What is this? Does it require a separate trigger or power source, and if so, what kind? Origin, purpose of it?

Thank you for your expertise
(Sorry for the misspelled title)
Looks like it's just in a Compur electronic shutter.

the #1 in the largely unsuccessful battery timed “electronic” version. Most of the electronic versions don’t work.
That's what I needed to know. Thank you very much.

For what it's worth, I have two Compur Electronic #3 shutter that work very well, but they're also over 40 years old now, so who knows how much life is left in them.

Is there a simple DIY to use the shutter manually? Thanks

I can't speak to the other sizes like the #1 for this Planar, but my #3's will fire at a single speed if there's no battery. And T mode always works, too. When I change the shutter to T, the shutter release mechanically links to the open shutter for focusing lever and off the electronic mechanism--so pressing the shutter release once opens it and pressing it again closes it. But that's it though. And I don't know what the default firing speed is (1/60th, maybe?)
