I'm renovating my home basement darkroom. Up until now, I used this space for general storage, film loading, and long ago, color enlarging. I still have a 16" Kreonite CPT16 dry to dry EP2 Color processor hooked up, but I'm getting rid of that. Want to set this up for B&W darkroom work. Washing and water in another room right now.
Been buying shelving, floor mats, and a LOT of cleaning and organizing. Mind the clutter, it's not done yet. Just wanted to show you guys my progress. What do you think so far?

Daniel, the larger of the two enlargers looks to be an Omega with the "saucer-shaped" lamphouse, which was designed with a circular fluorescent lamp for graded papers. I have the E6 (5x7) version which I converted to LEDs for use with VC papers. FYI, if you're ever interested in such a conversion, I posted this lengthy thread some time ago:
https://www.largeformatphotography.info/forum/showthread.php?111226-Omega-5x7-E6-LED-Mod
Also, when I built my darkroom I hung a couple of fluorescent fixtures for room lighting; then I noticed they left a very dim afterglow from the phosphors for several minutes after being turned off; so I switched to incandescents. I found out later this is a common problem with fluorescents.

I have a lot of EKTALURE salon paper I loaded up on, right before it was discontinued, up to 16x20. The Omegalite liked Ektalure. I developed it in Unicolor print drums. And a lot of Foma graded paper. I like to mix my developers from scratch sometimes. Glycin and Amidol I recall fondly.
I've ordered tray sets to 16x20 and they should be here from Freestyle in a few days. Work on this continues as I have time.

Appreciate your comments, Jerry. Now I have even more ideas to ponder! Yes the LED mod is intensely interesting to me. Thanks :)

no sink?
My dark room get very dark at night n also serves as my workshop.
at least you have sheet rock n open studs to work around. My walls n ceiling are plaster n lath which makes running wire n pipes a PITA. Lucky me I have a sink in an alcove kitchen as it was once used as a basement apartment. Id like to run pipes to update it but my old brass is buried in walls I really dont want to start disturbing.
oh the other problem?... where to I put all my crap while renovating? I have so much stuff n machines n no where to put it.
feeling a bit more lucky now?

Jerry, the afterglow problem is why I used LED's in my darkroom. I've had fluorescent lights that had an afterglow that lasted 45 seconds! The LED's have an afterglow, but it's never been over 5 seconds.

I'm changing to LED four footers overhead. My local Menards has them $27 for 2000 lumens. Planning to put up two of them. Also have to reposition the overhead tungsten fixture, and multiple Patterson safelights and Kodak Green inspection filter.

I want to build a long sink, and behind the Omega enlarger is a Kreonite square large green "plate washing sink" (think print shop type stuff). Want to build a base for that with legs and use it for film processing. Also I want to set up my 8x10 Kodak rubber tanks for a B&W basket processing line. I have all that stuff already. Not sure yet where to put all this stuff!!!
Right now water and film processing is going on in the laundry room. Stationary tub there.
Yes I feel lucky :)

Daniel, make sure you have more electrical outlets on the dry side of the room than you think you'll ever need; this rabbit hole of photography has a way of increasing the "needs". Consider also the ventilation/filtering needed for your room air volume. Also room temp and/or humidity, depending on where you're located. Lack of FRESH air can be debilitating and produce some weird results. Temp control of water supply can be difficult; areas like the US southwest is known for high temp water supply in the summer and can be challenging to get it cooled down for use. I'm in the northwest (no HVAC) and fortunately don't experience this challenge year round. My darkroom is always ready to go in and start working, using a small portable thermostatically-controlled space heater to maintain 68F (24/7, unless I'm gone for a lengthy time). It also keeps everything in the room stabilized at that temp. As a backup, I installed a higher output wall heater with ON/OFF wall switch (only operated when I'm in the room) - it originally had thermostatic control but jammed in the ON position ONCE and heated the room to 108F before I discovered it (that control was quickly trashed).
SINK: I put in two SS sinks (7-ft and 4-ft) end-to-end, then built a plywood rack under the 7-footer with slots to hold ALL my trays up to 20x24. A great space saver. Each sink has a shelf; the 4-footer's shelf holds film/print washers, large & small + chem storage containers. Above the 4-ft is a water flowmeter to control flow to print washers.

Didn't see any kreonite. It's possible to use a salad bar, the kind you see at various restaurants. Just saw one at reasonable cost and it's all (where matters) stainless steel. I think 16x20 would be the largest size possible with this type of set up.....oh it was almost 6' long.

The Kreonite works, it's just outside on the other side of the darkroom front wall, next to the door. I used to feed prints in where the black plastic shelving is now, with all the tanks. I've just covered that up, see the black plastic stapled to the wall? I'm in Ohio, but I'm not ready to sell it yet.

I have a couple of these radiant heaters that plug in. It is cold in there. Maybe I should have a heating duct run into there: It's VERY cold right now.
There's the Kreonite Drain Pipe I just took out. We also made that grey table to hold the Kreonite. I could maybe repurpose that; My Wife wants to use it as a laundry table

I love the Kreonite plate sink. I have an 8 foot Kreonite sink, same color. It is a graphic arts sink so has a separate drain trough in back. Hang on to the processor if you have room might come in handy.

Even though fluorescents have an afterglow, I've never found it to be a problem, when developing C41, B&W or RA4. They seem to fade to a level that is a non-issue almost immediately, based on my experience.
May switch to LEDs for less flicker and finickiness though.
Darkroom looks good so far!

