Favicon (short for Favorites Icon) is a feature that makes it possible to associate a special logo with a web page. The favicon is usually displayed next to the web site address and bookmarks.

This is an invitation to create and submit a Favicon for lfphoto.info. You can post a link to your creation in this thread, or email it to me. In about a month, I'll initiate an informal vote to choose the winner.

The Favicon is a 16x16 image. Here is a tutorial on how to create one:

How about George R. Lawrence's mammoth camera? :-)

Emrehan - The same thought occurred to me. Let me see what I can do with it.

The problem with favicons is that they are small, and square. The Mammoth Camera image is rather horizontal, and contains a fair amount of detail. I have tried to capture the essential portion in square format:

Here is an image of an older LF camera.

As you can see, good icons are an art form. Perhaps the letters L and F as LF would be sufficient, distinct, and descriptive.

Ken,
The first image may be difficult to arrange. The second one looks like an easier job - it's a good one too.

This is what I came up with: http://mysite.verizon.net/brian.c.miller/LFIcon1.jpg

I first tried reducing photos, but that wasn't too successful. So I drew one in Photoshop. I wanted it to be recognizable as a LF camera of some kind, and have some dimension to it.

I don't know Brian, it looks like the head of a Pez dispenser to me.

16x16 is a tough medium, indeed!

Oh, boy, Pez in LF format! Could you imagine trying to down an 11x14 Pez?

It's a tough one. I'm a designer, but when clients ask for a logo, I send them to a friend who specializes (he charges a lot of money, and for good reason ...)

The web site "OS News" has a nice icon, consisting of an O and an S.

You can see it here (http://www.osnews.com/index.php" target="_blank).

Perhaps something similar could be made out of an L and an F ?

here's a try...

of course, it would be scaled down to 16x16...

It is late and I need a mental break...

Here are a couple ideas at http://www.quietworks.com/FRAMES_FILES/LF%20Info%20favicon.html
and just for the heck of it, how about a banner?

Come on, guys! You have to scale it down to 16x16 first, then post it. Everything looks good when its bigger, and then goes to pieces when its made into an icon.

You can easily convert an image to 16x16 using this web site. It's good for experimenting. http://www.chami.com/html-kit/services/favicon/

That's very clever - but perhaps more of an insider's reference, since to others it might look like any number of things: a castle wall, a saw blade, an EEG readout, etc.

Warren's icons are pretty unambiguous, IMHO.

Neat stuff. It is amazing how something can be so small and still be recognizable. The various takes are especially interesting when they highlight the details that differentiate LF from the rest of the world. Maybe not as useful for instant recognition, but kind of like a secret handshake.

If you'll pardon the newbie question...I'm also curious how one posts these favicons without providing a visible link. I looked at the posting help and didn't see mention of it there, and so, posted the link. I feel like a bull in a china shop.

That's definitely less of a Pez dispenser!
