5 years later...

Here's what we did last time with 5X7. http://www.largeformatphotography.info/forum/showthread.php?109766-Feeler-exploration-for-Wanted-10-people-for-5x7-print-exchange-2014-year-1&p=1094541&viewfull=1#post1094541

Last event went very well. No need to read the whole thread.

NEW PLAN

8X10/11X14 inches maximum print with mount or backing no bigger than 11X14 inch size if needed. (see box size below)

Image must be LF as defined by this forum. Source 4X5 or bigger. Reductions OK!

Image capture MUST be after this date. Nothing old. Shoot new. Please.

Contact prints from 8X10 are highly encouraged.

Fiber or RC. Alt anything. No digital prints of any kind. Prints from LF digital negs as defined by this forum are encouraged.

Dry printing such as photogravure are encouraged.

Once again you must have 25 or more non FS forum posts as of this date to participate.

The participation limit is 18 with 3 on the wait list, in case of dropout. List will be 21 long. Less is more.

Cost for outgoing shipping. $21 cash USD in the print box sent to me. You pay to get your box to me. Anyone worldwide welcome but must include enough funds to get the outgoing shipment to you. Last time there were International shipping delays. Ship early.

Be aware of the 11X 14 inch maximum so ALL 18 prints fit in a 15-1/4 X 12-3/8 X 3 inch USPS Priority Mail box. (https://store.usps.com/store/product/shipping-supplies/priority-mail-box---1095-P_O_1095)

A goal of prints to me after Jan 1, 2019, and before Jan 31, 2019. I ship outgoing by Feb 28, 2019.

Sign up list closes Dec 1. 2018 or earlier.

Plenty of time, maybe!

No prints may be scanned and published in any manner without permission. I will scan nothing. No image file for the forum or anywhere unless participants agree and post their own work.

17-Jul-2018, 06:19
Now we are 5 and that's enough to do this but we want 18!

Please consider joining soon as last time latecomers lost out.

The list will go to an absolute maximum of 18 plus 3 on the wait list to a published total of 21 in this thread.

After the list fills or closes Dec 1, 2018 we will move to PM and email.

This is the discussion thread, ask questions, chat with each other. Please!

Ok, so I won't add you to the list until you positively say yes.

But this exercise is for everyone and all skill levels, that makes the collection very interesting and valuable.

A personal note.

My Darkroom is not ready, but it will be, my 6-week goal. I have large objects placed. Paint soon. Install 2 wall enlargers and then do plumbing.

Meanwhile, I am thinking of what I want to shoot. And can shoot.

I need to learn again how to focus sharply on a GG. My eyes have changed drastically. I am experimenting with solutions. I will get a sharp image even if I have to someone else set infinity stops and shoot 'blindly'!

All life is a challenge.

Join us!

Hello Randy:
I have been reading about the print exchange program with great interest and excitement over the past few days.
I just now discovered that as of 07-16-18 I am 4 posts short of the target 25 posts.
Is there any way that I might still be considered for this exchange?
I would value greatly the opportunity to participate.
I contact print 8x10.
Thank you.

I'm sorry I slipped in conviction. It WAS to be 18 and now I have let 21 in.

That is the max, I will not raise again. That's all the box will hold.

However last time 2 dropped out, so the number may be less than 21.

Today is September 1, 2018.

We now have 3 months until December 1, 2018, which is not a deadline, but simply a date to remind us all to keep at it.

I have personal challenges that have beset me. Focusing on a GG and even more on a enlarged print is very difficult for me now.

However, I will persevere and adapt. Almost certainly I will make contact prints.

And the beat goes on! I like this version. (https://youtu.be/bS3O5zg290k?t=3)

Director: I've got this groovy idea for the new music mini-movie... you cats are in a barn, all mellow, just singing...
Sonny: Yeah?
Director: And you're wearing parkas and gloves, like Eskimos.
Cher: uh-huh...
Director: and it's in black and white...
Sonny: Is that it?
Director: ... well... yeah, baby
Sonny: Cool, Man. Cool.

November 1 2018 Deadline Reminder.

Which is actually a 2 month warning.

To avoid upcoming Holiday shipping please ship prints to me after Jan 1, 2019, and before Jan 31, 2019. I ship outgoing by Feb 28, 2019.

Please order these free in USA #1085 USPS shipping boxes and use them. (https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1964/43846126040_8e6b0a8090_z.jpgUSPS Boxes by TIN CAN COLLEGE, on Flickr)If we all use these free boxes I will be able to fit all return prints in it. And you will get your print back in a new box making a complete set to store. No the USPS boxes are not archival...

I also urge we all make 21 prints and everybody ship to me 21 prints. Makes it easier to sort, stack and box all 21 without figuring out what boxes need 1 less.

The boxes come shrink wrapped and can take weeks to receive.