Here I have installed two LED 4' overhead strip lights, and relocated the large round kitchen fixture overhead. I also changed the tungsten bulbs to LEDs.
I think the lighting is brighter, more pleasant, will be cheaper to power, and runs cooler. Next I will rerun the safelights, and clean and move the copy stand(and junk) in the far corner out and around. I want to run some dry plates in here this weekend. Need one more Patterson safelight, already have three.
Also, I bought more of the white shelving at Lowes, I'm not happy about losing half of my formica work table, with the shelving sitting on top of it. So for now, I am running the white shelving floor to ceiling, and pulling the formica table out to accomodate the work table. Additional shelving will go underneath the table, to store trays and other stuff. Tray sets (four of each) arrived from Freestyle yesterday, in 5x7, 8x10, and 11x14. I'll order 16x20 but that's more for future. 16x20s I had been processing in a Unicolor Print Drum.
Also, I am cleaning the Bencher copy stand and moving it around, and clearing out the storage junk in the far corner. That will give me some additional work space. In the future the copy stand may go out into the studio area. A friend sent me an article from Darkroom Photography about building darkroom sinks from sheet PVC. I think I like that idea and may roll with that.

consider a Thomas duplex safelight if you can- it's by far the best out there. One will easily light your whole space.
Kreonite: honestly, I'd dump it - if you want to get back to RA4 processing, there are better/smaller/more appropriate choices. (Can that even be set up for RA4?) I use a Fujimoto CP-31 (I actually have a whole spare CP-31 too...), it's a great solution for RA4.

Hi Ed!
No color, just B&W. I've had Patersons safelights forever, actually I just found a couple more cheap. But thanks for the suggestion!
I don't think the EP2 Kreonite will be hard to sell, when I am ready. Kreonites last longer than we will and of course Kreonite is still around. A friend calls it the "kryponite" processor because they last forever.

Thanks Guys for all the ideas! Keep them coming!
I did replace all the overheads yesterday with LEDS. Total Cost about 60 Bucks. Will save more than that on energy over the upcoming years. Replaced the tungsten round bulbs with LEDS, too. Those are cheap at IKEA. Notice the well deserved beer in the foreground. LOL. :)

I did just pull the trigger on this Modern Enlarging Systems Model II LED head for my Omega DII. It uses Cree XP-G LEDs which are the most efficient on the market. Printing speed about like a 150W bulb so very bright blue LED. Although the Model II was intended for graded paper printing, I can put 6x6" Multigrade Gels in it's path if I want to VC print with it (which I eventually will when I run out of graded paper). The price on this was really great so I grabbed it. A wonderful upgrade to my trusty ole DII.
Next week I'll go after a big fiberglass darkroom sink practically right next door, and I have my eye on a 16x20 Calumet Archival Print Washer for a good price at a local used photo shop
Most pressing projects are the drop ceiling, and installing a heat vent in the ductwork running through the darkroom. I'm waiting for the special order duct to come in.
Anybody here using the Model II? This one is new in the box, never used :)

This is the Calumet Archival Print Washer I just bought for $250. Weighs a ton when empty, takes seventeen gallons to fill. Mine needs a bit of work but appears OK, 30 day return at the store where I purchased it. I will replace all the clear tubing, and the top right overflow "T" appears bent, maybe it dosen't leak?? We will see soon. This unit will archivally wash twelve 16x20 fiber prints, or 24 8x10s in one go. This was a $650 print wash in it's last years in the Calumet catalog. I think it was made by Gravity Works? A Thing of Beauty in my opinion............
The compartments are sealed so you be almost done washing a set of prints, and then drop in another print freshly loaded with fixer, it won't contaminate the other washing prints. Very cool

Current initial priorities: 1) Install heat vent duct in heating pipe running through darkroom. A special order item at Menards and coming my way soon. 2) Install drop ceiling to cut down on dust coming from above

I found an article about modifying the DII so that the neg stage becomes adjustable. I bought a box of thumb screws from McMaster Carr, and washers and bolts too. Now my neg stage is adjustable.

I also modified my DII lensboards, so that the lens planes of each are adjustable. I drilled and tapped each board, and put a layer of computer mouse pad between each top and bottom of each finished board. Used thumbscrews from McMaster Carr. So now I will use the Versalab Parallel Laser Alignment Tool to set the enlarger completely parallel each time I set enlarger height. Only makes a minute to do this each time.

Here are all the finished adjustable lens boards. I like the original silver Schneider Componons, I find them entirely adequate for my uses. I do have one much more modern black 180mm Rodenstock, which I have always used for printing 16x20s from 4x5

Just drove all the way across town, and bought this Delta 6 foot Darkroom Sink for Fifty Bucks :) It sells new at B&H for almost $800, when you figure in the freight. I think it will hold three 16x20 Patterson trays so I think I am good to go. This will work well with the Kreonite 4x4' Sink to it's left, and the Calumet 16x20 print washer in between the two sinks.
Not too shabby! :) Needs to be pressure washed thoroughly, though Yuck! No cracks I can see, soon will be as good as new.

I know what you mean, about 30 years ago I bought a 6' SS Leedal sink at Helix for $250. The shipping cost way more than the sink! Good find. Don't forget to support the sink every 8" to 12" or so, esp if you're going to put that print washer in it. I had a plastic one on a wooden stand with supports underneath every 6"-8" or so. The Leedal metal stand that came with the SS sink came with supports at 24" OC, I put a support in between each one, so now they're every 12" oc.

Thanks Luis! Yes I'm very concerned about enough bracing under this thing. I've heard the plastic can bulge under the weight. Can't let that happen....
The print washer will go on a separate square table I think. I'm even thinking about building a box with a drain in it in case it leaks !

This is the Delta Faucet/Drain set that will restore my new sink. B&H sells it for $119 which is OK with me at this point.
There was one on my new unit but it was completely rotten. Might as well replace all with new.
When you total everything up at the Lowes or Home Depot it's prolly cheaper to buy this from B&H! And it's made for this sink.

I had a SS tray custom made to fit under my Zone VI washer just in case................It's outside the sink on a cabinet next to the sink and drains to the sink.

Work is proceeding at a good clip. We are about half done installing the new drop ceiling. I'm getting very confident with the vintage Mitre Saw on the new Harbor Freight saw stand. Making lots of sawdust and vacuuming it up right away.

