Favicon (short for Favorites Icon) is a feature that makes it possible to associate a special logo with a web page. The favicon is usually displayed next to the web site address and bookmarks.

This is an invitation to create and submit a Favicon for lfphoto.info. You can post a link to your creation in this thread, or email it to me. In about a month, I'll initiate an informal vote to choose the winner.

The Favicon is a 16x16 image. Here is a tutorial on how to create one:

The problem with favicons is that they are small, and square. The Mammoth Camera image is rather horizontal, and contains a fair amount of detail. I have tried to capture the essential portion in square format:

As you can see, good icons are an art form. Perhaps the letters L and F as LF would be sufficient, distinct, and descriptive.

I first tried reducing photos, but that wasn't too successful. So I drew one in Photoshop. I wanted it to be recognizable as a LF camera of some kind, and have some dimension to it.

It's a tough one. I'm a designer, but when clients ask for a logo, I send them to a friend who specializes (he charges a lot of money, and for good reason ...)

The web site "OS News" has a nice icon, consisting of an O and an S.

Come on, guys! You have to scale it down to 16x16 first, then post it. Everything looks good when its bigger, and then goes to pieces when its made into an icon.

That's very clever - but perhaps more of an insider's reference, since to others it might look like any number of things: a castle wall, a saw blade, an EEG readout, etc.

Warren's icons are pretty unambiguous, IMHO.

Neat stuff. It is amazing how something can be so small and still be recognizable. The various takes are especially interesting when they highlight the details that differentiate LF from the rest of the world. Maybe not as useful for instant recognition, but kind of like a secret handshake.

If you'll pardon the newbie question...I'm also curious how one posts these favicons without providing a visible link. I looked at the posting help and didn't see mention of it there, and so, posted the link. I feel like a bull in a china shop.
