Last year. Trying to emulate Karsh.

The sitter didn't understand my insistence on hands...

Perhaps he understands now, after seeing the results. Nicely done!

(Although I'm trying to figure out how he's wearing a black jacket on the left and a plaid jacket on the right...)

Use some hot lights and then get some red coccine out dude
Immediately I thought of a period piece , you are well on your way

BTW I hated all the Karsh images when he played with the hands.

Yes, I know. Bad lighting.

I considered going in with photoshop and fixing that, but I like my print as is, warts and all.

I seek effect more than perfection in most things.

Thanks for the compliment!

What's the problem with that.I have a suit just like it. If you think the jacket is cool, you should see the trousers!

Randy, you did great job with the Carmine portrait. The two toned jacket didn't catch eyes but I could have sworn I heard him say, "Ferris, Ferris Bueller...." As said earlier it is a great period piece.

Maybe we'll go for a flash-lit version later today. This was natural light, about 4 seconds. That's a lot to keep still and in focus.

This is with flash, but I missed the focus on her eyes. It's also a bit fogged; I have a very tiny silver bath (<150ml) and I suspect the pH varies quite wildly, so fog is a bit of a recurring issue. I think this plate will print ok though.

Yes there is an artificial light on the right.

Another contribution from my side:

Poe boy collodion, 11x9cm glass, Schneider Xenar 135/4.7 wide open, scanned as transparency. It's going to be an ambrotype, and the tonality of the reflected image is smoother than the contrasty rendition of the negative. I like how the same plate yields two totally different images.

I really like these. The girl's shirt nicely mimics the wood pattern. I'm seeing some development issue on the top left though? And lines running down? The following two are nicely composed but the background trash cans kind of take me out of the photo...

IMO the earlier ones with the tilted plane of focus are kind of distracting. I think usage of that technique is fine in a limited fashion, but it seems overdone here and previously. Just my 2c.

Im not entirely sure whats up with the top left corners but Im sure its something with the development like you said. As for the lines running down, the negatives are in plastic sleeves and that's where the two sides meet to close. Im having some real scans done on a couple of them which should be done next week I believe. Heres an example of the plastic sleeve:

https://farm1.staticflickr.com/796/40800444672_3f31da5de9.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/25aoWJC)

Im a bit disappointed in the trash cans as well BUT with this just being a quick test of the lens, Im not overly concerned about it. Even if the cans had not been there, I doubt I would have used either of those for anything.

I enjoy the tilt :)

Martin

Thank you. I was ecstatic about it at first because it was the first plate I shot basically without any problems and a good look to it. The more I looked at it, the more I'm annoyed that I had the fill light turned up too high and, because she's perfectly flat lit now, it widens and flattens her face. I'm still pretty happy with it overall and I'm just picking nits.

Apropos of nothing at all - that image reminds me of the way my grandfather - nearly sixty years ago - used to make his black and white TV 'colour' using a coloured cel blue at the top and green at the bottom :)

I'm still very new to portraits, but am looking forward to doing more, especially with the 8x10. The priest at our church graciously agreed to let me practice on him. Happily enough, he has had enough photos taken of him that he is quite a natural at posing, and wasn't self-conscious at all. The idea was to show him in the context of the fantastic architecture of our church. I did a couple of views, and this seemed to have the best combination of his personality and the church interior. For an early effort, I'm not displeased.

On the photo of the negative you quoted me on, yes that’s from heavy tilt. However on the prior photos posted, there are some dark swirls that look chemical on the top left corners. I checked the negatives and the marks are NOT on the negatives themselves. Turns out they are newton rings from the negative being photographed in the plastic sleeves on the light table. :)

I wonder if the reference to Renaissance and Medieval Madonna/Virgin Mary paintings, both in facial type and pose (that particularly odd head tilt) is intentional or accidental. Regardless, I wish I'd had the idea.

What a wonderful run of portraits: bgh, Vance, Howard, Eduardo -- I love all these. Z84: The choice of the 150 for the head and shoulders portrait works beautifully with the model's angular beauty and contributes to the medieval Madonna look. Really love that one.

Thanks, yes, i agree, hands are super important, but its easy to ruin the pics if hands are not natural.

Ah, Narcoossee was my first reenactment when I was 11 years old, before I ever became interested in photography. I missed some LF opportunities in my early twenties because I was chasing girls.

Lovely Portrait!
Love the quiet tender moment, the eye contact & the ethereal tension the pose provides.
Also the softness of the image mirrors the tenderness portrayed.
May I ask how you lit the subject.
I love the quality of the light.

Thank You

Serge

It was the 25th Narcoossee Mill Civil War Re-enactment this year, which was very nice!
