There's already a thread for medium format infrared, but I couldn't find one for 35mm or digital infrared images. So here goes...post your 35mm or digital infrared images, any subject, color or black-and-white.

I'll start, here's one of a small floating dock on the lake I went to last summer. Nikon F100, FPP InfraChrome film, Nikon 70-200 F/2.8 VRII, with a 16 orange filter.

Nice work everyone! Keep 'em coming! Here's another of mine. FFP InfraChrome film, but with a yellow filter, instead of an orange one. I have to say, I think I prefer the orange filter, with this film.

Gosh this thread makes me consider getting my old D700 converted...

If your D700 is in nice shape, you might be able to sell it and buy a used already converted camera for similar $.. Converted cameras have less resale value, but take the photos we want.

All of the grip material is falling off and it has over 200k shutter actuations, so it's not worth much. And I'd be worried the shutter would die right after I converted it...also I would probably feel limited by 12mp - or do you find the usable resolution improves with such a modification? Have you printed much from your D800? Honestly I would probably want to burn negatives of any excellent images to make silver prints from such a camera.

Most of what I have posted here is from my Nikon D70. It only has 6mp. The last image I posted is from my Nikon D2x. It has 12mp. I have printed 13x19 inch prints without any problems with the D70. The D2x does better while printing, but I still like the look of the D70 more.

Thanks Jon. I'll have to stick to full-frame so as to make use of the lenses I have (if I want to get ultrawide that is, without buying more lenses). But good to know wrt the pixel count.

Well, right now I can't afford it anyway, but perhaps next year :).

I upgraded from a converted D100 to a D800 (a member here sold the converted D800 to me). I only print up to 13x19 with it. Converted cameras are slightly sharper as I think one of the sensor filters goes away. The major advantages to the use of the newer camera are: full frame so I can use wide angle lenses as they were intended, 2. more dynamic range that you don't get in vintage digital cameras, 3. Video recording.

I wish I had a IR converted D800, but this image was made with my old Nikon D70. This coloration is typical of the standard IR filter provided by Life Pixel. I would say that 90% of the images start with this coloration. Sometimes it works, but not always. When it does not work, the best solution is to convert it to black and white. In fact, it can be a problem to tone the 'red' down.

I do have a Nikon D800, but it is my main 'normal' non-LF camera. I can't afford to replace it yet, so it will not get converted to IR.

A non-modified digital camera with IR filter over the lens can be used as well.
The exposure times at ISO 100 will run into seconds but the IR effect is as good as it gets.
You may need to create a special profile for Adobe Raw Converter to deal with the color temperature (extensive Red).

Thanks for the clarification, Jon, I got the model number mixed up wither others' posts. Some of the images in this thread are amazing. As a complete novice to serious digital cameras (I do have a point and shoot) I imagine that a converted camera has an IR filter mounted in front of the sensor. However it's done the results are very interesting in their own right.

Thanks also Sergey. I've never shot IR, digital or film. A friend gave me several rolls of Rollei IR film in 120. I'd better get me the appropriate filter and have a play with it.

Since the cameras I have converted (D70 and D2x) do not have live view, I am using just one lens: Nikkor AFS 18-70mm 3.5-4.5 G ED

Per LifePixel, the D700 has this problem: "These models make use of Nikon’s new infrared self-diagnostic shutter monitor circuitry. This function involved an internal infrared LED emitter/detector chip that could fog images. In most cases it will not be an issue unless you shoot in overcast weather using higher ISO and/or longer exposures."

Yes, IR can be spectacular. Exposure and image selection is key.

Late last year, I was twiddling my thumbs one Saturday morning with nothing of consequence to do, so on a whim I decided to remove the hot filter / dust shaker / cover glass from the sensor of my Samsung NX500 and convert it to a full-spectrum camera.

I had a Hoya R72 filter on hand from a previous dabble with IR photography using my non-converted Fuji X-Pro1 and started to experiment with photographing in infrared light handheld, usually while I was walking my dog around the neighborhood.

Here are a few of my recent results, taken using Contax N 17-35/f2.8 and 24-85/f3.5-4.5 zooms via a Fotodiox Fuji X-mount adapter I also had on hand and modified so it will mount on my NX500 and allow these lenses to focus at infinity:

Yes. Not to get into a detailed technical discussion, but the D70 has more IR sensitivity (a weaker IR blocking filter) than most other DSLRs, so you can do something useful by getting a 720nm or 760nm IR filter (these can be inexpensive, I got one on ebay) and using it unconverted. You will still need long exposures and bracketing. The above were about 1 second at f/8, and I use the self-timer or a simple IR remote to trigger the shutter. I recommend googling around for which lenses to use - some work better in the IR than others. Prime lenses with an IR focusing mark are good, but some models have undesirable reflections. Fortunately, experimenting is easy.

If I remember correctly.... This was shot in April, in the evening. So yes, I believe it had rained earlier.

I replaced the internal IR cut-off filter with a Lee polyester 87 filter in about an hour if you include the 2 re-dos I had to do in order to get the ribbon cables seated properly....

As is often the case, the answer to your question is "it depends."

For example, when I converted my Samsung NX500 by removing the cover glass / hot filter / dust shaker mechanism, I knew I was only ever going to use adapted, manual-focus lenses with it, so it wasn't necessary for me to insure the camera could still autofocus NX-mount lenses, only that it could reach infinity focus with my adapted lenses.

Fortunately, the adjustment range built into the sensor mounting bracket is sufficiently large that I was able to tweak its position after I removed the cover glass, et al such that my lenses will indeed focus at infinity without replacing it.

Whether this method will also work with other camera / lens combos depends upon the other cameras and lenses.

Very one thinks of landscapes when they think of IR but I really like it for portraits and people. The first is a portrait of my wife on 35mm Kodak High Speed IR. The 2nd & 3rd are with a Colari converted D3100 Nikon and the 4th is from a documentary series on tattoos. I felt IR gave a slightly different look due to IR’s ability to penetrate the outer layer of skin.

I started shooting IR back in the 60’s before the days of high speed IR. The original film was slower than high speed but it could be loaded in the camera in daylight. Many years later Konica introduces a slow but excellent IR film in 120. Other makers have introduced IR films but I’ve not had great success with them.

...but I really like [IR] for portraits and people.

So do I; I have done some IR work with people. Maybe I'll dig-out a few images and post them. I really like color infrared film, and have been playing with Kodak HIE, too.

Each season of the year seems to have different clouds. This was last week at Alford Lake, Hope Maine. Converted D800.

Nice work, I really like the puffy clouds in the first image. They give it the classic summer day look that I remember as kid on summer vacation. The point-of-view of the second image makes it seem almost abstract (at least to me), which I find interesting.

I need to dig through my archive and see if I can find some of the IR color I shot in the early 70’s. I worked part time for an aerial research firm and shot tons of 9” IR color. Don’t remember the Kodak number but at the time it was E3 processed. Also shot a lot of 70mm. I always felt the E3 version was better than the later E4 film.

People looked pretty funky on IR color with yellow green lips.

Wow, it's been almost four years, since the last post here. Well, anyway, I was testing-out Rollei Infrared B&W film with a 695nm filter. So far, I think EI 25 works best, at least for me. This mage is with a Nikon F100, with 50 F/1.8 lens, and a B+W 695nm filter.
