These images are from the collection of my father in law Al Paterson, he amassed an amazing collection of trains in and out of GTA , sadly the collection was lost to a museum under shady circumstances that my wife and here sisters and brothers are not willing to fight.

Stephen, I like this one and hope you were a safe distance from those tracks. How did you meter with and use the stacked graduated ND filters? Did you use the Zone System or use the filters to tame the highlight values in the sky? Just curious on your method here.

The train was stationary so all good there. I did use the zone system, but metered the brightest part of the sky and then the train and figured out how many stops different which was about something like 10. I then stacked my 3 stop and 5 stop grad nds with the second fading to zero above the grad nd behind it as I was trying to keep the brightest areas of clouds from blowing out. I then set the shutter to the area of the front of train. Which would be zone V. I should have metered on the darkest area at bottom of train and adjusted that to be zone III. But then I would run the risk of blowing out clouds. As it turns out I think that area did end up in zone III.
The sky in Palouse hat weekend was bright as hell even with clouds. I have a digital image I stacked the grad nds and pulled it off. There was around 10 stops difference there as well.
Hope this helps. And thank you for compliments.

Not sure any other optic of a shorter focal length than 210mm will cover 8x20. Maybe the best option is a stitched scanned two shot process to get the whole locomotive in the image area.
I had the thought of stitching until I remembered this was 8x20. It would be a huge file to start with! I shoot a lot of trains (obviously) and I would have simply photo'd one set of drivers. Everyone will have their own approach, of course.

I would have simply photo'd one set of drivers.Hi Kent,
From the online descriptions of the Yosemite locomotive, the front driver set pivots to accommodate track curvature, so the front and rear driver sets are not identical.

As Michael says, 210mm on 8x20 is about as wide as one can get.
I used the awesome 210mm Super Symmar XL, but the confining placement of the loco forced me to choose which segment to photograph.
Kent's suggestion of stitching two shots (cab end and cowcatcher end) didn't occur to me. (grrrr).
An 8x40 contact print... maybe include the tender... hmmmmm.

If your problem is in the highlights I would say be sure not to clip your highlights during the scan. Just open it up a bit with the sliders for the shadows and dark values. Some scenes demand slides others work with negative film. That's how I operate. I also tend to overexpose a notch (say rate Provia 100 at 80) because I find a lighter slide is easier to suck the shadow detail out of when scanning.

Somehow, engine #102 of the Georgia Northern ended up in Currie, MN! Built in 1923. It made a great subject for me to try out my newly mounted lens--an 1862 12 inch Voigtlander Petzval! It's been a long time since I've been around here but I'm really hoping to start spending more time with LF again. I figured I'd start by looking through the threads for one of my favorite subjects and this thread on trains certainly didn't disappoint. Some really excellent work in here that inspires me to get out more with my LF gear!
Here's a shot from the Korona 8x10 that I picked up when I decided to start shooting 8x10 again:

These images are from the collection of my father in law Al Paterson, he amassed an amazing collection of trains in and out of GTA , sadly the collection was lost to a museum under shady circumstances that my wife and here sisters and brothers are not willing to fight.
They are worth fighting for. Wonderful to see.

Beautiful! I used to take my kids to that park to fish and play on the train cars. IIRC, that loco is on a trestle that is not accessible to the public. The kids used to love hiking below Morrow Point Dam.

Thank you! I just took my kids there too and I can imagine a place like this bringing back memories. Steam locomotives always bring back memories for me as I recall riding them in India when we travelled cross country.

I've always though trains were "cool" ever since I was a little kid. Do you know if this train is still run, for excursions?

It's in a state park dedicated to the local history of the area, the train hasn't run there since the 40's. If you want to ride a train you'll have to go to Durango and ride the Durango-Silverton Narrow Gauge.

2TRAINZ, Cleveland, Ohio
This is a former warehouse was built in 1901 that constructed many large objects including pieces of the Hulett Ore Unloader. I just loved the elevated trestle that enters the building and splits into two tracks. Never seen anything so unique in terms of industrial trackage. This is part of my larger project on the American railroad called "Railroad Landscapes".
The "2TRAINZ" graffiti is fitting.
