I have not heard of Xenotars in this focal length.

It could be a Xenar instead (tessar copy).

Longest Xenotar I've heard of is 21cm, but we could all be proven wrong... Do you have any photos Viktor?

I have a 460mm f4.5 aero type Xenotar. Very sharp and has a very high contrast. Covers 11x14.

Hugo, have you ever counted reflections in the monster?

Dan,

No I have not.

Thanks.

Very likely an Aero Xenar (for the 460mm).

Ed,

It has Xenotar written on the barrel. I think it is a prototype lens.

Hugo, post a picture of it. It must be gigantic!

Ed,

The lens is in my storage unit and here is the link:

Yes it is huge lens and maybe I will post a picture of it in a few weeks.

Nice, would be interested to see pics of that. The ebay link doesn't work anymore. I wonder if it's typical 5/4 construction like regular Xenotars.

If you can find the serial number there would be somewhere to start

Here are some pictures and the serial number is 85319.171839171840171841171842

OK, 85319 was a 105/3.5 Xenar made at the start of 1924, however for serial number 8530199 there is a match. It was a batch of 1 with the note "muster" which I think translates to prototype and was made on 4 March 1964. There was another 460/4.5 just listed as Xenotar (serial 8173905) made on 2 July 1963. Couldn't find a 27cm version but I'm working from lists sorted by serial number so it is a bit of a needle in a haystack approach.

Paul,

Thank you so much. I missed a number. The serial number is 8530199.

Asked the wife, she is German. The first thing that came to her mind when asked about "Muster", was sample, after some thoughts she mentioned maybe the direct translation to English would be template, but that was being quite technical.

Template or prototype is good translation for Muster for sure. (i am interested in Luftwaffe & it shows up in the documents very often...)

Amazing lens Hugo!! I am very Photo-Envy! :)

Did you ever use it? What's the size of that lens board?

Misko,

Yes I used it a few years ago with a guillotine style shutter and the pictures have its own signatures due to the lens. I plan to use it more in the future as I have the right shutter box for it now. The lens board is eight inches.

Hugo, thanks for posting that. Very unique! I still wonder if it is the "real" xenotar type (5/4 design) - maybe so. It would be interesting to see what the coverage is, I am guessing it's limited by the front barrel somewhat, but probably still has great coverage anyway. Post some pics taken with it someday if you can.
