View Full Version : When did Schneider stop producing Angulons?

This is mostly a curiosity thing. It certainly doesn't affect actual photos.

But does anyone know or have a guess?

From the auction site, it seems the highest serial numbers I could find were for the 90mm Angulon in the 11,400,000's. Well, I found one that high, at least. There were a few more in the 11,300,000's.

11,000,000 = 11/1968
11,500,000 = 07/1970

Most other focal lengths stop in the 9,000,000's. The highest I could find for any other focal length was a 165mm Angulon with the serial #9,906,521, mounted natively in a Compur Electronic #3

9,500,000 = 09/1965
10,000,000 = 01/1967

I'm guessing these are pretty close to the end of the line? That Angulon production end before 1970?

I have a January 1968 Burleigh Brooks/Schneider lens price list that includes the Angulon (focal lengths 65, 90, 120, 165 and 210mm). Then I have a fold out pamphlet titled "Schneider Lenses for all formats". It does not have a clear date but on the bottom of the last panel is this: "216 VIII 68 T 200" This pamphlet does not show the Angulon line. If the "68" on the last panel means this pamphlet is from 1968, that would suggest to me that the Angulon was discontinued later in 1968 (and this pamphlet is from later in 1968).

1969 appears to be the last year that all of the focal lengths were in production. There were four batches of the 65/6.8 in 1970 and a single batch of the 90/6.8. The last Angulon was a 65/6.8 #11,662,321 on 8 December 1970. That doesn't rule out one offs produced years later as will occasionally show up, but that was where full production ended.

More likely that that was when inventories ran out.

Thank you very much for this information Paul. By any chance is this from Hartmut Thiele's _Großes Fabrikationsbuch Schneider-Kreuznach Band II_? Every now and then I make a futile effort to try to get more of his works. So far his two volumes on Carl Zeiss Jena are all I've managed to obtain.

I can confirm the 9, 9XX,XXX range for my 165 Angulon in a Compur 3 electronic...

Yes it is, I have all three of the Schneider books. I got my copies through Leicashop.com in Germany. I really wish they were available as a database or a spreadsheet because this sort of question involves a lot of flicking through pages. On the other hand you do pick up all sorts of interesting nuggets of information that way. This time I found a listing for a batch of 175 8 1/4" Dagors built for Goerz USA in January 1973 along with 325 Kenro K1 lenses with no focal length or aperture listed.

Learned a new thing was persuing Photrio earlier.

Apparently there was a short run of Angulons in 1978 of 104 lenses for a single customer.

I actually have one of the last Angulons ever made. It's a 165mm Angulon from 1978. It was part of a special production run (I believe 104 total units) that was made for a specific customer (not sure who). It is definitely a different mechanical design than all previous 165mm Angulons. It's a direct fit on a No. 3 shutter (a necessity as there was no longer any such thing as a No. 2 shutter in production) and it takes 67mm filers instead of the 58mm filters of the previous version. One of these days, I'll get around to testing it side-by-side with a Linhof select 165mm Angulon from 1966 to see if it offers any more coverage or better performance.
