View Full Version : Regarding the composition of VC papers

Since my recent post about the tendency of VC papers to split-tone with selenium, the higher values toning less (or, at least, less rapidly) as dilution increases, a question mark arose, as to how this might be solved in the manufacture, or whether it's simply a "fact of life," so to speak. If I recall, VS papers (usually) incorporate both (principally) chloride and bromide emulsions, one of which one is the low-contrast one. One tones more easily than the other, leading to the cited result.

The split toning effect seems to me to be a bit more pronounced in Ilford Warmtone than in MG Classic, but I could be mistaken. In any case, I thought maybe one of our paper chemistry experts might elucidate the reasons that this occurs and the obstacles to having high- and low- contrast emulsions that tone equally.