Here's the Petersons Photographic article from the 70s, that I've been thinking about. I have fresh blotter sheets from Freestyle (25 of them 20x24), and I've ordered corrugated cardboard sheets same size (a carton of them), which will dry a pile of 16x20s in a couple of days time. By building this matte print dryer, it would speed up the drying process to just a few hours.

Here you can see the drop ceiling starting to go in. You can see the 2x4's we ran around the perimeter above the concrete block walls. We need to rearrange some ductwork; will finish that hurdle on Monday. The gas pipe will run below the drop ceiling; don't want to mess with it, and if we ever decide to sell the house (which I seriously doubt!!), want to have it still hooked up (used to have a gas fireplace and it could be easily hooked back up). In the near right corner ducting will hang down, then go up into the drop ceiling. Easiest way to deal with it. Also this plan preserves the extra tall ceiling height.
I am pleased so far! When we finish the ceiling the real photo fun will begin.

Today's progress, the drop ceiling is about half done! The difficult part of the work is over. Rerouting ducts, cutting around disconnected gas pipes, and various interesting construction roadblocks. The other half will be easy-peasy, and go quickly! Then on to installing the sinks, new electricals, and plumbing. Much more fun and interesting than this part of it. But WOW I'm glad I went for the drop ceiling. Really finishes the space!
I hope to have EVERYTHING completed by middle of spring.

I love it, "How to Build your own Drymount Press". People used to give me all kinds of old do-it-yourself magazines going back even to the 20's. "How to drill your own water well using your drill' - where you could order a bunch of 12 ft long bits for your 1940's 1/4" electric drill. Secret formulas for turning pine wood into oak. I always expected to see a Popular Mechanics article come out which told you how to build a nuke submarine using old washing machine parts. Drug smuggler subs come pretty close, except they're diesel. What I did see was a series of articles in a woodworking magazine describing how to build your own wood lathe. I presume the second installment showed the first project to do with it: use your lathe to make a prosthetic arm to replace your real arm torn off by gettting it caught in your home-made lathe. But is that really a drymount press or a giant electric bug-popper/ combination human-popper? Looks like something the Inquisition could have used.

I have a compilation book of the Popular Mechanics photo projects. Some of the stuff is really funny. I'm convinced that most of the stuff was quasi fiction. Most everything was a drawing and a list of parts. Still it's one of my favorite photography books. The tray rocker with a non grounded motor off a wringer washer etc. I have a neat little cabinet my Dad made from a DIY photo project. I remember he kept his developing tank, thermometer, sundries. It has 4 shelves that are designed to hold 8x10 packages of paper. Grades 1 to 4. He always used DW Kodak Medalist and Microdol-X.

Hey Dan...an off the wall idea for you. Shops that make T-shirts with thermal lettering use a heated press much like a dry mounting press. They come in sizes up to 16 by 20. Maybe look for a used one or one off Ebay?

If you leave out all the electrical bits and the concrete the Pop Mechanics press would flatten prints nicely. As shown it's basically a heated book press which bookbinders have been using since forever. Put them in there under a little pressure, go to bed and wake up to flat photos. You however would need another solution if you want to actually dry mount.

Agreed on not building a dry-mount press. They are not too hard to find, I got a nice one for < $100 locally, a while back. (I have still yet to actually use it...LOL)
For print drying, I'd probably do something with screens rather than blotters.

I hang my prints to dry the same way and same place as my negatives. They're a little curly, but fiber is always that way and the dry mount press fixes that.
Originally I had screens, but I needed the space. Plus sometimes I could see the screen pattern on my prints. Not good.

As you can see, we are making progress with the drop ceiling. Note the new heat duct in the ceiling, and we relocated the overhead light so now it fits into the drop ceiling. Also the black wire shelving is gone (and all the construction stuff that was on it!), which makes a lot more room for everything darkroom related.
I think I will need to finish the wall to the right of the door, there is room to spare to put the six foot long Delta darkroom sink there. Electricals already in there (to a point), water lines already run just on the other side of the same wall, also the Kreonite Water Board is right there, just needs to be flipped into the new work space. And the Kreonite CPT16 drain line is right there too. I think this is the easiest way to get the new long sink up and running. Next to the new sink on the white concrete wall will go the 4x4 foot Kreonite Plate Washing Sink, and the Calumet 16x20 Archival Print Washer.
Plenty to consider this weekend. Start again on Monday.
Between now and Monday I need to decide where I want everything to go (equipment placement), including the electricals. Lots of cleaning and planning between now and then.

I have a 48" Delta (beige color) that works great in my little 6'x8' Darkroom. Considered getting the larger one, but I can do just fine with what I have. I have a Versalab print washer that sits beside my sink. So, I can do up to 16x20.
Delta "The" Sinks like what we have can be purchased directly from the manufacturer. They include shipping as part of the price, and it's much less than $800, as I recall. For those that are interested, it's worth checking out.

Here you can see I am starting to put up laminated paneling to finish the inside wall space. This is where we will be doing plumbing and electricals, and this is where the sink and Kreonite Water Thermostat/Water Board will go. The six foot sink will also be mounted here, with the 4x4 Kreonite sink just along this side of the concrete wall. Building the base for the sink shouldn't take long.

I worked hard all day yesterday and just finished this darkroom sink base. It was not so easy to create, but this one fits my Delta 6 foot Sink II like a glove. And solid as solid can be. Now I will calculate how long to make the legs, so it sits perfectly. I will also install leveling feet on each leg. And a storage shelf under the sink.
This whole sink new at B&H is $1350 plus freight. I'd estimate I have spent about $150 for everything for this part of the project.

I have been looking at your darkroom build with keen interest, looking to see at how you lay things out and solve the usual problems - I have been in the process of my own darkroom build and comparing notes with your experience is helpful. I built the darkroom stand 2x3's like you for an Edwards Engineering 8ft sink (Delta no longer makes an 8ft sink). Ventilation is next.
It is s-l-o-w going; a few hours every weekend is the most I have been able to devote to it and because I am cutting and sanding wood in the room, the place is a mess. I am hoping to be able to bring in the enlargers by the end of June.

