View Full Version : Black and White Scanners?

To add to the foray of the recent topics on scanning B&W and following a digital workflow, I have my own question:

If you only need to scan B&W negatives which scanner would you purchase?

I know many people have opinions about which is better. For my use, I would be interested in the best solution for scanning 4X5, 4X10, and 8X10 (developed in rollo pyro) and printing rather large.

If wet mounting is necessary to get the best scan, I wouldn't mind the effort, but what scanner benefits the most from extra effort? I have made my own holder to scan 4X10 on my 3200 but I am pushing the limits. I am not sure how difficult it would be to wet mount 4X10 or 8X10 but perhaps someone here does it?

Thanks

If you are talking flatbed with light passing through rather than reflected off the negative, and need 8x10, then I don't think you have all that many choices. Microtek has at least a couple, including the 1800f.

epson's 4990 is supposed to do 8x10.

i get great results with 4x5 b+w on a 4870.
