View Full Version : Alphax Shutter: suitable for mounting a barrel lens with ULF coverage?

I have a Alphax "Synchro" shutter that I am not now using. It has a rear thread diameter of ~3 inches aqnd the front is just about as large (haven't measured it).

Is there a barrel lens that could be adapted to this shutter?

Shutter has B, T up to 1/50th speeds and bi-pole synch (M-synch I think).

I hope you're not thinking of pulling that 15" tele out of its shutter! I use mine a lot, but mostly as a 9" soft focus lens by removing the rear component. It's a very good lens, too underappreciated.

Hmm. Sounds like an Alphax #5. Unless its a really badly measured Alphax #4. See https://sizes.com/tools/shutter_photo.htm, which is in the list. Always check the list before asking.

Michael, Wolly's 15"/5.6 tele is in Alphax #4. See http://www.cameraeccentric.com/html/info/wollensak_5.html I think, could be mistaken, that Drew has a #5.

Drew, if y'r orphan shutter is indeed an Alphax #5, <sarcasm> good luck finding a lens in barrel whose cells will go directly into it</sarcasm>. But it is a prime candidate for front-mounting a process lens. Two options. The first is a cup-shaped adapter with large female end to accept the lens and small (relatively) male end that screws into the shutter. May not be practical with a lens in a fat barrel that limits access to the shutter speed ring. The other option is a sleeve that fits over the front of the lens' barrel and accepts the shutter. Neither will be very inexpensive.

Thanks guys; good info . . . all of it.

I am actually trying to sell my 15" Wollensak 5.6 telephoto.

I have offered it fully described in the FS forum several times over the last two yars with little interest. The OP to this thread was placed in the ULF forum this morning to see if tyhere was any interest in the shutter alone. I would much rather sell it as a complete lens though.

I have used it a time or two on my little Wista-made Zone VI 4x5, but it is really too stout for that light weight camera.

If nobody wants it just now, it will go back into its PhotoBackpacker box on the3 top shelf of the closet again.

- Excellent studio/portrait lens for 5x7" and i've used it even in 6x17cm for color/b&w landscape work... But I agree, a handful on most 4x5s. Mine is in an alphax #4, so would your's be.
- Advertise it as a 5x7" lens, not a 4x5".