After puzzling around for a bit I figured out how to put legs on the sink frame. It's totally solid. I'll cut plywood for the lower shelf, and I might put in a second shelf. And add super heavy duty leveling feet under the legs. Have to take the legs off to get it into the darkroom, then re-assemble it. Almost done! :)
When this one is done I'll start on renovating the Kreonite plate washing sink.

It's a little further along than what the pictures show: The space under the sink has been finished and is ready for the various types of trays and a section for the drying screens. The sink is also now fully enclosed.
On the right side of the plumbing photo is an Intellifaucet Water Mixing Valve - it's covered up to protect it from the incredible amount of dust being generated by sawing and sanding wood.

I'm proud of this, I made it completely by myself. This morning my Son and I took it apart out in the garage, carried the parts down, and put it back together. I had contemplated buying a Delta steel Sink II stand, that would have been about $450. This cost total about $225 including the old Delta Sink II. I am putting HEAVY DUTY leveling feet on it, so I can adjust how it drains.
Now will move on to renovating the green Kreonite Plate Washing Sink.

The largest size I intend to print at this point is 16x20 from 4x5. Bigger than that and size problems seem to compound. I can wash 16x20s 11x14s and 8x10s in my Calumet Archival. And of course a tray and Kodak Tray Siphon works well for a single 16x20. I used to develop single 16x20s in Unicolor Print Drums on a Uniroller.

Given the size of that darkroom, I'd skip all the other safelights besides the Thomas. It will easily light that space to any level of brightness and is likely a better design as far as the pass-band of the frequency of the light (vs. the other safelights).

I know nothing of these lights, but hum is usually from a transformer. It's fine unless it becomes a buzz. A soft hum is the windings vibrating with the 60 Hz power.

I have 3 Thomas safelights, they all hum. There's nothing to get worried about. They shouldn't get real hot.,if they do something probably needs attention . The bulbs are a standard bulb. Can be bought as generic for 25 -30 bucks.
I use my all closed up with color filters for color printing.
For black and white, 1 is plenty and you only need open the vanes an inch. They take 10 minutes to warm up. I have to close mine to focus and compose prints.
Best safelight ever made.

These things take time for the bulb to warm up . Low pressure sodium vapor lamps. I turn mine on and give them at least 10 minutes to warm up. Do Not switch these on and off. Turn it on and leave it on until you are finished. Labs leave these on all day.

Today I put this second Omega DII Drop Table together. I think it came out rather well, I used the plans right of an old Peterson's Photographic book about making photo equipment. I used an expensive sheet of oak plywood wood (might as well!), and some oak strips, from the local pro woodworking store, and they even cut the pieces for me in the store. All I had to do was put it together.
A few more embellishments and it's ready to use. And some good quality heavy locking casters as well.
Looks great. I have been watching your progress. I've started renewing my space. My goal is to move out everything that's not directly being used. I have an adjacent store room. I am streamlining he operations. I have a nice table saw, but like you I went to Lowes, great guy used their panel saw to cut up some nice 3/4 " sanded ply, for some new shelving. I can't believe the amount of stuff I have accumulated, nuts, but fun

I did not realize The Thomas has a transformer.
I am very afraid of old transformers.
And new ones from some sources.

I have never meddled with the inner workings. Mine are old, and decidedly well used. I have never had the funds to buy a new one. I have replaced the lamps. Mine are on GFCI circuits but that doesn't stop a fire. Big transformers used PBB fire retardants that are loaded with dioxins. I've never heard anything about these units?

Daniel, I have a similar sink. Just a couple notes. If you have not added bottom supports, then you might consider them. The center of the sink is too pliable and subject to damage should you rap film tanks to dislodge bubbles. I put three 2x6" boards across and under the narrow sides. Lastly, I am uncomfortable using steel strips to join boards unless the boards are also glued together.
We had a drop board enlarger table and I got tired of bumping the bottom with my toe. That's just me.

Two more projects nearing completion. On the left, a 16x20 matte print dryer. Built from marine plywood, $189 a sheet. Cut for me at the Woodwerks store. On the right, a "ten minute film dryer". I built this same unit when I was 17 years old. Everything for that came from Lowes.
Both from Peterson's Photographic articles.

According to the article, this one will hold seventeen rolls of 35mm or 120. Enough capacity for me for now. You can add forced air I may do that, I used to use a cheap hair dryer, just cut a hole for it. The article also lists plans for a "drying module" which consists of a 650W cone heater and a cheap fan in a wooden box, with metal top to help deal with the heat.

You might want to look at the construction of Senrac dryers (https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-1-d&q=Senrac+dryer). They take 35mm and 120 and some 220 reels. (I'm not tempted to try to use one for 4x5 because I do not do large volumes) They are early tech, but use an air filter which perfectly corresponds to some common humidifier filters today. I use three layers folded.

Dan, a cheap old style "Bonnet" hair dryer works just fine. I'm betting that's what you used when you built the film dryer when you were a teenager. I'm using one for my current film dryer. I filter the air thru a paper air filter for a small riding mower.

I wondered how you'd manage to reach over the sink and lift a heavy chem jug off the shelf. My two store-bought sinks, placed end-to-end, have a storage shelf under them. I use the shelf on the longer sink for storing trays in DIY slots on their longer edge to air dry; the shorter sink's shelf takes the heavier liquid chems and washers (easy to reach, too). My DIY shelves above the shorter sink are for the lighter dry chems and have a lip on their edges to prevent chems from slipping off the shelf. If a dry chem were to somehow fall off, it'd land in the sink and that's a good thing. It's worth noting also that, with the agility loss that comes with aging, a folding step stool is good for reaching the highest dry chem shelves.

