event will be enjoyable and memorable .

Here's my 7x17 in shot. Thanks to Jim Noel for the opportunity for me to own this camera.

My 810 camera won't arrive this early as it will be an all black 810 Alpinist with a convertible back, but I will bring my 11x14 and 16x20 cameras as they are ULF cameras. If we are in the mood and the lighting is good, we might expose a few of negatives. I like the idea of 1:1 headshot.

Of course we can talk about Van Gogh as I read all his letters (over 900?) a few years ago.

Ken and I are in San Diego. As much as I would like to see Jim, Tri and Hugo, I wouldn't go without him.
Nice Photo Tri. You did my old camera proud.

I'd like to attend. But, it's just too far for me to drive from Portland. I kind of wonder, why not have some of these events in a location that's more centrally located?

I also notice that, if I'm not mistaken, there's no camping at the park?

Maybe another year.

pepeguitarra
12-Mar-2019, 07:23
Maybe next year will do it at O"Neill Regional Park in Trabuco Canyon. Still in Orange County, but the park has camping for motorhomes and tents. But reservations must be done ahead of time. We will discuss this at the April 7 meet up.

will try to make it.. kind of a longish haul for me (Santa Barbara)..if I do..I will have a couple cameras to offer and a few lenses anyway..so everyone bring lots of money!!!!

models you say???

might then bring a camera to shoot with I guess

Hugo Zhang
12-Mar-2019, 08:49
Yeah, bring anything you like, another model is better. Cameras, lenses and prints. It's a social event to meet old and make new LF friends. :)

Tri Tran
12-Mar-2019, 12:14
Please spread the words about this event .We love to see new LF faces.

Jim Fitzgerald
12-Mar-2019, 13:57
Please remember that we are here to photograph and meet new people and old friends. If your sole purpose is to sell gear this is not the place. If you have one or two items that is fine, just remember you may be taking it back with you. Bring some prints if you wish to share but remember there are no easels. This is a very causal event.

Tri Tran
12-Mar-2019, 14:55
Jim is absolutely right. We just dont want to turn this event to a LF Swap meet.
The purpose of this is to share our passion .
I will bring the wet plate gear to shoot, along with 7x17 . Perhaps 20x24 .

Jim Fitzgerald
23-Mar-2019, 13:12
Well if no one replies to this post then let's cancel this and do just that. I would not get any models Tri. That is just my .02 worth. I doubt if we will have more than ten people show up so my suggestion is that if there is no response by the end of the month we cancel this and go shoot on our own. Whenever you try to put something like this together it is amazing how now one responds to the posts and then when it is canceled everyone complains! So answer the question please!

Michael Clark

Jim Fitzgerald
24-Mar-2019, 08:49
Jim, I miss you and Ken and wish you both the best. You are right. If there are only half a dozen or so of us then why do it. Just go shoot on our own. Pepe there may be some LF photographers in Orange County who are not on this forum but we know most of them in the area. The LA photographers and the ones from surrounding counties used to come. I came from Ventura County when I lived down there. Now I'm in Vancouver Washington and as much as I'd like to see everyone it is disappointing that more are not interested.... oh well.

I think I will bring my 11x14 camera with its 810 back. I have 5 holders so that's 10 portraits. I am also going to bring my 5x7 as a backup so everyone will have a picture.

I need a vote for lenses:

I have 360mm, 420mm and 480mm Heliars and also a 19" Petzval (Voigtlander f/4.5, really swirly wide open and a 16" Dallmeyer 3A, much sharper lens than Voigtlander). Some other RR lenses are Goerz 480mm and 600mm f/6 lenses. I can also bring my 460mm Aero-Xenotar if you want to every facial hair you have there.

Let me know what lens you like for your portrait and if one negative if not enough ( you might blink and I might click my Packard shutter when you close your eyes), bring your own loaded 8x10 holder and take the exposed negative home. Develop and print them yourself.

I you don,t see the entrance (dirt kind of road with no sign), you will end up at the Coto de Caza gates (200 yards ahead). You can ask the guard and he will point out to you how to get there.

