I have a half-plate plate holder which has a film sheet insert inside. Its designed to fit in place of a half-plate sheet of glass but take a 4x5 film sheet - in effect an insert fitted into a larger insert. This seems like a good idea but an uncommon solution. Are there any drawbacks to using such an insert? If not does anyone still supply these?

I have those.

Most likely a transition period 100 years ago.

Work fine for me.

IMHO nobody makes steel film inserts anymore. There is no market demand.

I'm with Randy. They are easy to load, and hold the film flat. Problem is -I know of no current manufacturer.

Thanks both. I'll look for some more and hopefully might find some.

I was going to manufacture them: https://www.largeformatphotography.info/forum/showthread.php?145203-Film-Sheaths-and-Adapters-for-Plate-Holders

But I was discouraged.

I have a NOS box of Kodak 2-1/4 x 3-1/4 Film Sheaths on my computer desk. I didn't even need to reach. Price on box $1.98

I collect film and plate folders in all sizes, I couldn't resist these useless cuties. :)

You could probably make them from black foam core, cutting out the center.