Bottles will go on the shelf under the sink. Chemicals will go on the lower shelf, in case of spillage. I have plenty of stuff to go on those shelves :) Thnx Guys!

Great work.
FWIW in my darkroom I hung a large, black felt-like cloth behind the enlarger to stifle reflected light. It was not an original idea of mine but just because I came about the cloth. I'm glad I did. May you also be so fortunate.
Is the washer staying in the sink? If so, make sure the sink will hold the weight of the print washer full of water...

I have that article somewhere, but I advise to not use direct air or heat if you don't have to... It is easy for heat to overdry film leaving a severe curl, and any air movement will likely carry dust/lint with it around your film, and even filters on fans are not 100% dust stopping... And movement from either of these can make the film sway around possibly making contact with other films...
Best to air dry if you can, but on soggy nights, you can make just a little heat by putting a 150w light bulb and socket inside dryer that is more gentle drying...

It's an Omegalite D 4x5 diffusion head. It uses a circular florescent bulb. It's connected to a vintage Time-o-lite and has worked very well for me. I like it for making smaller prints on graded paper.
My plan is to get a second Omega DII (actually just the column and base) so I can identical side by side enlargers. The new DII will have the Modern Enlarging Systems Model 2 LED head, which puts out 150W of LED light. Should be great for making larger prints.
I have a 180mm F5.6 Rodenstock Rodagon that I have used in the past for printing 4x5 to 16x20. I just acquired a second Rodagon, a 150mm F5.6 that matches the 180 I am familiar with.
16x20 is as big as I will go, problems compund printing larger sizes than 16x20.

Today I worked on the Omega DII enlarger. First I carefully leveled the drop table using shims, then carefully leveled the carrier section of the enlarger. Then I went out to the shop and rebuilt these two DII lens mounts, adding three-point adjustments for absolutely parallel planes in regards to the enlarging axis planes. I drilled and tapped the cones, and added mouse pad and machine bolts for tight adjusting of the lens plane.
I will use my Laser -Align tool for the final calibrating. On the easel looking with my Omega Micro Focuser the grain is quite sharp at F5.6.
I love my 180mm f5.6 Rodagon for 4x5, I was produced many sharp 16x20s with it. I just bought this 150mm F5.6 Rodagon (identical lens in terms of age) a few days ago, for when I need more magnification of the image. Nice to have both!

Been busy here's the latest. Been printing and really enjoying it. Starting to stock up on paper. Got enough for now
Been working on carriers and enlarging lenses. A good amount of metalworking still to be done. Lots of enlarging lenses to be tested.
Went to OCCS auction and have lined up boku Omega DII chassis and important parts. About to fill up the car.
Buy a LASERALIGN if you want sharp enlarger prints. Great tool

This will be the Homemade Darkroom Fume Vent. It's actually a driveway rainwater drain, but it's perfect for this use. Later today I'll buy the drain pipe and connectors to rough this thing up. The high speed duct fan will go in the laundry room.
Right now the drain is suspended by thin wires which might not be a bad solution as space in the sink is at a premium. Not a problem even with the 16x20 trays

I now view a ventilation system important for the long term, so now it is really roughed in. The Harbor Freight Dust Collection Fan is like a rocket engine. Maybe too powerful and loud, even in the other room? We will see
Also rerouted a couple of safe lights, and screwed down the power strip up high left.
This will work until I get plumbing and new electrical added. The sink is simply to contain the mess at this point. Prints get washed in the adjoining laundry room.
I have a LOT of negs I haven't seen in 25 years to print.

The Petersons Photographic Matte Print Dryer I can use it right now for air drying prints, although I'm still looking for the right place for it, it's really big and heavy. Need to build a table that fits it, with storage underneath. The lid and everything about this thing is heavy duty. I'm also glad I selected marine plywood but wow was it expensive $168 for a 4x8 sheet but it's beautiful. I have plenty of corrogated cardboard sheets (from the internet) but I will prolly buy more blotters, they are cheap at Freestyle.
No heaters in it yet, I'm debating about that. I did buy a 650w cone heater and they aren't $6 anymore. They are $39 and they make them in whatever wattage you desire. I also need to install those muffin fans you sent me and wire them in. I also bought a "Carbide tip Adjustable Circle Cutter" as well as an 18" metal platform Step Stool while at Harbor Freight.
Planning on a printing session this afternoon. I have some Arista EDU graded #2 and #3 Matte RC paper I want to try.
I also found some outdated sealed 5x7 and 8x10 Agfa Brovira fibre DW various grades that might still be usuable. We will see........... I do like the Ilford Multigrade Developer, although I also have Dektol and I used to mix GAF130 and my own Amidol I'll have to find the receipe.
I also have fifty sheets of 8x10 fibre Ektalure salon R paper, as well as some 11x14 and 16x20 frozen new from when Kodak was dumping it. My favorite fiber paper.
Right now it's all matte RC, which is easy to deal with and scans great

That's the same rain collector I used. I have the "mini" dust collector " . It's a capacitor start motor so I don't know enough to comment on remote switching. I use mine for toning and to get the heat and humidity out. I don't run it all the time, too much volume.

Not to be too negative and pendantic but that drain is not going to really be very effective as a manifold. It will draw 95% of it's air from the center round opening where it meets the pipe going to the vacuum/motor, not drawing air from the full length of the drain (vent). The higher/faster the speed of the draw (volume and velocity) the more this will be the effect (drawing from center only). Probably not a big deal though.
Looking good in general, nice efforts and progress!

Hi Again Ed,
I've heard from another here that it works OK, so on that basis I am proceeding with it. When I start toning fiber paper I will be appreciating some ventilation. I was told recently by another Guy who was visiting (very knowledgeable) that the ceiling tiles above the trays will absorb the chemicals and stain them over time. No reason for that to happen!