Last time nobody used a front mat (I think!), some used thin mounting board, many just sent a flattened print.

The only rule is that everyone's 21 should fit in the specified box.

If there is room in the box, I may interleave with quality copy paper.

First I make 1 pile to check how it stacks up, if room for interleaving I will add that.

Then make the 21 piles, box, label and ship.

All questions are good questions!

1/1/19 Update

Today is the first day to ship. Please try to ship by January 31 2019.

Now I am ready to shoot negatives, as my Darkroom just got running water last week!

Deadlines are good as they make us strive to meet them.

At least that works best for me. :)

Very excited to see what we all print and exchange.

Happy New Year!

Hi Printers,

Two boxes have arrived. One has bending damage to the box middle, the box ends were not crushed. A few prints are slightly crimped in the middle, but not all are. It is minimal on left center edge for 1". Maybe fixable with a hot press. I will not do that as I don't want that responsibility.

I suggest anyone that has not yet shipped include something to strengthen the box.

I have used old mat board, thin plywood, foamcore, etc. The box is same cost for any weight I think to over 20 lbs lbs, so steel plate could be used. NOT suggested as that amount of sharp edged mass will rip the box open. I had that happen with a lens shipment last month. Heavy lens...the outer box was wide open. All good.

Hendrik has stated here that his box is coming from EU and I know US customs is working as I had a China shipment pass Chicago customs this weekend.

Mine are almost ready, just to flatten them and pack, they will be shipped before the end of this week. Hopefully they'll make it across the Atlantic in time.
I originally intended to use just matboard, but the plywood idea is not bad... I should have some 6mm offcuts from a recent project...

Okay.

Well, this project has been a much larger challenge for me than I anticipating. At the very least, I've been able to get a lot done in making developing and printing 11x14 possible because of the prospect of the deadline, but I'm still not sure I'm going to make it.

I'm still not sure I'm going to be able to succeed. This weekend will be the printing weekend. I hope, then, I'll have a box in the mail by the end of next week.

I apologize for any confusion.

What I posted from the beginning and never changed are these 2 crucial sentences, as posted in post #1

"...8X10/11X14 inches maximum print with mount or backing no bigger than 11X14 inch size if needed. (see box size below)...

...Be aware of the 11X 14 inch maximum so ALL (18 now 20) prints fit in a 15-1/4 X 12-3/8 X 3 inch USPS Priority Mail box..."

The only change I did is let 3 more people from a wait list in, so 18 became 21, now 20 with one dropout. That was noted in another post.

I suggest everybody ship however they can and let me deal with any issue.

Thank you

You guys need a certificate of sorts to go along with, someday these portfolios may be worth millions.

USA does not have Droit de Suite (https://hyperallergic.com/153681/an-illustrated-guide-to-artist-resale-royalties-aka-droit-de-suite/) which means nothing going forward will accrue for any copyright inheritors. Some here may have rights USA does not.

Perhaps if one of us becomes world famous, leaves USA. And we signed, dated, numbered our editions providing provenance the pittance could buy coffee.

Color me disenchanted, but please only tones of grey.

Ok, we have reached February 2.

If you have sent your package, no worries, we are ready.

If you have not sent your package please do so, as soon as you can. LF IS slow!

Most deadlines are artificial, we will wait patiently for any stragglers.

I will box and ship what we have, not before the end of February.

If anyone needs an address change for outgoing shipments, please advise by PM or email.

Thanks everyone!

Good news Angus!

We have 2 more coming, we will wait.

By the way, I have only opened 2 boxes, the first to take a peek and one that had box damage. It was OK inside.

Then I realized i should not open anymore until they are all here.

1. it can get confusing if I don't keep everything together in one place. Also cleaner for the prints.

2. I didn't want the incoming prints to influence me in my choice of subject and print execution. I stuck to my choice.

3. When they are all here I will get them out asap.

4. I will tell everyone the day before they ship, in case somebody changes address...

I am very excited!

My 2 cents: I would set a deadline and then ship what you have when it's reached. It doesn't matter when the deadline is, but there should be one. Otherwise, you're likely to get strung along indefinitely. If someone's box arrives late, well, that's on them. If there's another exchange, then you can always include their print in that one.

Tin Can
1-Mar-2019, 11:26
Good advice Peter. Thank you.

I have Jury Duty Tuesday.

Tuesday I have no control over. I will decide on a deadline...

That depends on each individual member of the the 2019 Print Exchange. I won't scan any and I hope we all respect each other and only post our own.

We will vote by participation or not, right in this thread AFTER everybody gets their set of prints. I hope!

The main idea of a Print Exchange is looking at other prints in hand. IRL as it were....

Good thoughts Hendrik!

I am going to hold on to the extra prints just in case there are any shipping problems, such as loss of packages or damage to prints.

