Hello all. I'm happy to announce that there will be a show of my pictures at Portland's Camerawork Gallery, beginning September 29th. The show will feature nearly 30 platinum prints, all from film, representing a wide variety of formats, from 35mm up to 5" X 7," printed as large as 16" X 20."

Despite my claim that my last presentation would be THE LAST presentation, I'll be giving a presentation from 3pm-4pm on opening day, September 29th. This will be my last presentation. A reception will follow from 4pm-6pm.

Below is a link to the gallery with more information.

I hope to see you there!

Best Regards,

Austin

Congratulations!

Why is this your last presentation?

Are these wet work Platinum or Inkjet Platinum?

Rorye, Mathieu, Archphotofisher, Ken, Doug, Steve, Thalmees, thank you!

Randy, thanks. The prints are wet work platinum made from enlarged internegatives in collaboration with fellow forum member Paul Cunningham. In a nutshell, the process goes from negative to scan to digital file to enlarged internegative to platinum print. I suppose that's kind of a roundabout way to do things, but it works well for me and I'm pleased with the results.

As for the talk, well honestly, these things are hard for me. I'm generally comfortable talking with people one on one, but standing up there in front of a crowd is a different story. I'm getting anxious even typing this right now. I'm told I do okay, but man do I put myself through the wringer beforehand! I also think it'll be the last because after this, I feel like I want to unplug a bit and deep focus on some ongoing projects, and on trying to become a better photographer. Thanks again.

Hello Austin:
Congratulations on your exhibition at the Camera Work Gallery!
I purchased your book several months ago and would love to SEE your prints in person, but Portland is not in my travel plan any time soon.
Your work is inspirational to me on many levels.

They say just imagine someone in the crowd in their underwear - if that doesn't work, just picture me in my underwear, if that doesn't work - bourbon.

I was in Portland this past week with some free time so decided to walk from downtown to the Camera Work Gallery on Tuesday to see Austin’s show. It appeared that some unrelated activity was in progress with tables set up in front of the prints and way too many people crowded into the space with no way to view the prints. Disappointing!

I'm sorry to hear that JP. Directly behind the gallery is an auditorium that gets frequent use; I imagine there was some event related to that going on. I hope if you're passing through Portland again, you'll give it another shot. The exhibit will be up through November 2nd. Thank you for visiting, even if you were thwarted.

If anyone is interested in hearing the talk I gave at the opening (combined with the slides I showed), below is a link. Honestly, I can't bear to listen to the thing, but I was told by people not related to me that they enjoyed it. Thanks all!

Here's an idea of what the show looks like. 29 prints in all.
It's really best to see them in person but you can view the digital versions at http://www.austingranger.com and find the prints at http://www.thecunninghampress.com

Beyond impressive aesthetics, those images have an incredible depth that I'd like learning how is crafted... not easy...

Austin...I'm blown away that your work exhibits such variety and yet you do all of this with such obvious reverence to what each subject says to you and how each subject engages you.

Also...speaking as one who, when wearing my "instructor hat" has no real trouble with verbalizing and engaging with others relating to their work, I tend to stumble when addressing my own work - and after watching your video I'm truly inspired by how you step up to this challenge with such a natural grace.

At any rate...congrats - and I'm sorry that I cannot make it out to see your exhibit.

...and I also appreciate your considering the possibility of taking more time to concentrate on making photographs, and a bit less time engaging in "promotional" activities.

The amount of time I've spent over the past year... printing, matting, framing, and generally attending to all that is required to prepare and hang exhibits, plus other publicity-related activities, has taken a huge bite out of time that I could have spent photographing and, yes, continuing to evolve creatively. Gotta change this!