I've got the same setup. You're right. However I'm using a single tray upto 20 x 24. That rain collector is 36 inches wide. I don't use stinky chemistry. I use mine for 15 minutes with the darkroom door open to exhaust hot humid air when I'm using my big dryers. Comes in handy for dilution of acetic acid and stinky toner concentrates. I haven't used sulfide toners in decades.
I vent mine outside, serves the same purpose of a bathroom vent for evacuating hot, stinky, humid air.

I exposed these twenty five years ago, most have never been printed. I'm printing 8x10 RC right now (to get started) and scanning the print.
I have hundreds more to go through in large format. More than that in 120 and 35mm
Today these were printed on Arista EDU #2 paper, using my new 120mm Rodagon-WA lens. Love it! :)

They look great. Modern RC paper is great. Better printed on RC than laying in a flat file dormant. I need to figure out how to scan prints. I think I would use my all in one and scanning color. My dedicated scanner makes huge files.

Many THANKS to all contributors in this thread and others.
As to what is ahead, stay tuned. I like the Arista EDU matte #2 RC paper, it's high quality and relatively cheap, so I'm ordering an 8x10 250 sheet box from Freestyle on Tuesday. After printing on RC I will live with these "work prints" for a while, then decide how to best fibre print them. Taking notes is important but I am starting to get a "feel" for these materials respond to my equipment. It will take a -while- to go through the images I have on file. Printing five or six 8x10s in a stretch seems to be about right for me at this point.
Should be getting another DII chassis and base (hopefully next week), I will mount that on drop table #2, and attach the uber cool "Modern Enlarging Systems" LED light source on that one. Wonderful to have identical side by side enlarging machines. What I have is the "Model 2" which only works with graded paper.
Basically Phase 2 involves bringing in pro electrican, plumber, and HVAC specialists. Which we will do when we have the time, money, and energy to do it. Plus whatever comes along between now and then.
I'm stoked to be printing again. :)

Here I am adding three way adjustment of lens plane, to omega DII lensboards. With the alignment laser I can nail the parallels on the carrier stage, and the lens board stage (with this adaption). Grain wide open sharp all the way across the field. One thing I did was jettison the silly glass plate/rubber bands contraption thing, and put a UV filter on each enlarging lens. Then the calibration with laser is easy.
250 more sheets of 8x10 matte Arista EDU #2 RC ordered, for large format and 120 work prints. Also 100 sheets of 5x7 matte Arista EDU #2 RC (for 35mm and 6.5x9cm work prints). I like this paper, it comes in #2 and #3. Both papers same exposure so it makes it quick and easy.

Here's Omega DII No 2 finally here and renovation started. So far I have removed eight old plastic bushings, and replaced them with four brass and vinyl tubing idler bearings, and four load bearing radial ball bearings. The old plastic rollers were out of round and very worn, this is a very sweet upgrade. The column now slides up and down smooth as silk.
Will need a few important parts, not surprisingly. Luckily my friend has a box full of Omega DII parts :)
Good link to 2005 and the upgrades.

The DII chassis on the right, I picked up last weekend. It turns out it has a couple of issues I can't resolve, so I went to another friend, and bought a second DII chassis, this one needs cleaned up but will work properly. The first chassis I will keep for parts as these units are not expensive.
I spent the afternoon cleaning with 0000 steel wool, fine sandpaper, and various cleaners. Tomorrow I should be able to complete this second enlarger and move on with getting it installed on my new drop table.
Dirty job! :)

My new Omega 5x7 E3 Autofocus Enlarger arrived yesterday in three heavy boxes. These are the main pieces in my garage.
IT'S a BEAST.
It looks pretty good for being 70 years old! Having restored three 4x5 DII's I am ready for this. I am building a baseboard by gluing two pieces of 3/4" MTF. Lots of dirt and corrosion but I know how to deal with that. I will build a short 2x4 table to make a little bigger than 16x20s.
I also got a 4x5 condenser DII head with E3 Adapter, a homemade LED 5x7 E3 head (VERY COOL!), three E3 negative carriers, 5x7, 4x5 and 3x4. And two E3 lens cones and three E3 lenses. The two lens goodies are: The 190mm Wollensak, and the 135mm Wollensak. The enlarger came with both of those cams, the 190mm is serial number matched to the focusing cam on the enlarger column. I have a sneaking suspicion that the Wollies will hold their own for my uses.
So, away I go into 5x7! :) I also shoot 8x10 but those are contact printed.

Here the E3 Baseboard is finished. This is the bottom side, I was going to also use wood glue, but really I don't think it's going to come apart. Has over a hundred countersunk 1.25" construction screws holding it together. So this is now a 1 1/2" thick MTF baseboard.
This should support the heavy E3 5x7 Enlarger with no problems, I would think.
Now I will start to put the enlarger together, and see how everything fits together.

That's some baseboard! You can always cut it down a bit if needed. I prefer my LPL 4500-II over the 4550 XLG because the baseboard is not as long. I don't print big, so don't need it. I could print 16x20 on the 4500 if I wanted to, but 11x14 is pretty much my limit, and mostly 8x10's! Let us know how that LED head works. Everybody wants LED's instead of the quartz bulbs. Me, I'll take the ENH & ELH bulbs any day. They're cheap and they work! L

So now I need some appropriate glass, for enlarging 5x7 negs on the new E3. I went to www.glennview.com and Glenn notes the 150 F9 Schneider G-Claron works well as a 5x7 wide angle unit. It just so happens I have this lens. Once I get a good "fit" on the enlarger I will cut down the board and build the custom table so everything is at a convenient height. No need for a drop table with this one. What other lenses work well for WA 5x7?
I have the 120mm WA Rodagon but I think that's a 4x5 lens? If I'm wrong I'll be delighted.

The DII on the left, is set up to make 8x10s from 4x5 negs, using a glassless film carrier, and 4x5 Omegalite Diffusion Head. Notice the Laser Align tool sitting on the 8x10 Speed Easel. The DII on the right, is set up make 5x7s from Minolta 16 negatives, using the Modern Enlarging Systems LED Diffusion Head and a dedicted 16mm film carrier and lens, which replaces the regular enlarging lens. This will be fun. And this is why I love having multiple enlargers.