Shipping in USA is fairly quick, any country outside USA can and does encounter significant delays.

Another idea comes to mind.

We had 2 acknowledged dropouts with good reasons, both family emergencies. We could sent them a gift.

One person did not acknowledge their dropout. Only silence. That person will not get a gift. Still active on this forum, I could view presence.

Let's wait and see what happens after all participating members get their package.

I expect #17 any day now...:)

6 out of 17 cannot count to 20, or I cannot. 19 only.

Which means I need to make 6 special sets and make sure the right set gets sent to the right special subset.

One person sent too many, no problem but I need to be aware of that so I don't wonder where I went wrong....

About 1/3 didn't sign their work, so I marked them with pencil lower right back with their 'The List' number.

You all will need to print out the 'The List' for yourselves to identify members and prints.

I could go back and scramble those numbers...just for fun...

but I won't :)

News of the Day

All 2018/2019 Print Exchange packages were just shipped.

USA, all were 2 or 3 day Priority, depends on East vs West coast.

Two went to the water logged Middle USA...:(

One to Asia is also Priority Mail but slower, however cheaper than 1st class. It contains 2 Print sets to one address from 2 members here.

Three to EU, all went Ist class, as it was significantly cheaper.

Let's continue our communication on this thread. Soon I will delete all PM's as I always do.

I should have asked for everyone's email, as then you could have gotten shipping updates automatically.

I sent one of my prints to my only Photography Instructor from 20 years ago. We maintain contact.

Another one of mine I handed to Bloodhoundbob of this forum last night in my home.

Please let us know on this thread when you get your prints.

I am still not sure about sharing my print online here and I know I won't share any of yours.

If 8 of 17 want to post their prints here on this thread. I will also, making a majority, after the first 8 post.

Nobody has to post any image and nobody should post any other images. I will flag outsiders.

I enjoyed the entire process! :)

Greatly appreciated.
A couple of months ago I was quite taken by the Alexander Den Heijer quotation that follows your posts ... It really got my attention.
It has inspired and energized me such that I am exploring new (to me) photographic arenas ... namely Harman Direct Positive printing and Albumen printing.
Working with Albumen has been stuck on my back burner for nearly a year. I will make my first prints next week.
These new areas of study are both challenging and exciting and I am having a blast!
I am now doing what "sparks me" in one way or another every day.
Thank you for sharing this quotation in your posts!

(I'm not sure the number of mine, since I accidentally only shipped 19 and only found my 20th amongst my test shots a couple days later)

* Title: "Angel Wing Begonia".
* 11x14 Harman Direct Positive Paper.
* Developed in Caffenol for 4 minutes
* ISO 3, f/22 @ 1 minute 10 seconds.
* Homemade 11x14 w/Schneider 360mm.

Since this variety of begonia is red on the underside of the leaves, I thought it'd make for an interesting subject for this orthochromatic paper.

The International packages are close to delivery.

Singapore may win this race, 2 members are in one box, #9 pound & #15 takpro.

I'm guessing #18 hendrik faure is also close, but who knows!

I have decided to follow Peter's good example, his print posting, by posting my print as soon as all packages are delivered.

It's hard to believe that our sluggish postal service would beat the German, but the parcel has arrived, from the outside seems fine. I'll open it later once I have a quieter moment (e.g. once the kids are fed and tucked in bed :) )

Andreios, it is true.
Furthermore we live in a lost region of Germany (mostly a blessing), waiting for international sendings can be a challenge.
Nothing was announced up to now

I do understand the blessing of living in a sleepy corner, same as ours...
Anyway, the prints are excellent, such a variety of approaches... last night I spent over an hour going through them back and forth.
It has the main effects on me - to print more and finally start actually learning the photogravure process... :)

Again thank you Randy for arranging this exchange.

#18 hendrik faure has informed me his box will take a long time to deliver to him. Tracking last reported the box March 22 leaving Frankfort. He also said he will post his 2 prints at that time. (he made 2 sets because his process cannot print 20 of one, so some got one or the other at random).

I will post mine shortly

sending arrived
I had a discussion with the custom officer about the commercial value.
Following old habits I confused her so much, that she finally gave up and charged me nothing.

Thank you all for your great contributions,
Randy thank you for a lot of work!

My prints derive from 8x10 negativs, taken by shutterless American Optical Portrait lens (f about 350 mm?).

I want to thank all participants in this Print Exchange.

It took a while, but it came together exactly as planned.

I highly value your prints and find prints in hand always exceed any online or digital representation.

The mix was about 50/50 8X10 and 11X14.

I think my mistake was combining 11X14 with 8X10 for a couple reasons. Shipping is more expensive in USA and worldwide with any package over 12" at the longest.

And the larger package is not quite as strong as a tight fitted 8X10 box.

If a next time, all prints should be flattened and not mounted on anything.
