Hi all

In my search for a 717 camera I've started looking at new ones as well, and have found a few camera makers I wasn't aware of, like Filip Habart, Stenopeika and VDS. I'm curious first what people's experience has been with these makers, how their cameras compare to the next tier up in price like Chamonix, and who else is out there making cameras? Also, are they all making holders to the same standard or is it still a free for all? Thanks

Gabriel

Keith Canham (http://www.canhamcameras.com) and Richard Ritter (http://www.lg4mat.net) are two others.

I purchased several ULF film holders from Filip. His workmanship is first rate and the pricing reasonable. I'd purchase from him again.

Most older backs can be modified to take any holder. 14x17 has an ANSI standard; I never had any problems using Fidelity holders (medical or otherwise). When using wood holders, its been my experience in ULF it is usually better to buy the holders and have the camera back matched to them. Of course, if the builder also makes holders, like Richard Ritter, the issue is solved.

Good luck.

Who's Making Ulf cameras today?

In the wet plate world where there are no standard backs, I think many of us have taken to making our own...

My true preference is a Korona because of weight, ease of use and availability of holders. I sold my last one a little over a year ago when I located a 5x12 Korona. At 89 i need to save all the weight I can.If I was going to buy a new one, I would go for the Chamonix. Solid camera and excellent holders good price. I have handled it as well as a couple of the others, and there isn't a comparison..
