On May 12, 2018 I debuted what I feel is a one of a kind book containing limited edition fine art prints.

My book is titled Survivors I and it is the story of my journey in 2007 in Yosemite National Park. I found that I was drawn to the Black Oaks and their struggle to survive in the valley. I started west of Camp 4 on the Rim or Northside Trail and worked the entire day all the way to the Mirror Lake cutoff. I exposed twelve sheets of 8x10 film and eight of the prints are in the first edition of a series which I hope to have a total of three volumes.

I've done everything in this book. The prints are bound in original carbon transfer prints. The text is also printed in carbon transfer! A first of its kind I believe. It is a very difficult task to clear pigment from small letters but I succeeded and the edition looks great. The text is printed on fine art watercolor paper as are the printed images. This was the only way I could see this project being presented. It took me eleven years to make this dream come true. The book is housed in a custom clamshell case and includes a portfolio of two original signed carbon prints suitable for framing along with the book. A collectors edition for sure.

The book along with 29 carbon prints is on display at LightBox Gallery in Astoria Oregon and if you are in the area you should check it out.

I'll post some images from the opening and I hope to have video's of my talk and the book presentation up soon.

Thanks.

Roger, thanks. Yes the project is very personal and that is the reason I could only do my book this way. It is truly a collectible and I'm making six bound copies.

Merg, thanks a lot. I knew when I started documenting the oaks that I'd have to do a book about my feelings toward them. I could never find a print copy that could match my carbon prints so with a lot of research and hard work I learned many new skills. I became a book binder and did everything myself. The printing of the text proved to be quite challenging. Each letter had to be cleared with an artists brush. Something that requires patience beyond what most people have. One day I hope you get to see it and thank you.

Wonderful project idea! I love oaks. The past couple of weeks I've had to spend most of each day at UC Davis awaiting treatment of a pet at the Vet facility,
which is the best in the world. The arboretum has over a hundred varieties of oaks from all over the world, and the nearby creek still has some very big old
native water oaks. The cork oaks from Spain have esp interesting bark patterns. Carbon is a wonderful media for exhibiting bark texture etc.

Yes, I'm proud of the accomplishment. I'm still in disbelief really that I was able to do this. I learned many new skills which will be great for other projects I have in mind.

Vaughn, we spend a few days together in Yosemite over the years but none more important than the day we spent on the steps of the Ansel Adams Gallery where I saw my first carbon print and was hooked. Thank you so much for that day.

Also, a favorite part of my book is the acknowledgement page.

Congratulations Jim this is a major accomplishment! As a carbon printer I can appreciate how difficult this project must have been. I hope I get a chance to see one of these books in person one day.

Best,
Jason

Jim,
Your book is an one-of-a-kind treasure. When I look at the book, I appreciate not only the beautiful images but the craftmanship and your superb attention to details. You put your heart into it and it shows. It is not only an art book but an autobiography of your love of photography. Well done! You should be proud.