The big new Automega E3 5x7 Enlarger will probably end up in the back corner. As you can see I have moved some storage shelves around. Working to clean up the E3, I did buy an original E3 instruction book from KHB Photographix. I'm also repainting parts of the E3, removing also a lot of rust and dust. I have completely cleaned up the enlarging cones for the 135mm and 190mm Wollensaks. Also trying other lenses to see what works well with 5x7 negs.
Looks good and why not have all the enlargers you want!

When does Phase 2 start? :-)
My answer to this question has changed.
Phase I is the darkroom renovation.
Still more electricals, plumbing and carpentry to be done in the darkroom.
And also on the opposite side of the plumbed darkroom wall; now the print washing and drying area
Phase II will be the renovation of my studio, also in the basement of my house.

Thanks for your comments Greg!
Overlead LEDs replaced the florescents months ago. I need to cut down the E3 baseboard and build a custom table to go under it. Interestingly according to the original catalogs, literature, and instructions (I have obtained all of it I think), this enlarger was designed to be approached from the right side, all the controls are set up that way.

This is the flip side of my darkroom illustrated above^^
It's the washing and drying side. Green Kreonite sink will be supported on new table, and plumbed in. Yellow "sink" was made for storing two 55 gallon drums side-by-side, will be repurposed as sink (also with new table) to contain the Calumet Fibre 16x20 Print Washer, in the event of a flood. Sink will hold 25 gallons and the washer only has fifteen.
Petersons Photographic 16x20 fiber print dryer is on the right. I am finishing the wiring and installing the muffin fans.
Built some shelves today, and added a "red light" indicating I am at work. :)
Phase II is bringing in plumber and electrician, also hooking up ceiling fan to suck odors out of the inner darkroom.
Note the heavy duty dehumidifier and racks of overhead clothespins.
There's a Petersons Photographic Rapid film dryer that will handle 20 rolls of 35mm or strips of 70mm, on the far right.

The E3 is now completely up to speed, could always use further fine tuning. All three Omegas running and ready to produce prints.
I'm buying 8x10 and 5x7 Aristo Ultra #2 RC in 250 sheet boxes.
The enlarger in the middle is running 8x10s from 4x5 negs, with 180mm black Rodagon and MES LED head. The LED does speed up printing times.
The enlarger on the right is making 5x7s from 35mm, with 80mm black Rodagon. I am buying another 4x5 Omegalite head should be here soon.

After a good amount of metalwork, the E3 is much better aligned, has a new Omegalite head (my fave). Yesterday I setup four choice lenses, and on each added three point adjustments for accurate laser alignment. Lots of drilling tapping and lots of black masking tape.
Shown on the baseboard are the 180mm chrome Componon, 210mm chrome Componon, 240mm chrome Componon, and black 150mm F9 G Claron. All of these laser align to the baseboard at this point.
The E4 Omegalite looks like it will be bright enough (40W) to burn an 8x10 in a reasonable period of time. And no heat!

Then drilled and tapped the front of the unit, so that three-point alignment can be achieved. Cut mouse pad to custom fit everything. Works great.

Yesterday I made this Kodak Blotter Roll Dryer, yet another Peterson's Photographic home darkroom project. I have some old fibre paper I want to start testing. This is a quick way to dry it. Right now the dryer has a 100W heating element, which is interchangeable. Also I want to add a switch and a timer for this unit. Adding some filter material is a good idea. Gentle dry heat is the result so far.

Three unfinished projects I have been working on here and there, as I have time. Two Omega Omegalite 4x5 heads (both trashed) combined into one perfectly working unit. First unit had a bad transformer, bought the second unit for parts. Attaching some adhesive foam rubber to the bottom, and it's finished :) Good as new and cheap!
Second project is Petersons Photographic Rapid Film Washer. All plastic pipe is cut and tightly fitting just needs glued. Shown with stainless steel rod I bent to hold eight 120 steel reels (my biggest Nikor tank).
Third project is Petersons Photographic 16x20 Matte Fibre Print Dryer, all wiring completed except for the power cord. Four 640W wired in series pulls 600 watts, so I will keep the power cord short in length
Anybody know where I can get 16x20 photographic blotters, with muslin one sided? Been buying the plain blotters they sell cheaply at freestyle.
After the first of the year, I have a really big printing project coming up. Material from twenty five years ago.

Here is the completed Phase II of the darkroom side. I had a professional carpenter and also his friend the Electrician come in and finish this space. Lots of brainstorming and the design is perfect. It's warmer on this side of the wall, and I like developing film in this area. Total cost about $2000 The green Kreonite plate washing sink is a LOT more useful than I would have imagined.
Next big project is to build a retro 1960's era commercial studio. I have all the equipment, just need money for construction and select a start time when this Covid stuff has lessened.

My Kreonite color processor had three flow meters. The extra two I left on the water board (spares I guess).
I'm opening my second 250 sheet box of Arista 8x10 matte #2. Fibre printing will start up when I produced some decent RC work prints. I've got a lot that's never been printed.
I'm just happy when I work in the darkroom. I continue to work on this as I have time and energy.
To work with this enlarger you approach it from the right side, it is designed that way. Works well in this space. Long print processing sink is only a few steps away

I saw that Tim Layton built this unit, so followed his lead and I had fun building this. The ulility light was $10 at Home Depot, I removed the clamp mechanism. The box is made from foam core board and masking tape. I put my Multigrade 6x6" #00 & #5 variable contrast filters in cardboard frames, so I can change the filtering out by touch, under the dark safelights.
I tried a 7.5W bulb, amazingly way too bright for RC VC paper. So I ordered ROSCO ND sheets from B&H, in .6 and .3 densities. About a thirty second or longer time is what I am looking for, so I have time for burning and dodging.
The four suspension wires keeps the box level and keeps it from swinging around in the dark.

