Since no one else has started this month's portrait thread yet, I'll toss one out. A friend's wife needed a portrait for a poetry project. I think she knows something, but she's not telling. Typical poet...

Excellent portrait Mark.
Wow, awesome stuff Mark and John!
I shoot portraits in my spare time. Some of my clients request b&w prints from my old lenses. Here's a pair taken with my Chamonix 045n, c.1922 150mm Heliar, FP4+.

Wow, outstanding tintype Mark! I have never handled a tintype, only seen scans. As I understand it, it's like a thin negative or Daguerreotype in that the reflection from the more silvered areas appears lighter. Do you have to do anything special to scan them?

This is the first image this camera and lens has made in at least 70 years - has been sitting in my grandfather's attic since the 50s, though nobody in the family can remember seeing it ever used, so possibly much longer. From what I've researched, Lens is circa 1890.

Thank you! Like Daguerreotypes, tintypes should be seen in person, as they look very different from conventional prints. Daguerreotypes look like a positive image printed on a mirrored surface, and getting the right reflective angle an background are important. Tintypes and Ambrotypes are positives with the whites printed over a black background. Easier but different to look at than Daguerreotypes, but of course, you have to see both in person to truly understand. Tintypes scan beautifully at the normal reflective settings!

From a series of portraits I've been shooting the last couple of weeks of teachers at the school where I teach on Whidbey Island. The school first opened fifty years ago this month. I've spearheaded a little project of making a time capsule that will be opened in another fifty years. Every kid in the school wrote him or herself a letter that we'll put into the time capsule. The portraits are also going in, along with several artifacts. The time capsule is a 2 cubic-foot fire safe that we'll store in the electrical control room in the school. They're going to mount a plaque in the main hall.

Cool, a time capsule!
50 years made by kids, they may even see it open.
My building had a 100-year plan for continuity. It will never make it, the building is unsound.
I tried to get interest in a 100-year time capsule. I was even going to pay for it all and bury inside my unit under concrete.
Nobody out of 40 resident artists could even discuss it...

Yes, it's an elementary school, so the kids will be between 55-60 in 2068. I'm going to keep eating my vegetables and hope that I'll be the fellow who opens the time capsule at age 92. :)

First attempt at a portrait image of mom and son. Shot on Provia 100F, 210mm lens at f/11. Scanned in using Better Scanning holder, wet mounted. No processing yet in PS, etc except to remove dust. I think I just missed focus/tilt as son's face is slightly out, while mom's is in. 3600dpi scan on Epson V850.

Hi deardorfuser, if those plants are giant hog weed please be very careful, as the wiki link says, they are toxic. It's a notified weed in the U.K. - legally you must control it due to its hazardous nature. I used to be in weed control and know to my cost what the burns are like even with PPE.
Excellent shots however!:)

Guess I'm not the only one who thought 'Eeeee, giant hogweed!', nasty stuff indeed. Hopefully if the stuff's as dead and dried as that looks, the model will be OK, but stay well clear if it's fresh and green.

The background is disturbing, but suitably muted;
the subject is superb in tone, lighting and stance.
I would have framed it as portrait, but that's just me,
I probably could not have done anywhere near as well as this picture.
I envy your skill.

I've had film in the tank for a few months waiting to be precessed. This is a digitally fixed version of the mess over on "images of mistakes" (http://www.largeformatphotography.info/forum/showthread.php?58849-Images-of-mistakes-good-or-bad/page83)
Graflex RB 4x5 fitted with a Heliar 210mm I think. Tmax developed with some old HC-110.

Remember when having this sort of problem meant trashing the negative? A screw up this big means nothing nowadays!

First image share...
This is the first image this camera and lens has made in at least 70 years - has been sitting in my grandfather's attic since the 50s, though nobody in the family can remember seeing it ever used, so possibly much longer. From what I've researched, Lens is circa 1890.