This was a wonderful event and very successful. Great company, models and several new friends. Looks like we will do this again next year. Next time I’ll drive down from Vancouver and bring my cameras. So nice for me to see my old and dear friends again. I’m sure Tri will post some images soon.

Hugo, thanks for bringing out the lenses. It was fun peeking at the the ground glass to see the quality of the swirly and butterly smooth bokeh of these lenses. Kinda like wine tasting without having to buy the wine bottle. We were so busy checking out the lenses and images on the ground glasses that we forgot the beautiful models were there. There was a Bi-quality, Heliar, TH Cook Portrait, Voigtlander Petzval, Kodak Portrait 305 and 405, Hermagis Eidoscope, and a few others. Thanks to Tri Tran for providing the models and food. Thanks to Jim Fitzgerald the carbon prints book. I am looking forward to the next meeting.

This was a wonderful renewal of friendships. It is always so heartwarming to get together with photography friends and just hang out. So many of my friends are no longer with us, and time moves on there are fewer and fewer occasions like this, especially groups whose members are deeply immersed in film photography, and particularly ULF. I (we) ae indebted to Tri, Hugo and JimF. for bringing us together several years ago,and doing so once again. His trip from Vancouver WA clearly illustrates JIm's dedication to the group. It is he who first suggested yesterday that we meet again in 2020. With Ken's willingness to drive me there, and fate allowing me to continue to be on this earth,I plan to be there.

I want to say a special thanks to Jim and Ken. Two of the finest friends I could ever have. The wealth of knowledge that these two have is amazing. I did not bring any cameras at all because I flew in but it was such a great time. One can learn so much from talking to and watching these dedicated artists work. I hope that I can be like Jim Noel when I am ninety years old and carry my 5x12 camera and tripod over my shoulder! We will get this together next year as well. So many to thank. Great weather, great friends. Join us all next year!

I did enjoy the meet and great, which I was waiting with grand expectation. I had the opportunity to put the faces to the names or nicknames and was very impressed by the humbleness and character of everyone. I felt like I have known everybody for ever. Great camaraderie, I am very proud to be part of this group. I had the opportunity to meet and discuss with Jim Fitzgerald, a photographer and a colleague woodworker, and a person that has no problem explaining what he does, and how he does it. Carbon printing is on my list to do next. Shooting besides Jim Noel was a privilege, by looking and following him, I was able to learn a very important lesson: You need not to walk a mile on a trail to try to find things to shoot. He walked several yards and found things, compositions, and anything else to shoot. Thank you Jim, Jim, Tri, Hugo, Jose, Suti, Frank, and so many others whose names I can't remember now.

Here are some of the shots I took:

Hugo, the 4th photo you posted shows a whirlwind around the model, can you tell us about that lens? Once, I had a Trioplan lens and sent it for cleaning, when it came back, I got the same effect. I was so happy about it. Finally, I sent it again few years later for cleaning to another person. The new person told me that one of the elements was place inverted, he fixed, and I lost the whirlwind effect. ;(

Jose, I used a 19" f/4 Voigtlander Petzval lens made in 1870-1871 for that image. This early lens has crazy swirls unlike other Petzval lenses I have. I checked the lens elements and they are in right order. The least sharp lens I own and I have to use its very center to put my subject. The sharpest lens is the 3rd photo, a 460mm Aero-Xenotar f/4.5 lens.

Well, I guess the best for last. Here is another shot I took with my Century 8x10 on X-Ray film. The subject is actually looking at Hugo, who is taking his portrait. I was just on the side trying to shoot too. The model is Jim Noel. He is a great model, this was a one-second exposure and he did not move.

Excellent! I love the bokeh. Is that the meniscus lens? or which one is it?

Dan Dozer
29-Apr-2019, 08:33
Yes, this is half of a 1940's era Petzval projection lens used as a meniscus. I love this little meniscus lens for portrait type of work as it gives a lot of coverage and works great for 8 x 10 work.