I've picked up a nice seamless paper background system from B&H, which uses three plastic chains to raise and lower the paper at will. Very cool good working system. So far I have black, super white, and blue jay colored paper. Rolls right down, neatly and super quick rolls back up out of the way
I also hung up two painted James Bright canvas backgrounds, which are quite cool. And I have two more narrow hand painted backgrounds out in front, fairly easy to raise and lower.
This is a work in progress but I am getting where I want to be with this. I do have more parts coming from B&H.
Every studio needs a good background system.

Since we are all locked down I have been working on restoring my old Normas, as they are more than sixty years old, they need some attention. This is my 5x7, I have put in some new light sealing foam in the front and rear standards, and also new foam in this new to me Sinar Norma Shutter. I sent the shutter out for cleaning (it was sticky inside) and replaced the sync cord, although for whatever reason, it is still not firing with strobes. I will get it sorted eventually, for now I will use my other Norma Shutter with my strobes in the studio, it fires 100%. The lens is a Sinar Norma 121mm F8 Super Angulon, forward mounted with copal shutter built-in, and full Norma Auto Aperture automation. This is the most deluxe way you could get this lens from Sinar at the time. Looking forward to shooting more HR-U XRay film with this new to me camera. Should make fantastic split-grade VC RC prints.
Also new in the studio are these background clamp weights from Savage, which keeps my seamless paper from rolling up by itself, and keeps the background tight and smooth looking. I can roll up or down in ten seconds any of my three colors of background paper, I have blue, black, and white. All three shown staggered against my studio back wall.

All three shown staggered against my studio back wall.Daniel, very impressive! What's your trick on the filter holder ring fitting with the Norma? Filing the hexagonal rod? Thanks in advance!

No tricks required, you simply have to get the original Norma filter holder, the more modern version is different. The Norma FH has a red dot on it, and the original Norma hex rods had a red dot also. When properly put together you get the 45 degree swing with the Norma camera which works beautifully. When they came out with the newer F/P/C cameras things changed, since the rod is in a different place and they are really not interchangeable. Well, the hex rods are, of course, but not the holder.

I simply ground some extra flats on one of my hex rods (now an "oct" rod), allowing me to use it on either an F camera or in either regular mode or diagonal position on the Norma. I don't have one of those flip-away filter holders, but might hypothetically be able to adapt a spare darkroom one. Wouldn't want to, however, because I use the rod for sake of a compendium shade made from a short section of F/P series box bellows. Gosh, they made all sorts of accessories.

Another digital test shot, building up Tim Kelly lighting in my smaller portrait space. Here I have exchanged the 60x60 Broncolor Pulsoflex Softbox, with the biggie globular Broncolor Balloon head, on a 300 ws Broncolor Impact Monolight. Light measured with Broncolor FM2 digital strobe metered measures F16 at Ei 100. The idea with this light is an overall soft directional fill, lighting as much background as possible. In these close quarters the Balloon head is definately the way to go, I can't imagine a softer light source with this one. Of course it falls off from side to side, just like windowlight but artifical. A good upgrade from using a small soft box, it didn't light enough of the set for my uses. This is my other cool James Bright canvas painted 9x12 foot background. I'll be changing up my background setup soon but it's going to be a bit of carpentry involved but well worth it. I'll be adding more lights to build this set up further

Looks like you have a lot of stuff!
I use an Omega B-22XL with a color head which I use for VC B&W paper.

No color anymore.

I have decided to finally set up by Kodak 8x10 Hard Rubber Tanks, with floating lids, and Kodak Film Baskets. I can do 18 8x10's in a run, or 48 sheets of 4x5. Or 18 rolls of 120 film in a go. I think I will start with Replenished D23 as a starter. I have 500 sheets of 8x10 HRU, as well as multiple boxes of various 8x10 films. I just bought a fresh box of Arista 200 8x10 (On Sale) which I think is FOMA 200. Also I have an 8x10 Kodak Hard Rubber Wash Tank, it is in the front right, hooked up well and running great.

Installed today the olde 8x10 Kodak 3F 15 liter Processing Tanks, one for dev, fixer, and Special Wash Tank. Only takes up half the sink! The other half right now has my Combiplan LF Sheet Film Tanks, one dev and one fix, and special wash tanks. Going to start with 15 liters of straight D23, will the D23 Replenisher too. I can run a lot of sheet film 4x5, 5x7, and 8x10 in hangers. Also made some special hangers for Jane Lane 6.5x9cm Dry Plates. Need to make some additional of those. This is great and I think I'll just leave it set up. There is extra bracing which I figure I need supporting heavy deep tanks. Good use of a very small space.

Front left Developer D23 Straight Replenished. Rear Left TF4 Film Fixer. Center right, 3F Kodak Wash Tank. All tanks fully filled, ready to process some 8x10 Sheets. Going to develop by Inspection, some 8x10 Ilford Ortho ISO 50, bought fresh from B&H. I made the lid covers from sheet Plexiglass cut by Home Depot, then added rubber sealing all around the bottom of each lid. Keeps from evaporation and should last a very, very long time.
When developing by inspection will you use a green safelight and foot switch or infrared monocular of some kind?

Jason Lane recommended this setup, he uses it when coating plates? Anyway it's great, I call it THE DOUBLE SAFE SAFELIGHT. A 3W LED bulb from Lowes, in the classic Bullet Kodak Safelight. And then a 1A Deep Red Kodak Safelight Filter. So double safe and very bright.
I've developed sheet film out to 25 minutes, with no fog ever, it's direct not bounced. I can see the developing image very well under this safelight. It's fantastic! Like it so much, I bought a second one, used in the back corner for film cutting and loading. Highly recommended.

What is "Agitation the Kodak way"? Lift and tilt? Seems to work. My Kodak books weren't fireproof. I had issues with hyper developed spots from the hanger holes but that was 40 years ago and it's not fresh in my memory.
