Hello all,

Slowly putting together a kit for my (first) 4x5, a Linhof Master Technika Classic.
I've got Gitzo 3-series legs, looking for a pan-tilt head that will suffice for the MT.
Not interested in a gear or ball head, so please hold on your thoughts on those :)

Does anyone have recommendations for field-use pan-tilt heads for the MT that work well with the Series 3 legs?
Ideally, looking for one with a quick release and one that will allow me to swing the back from landscape to portrait without the base/levels obstructing me from doing so while the camera is mounted.

Seriously considering the Gitzo 2272m. Would this suffice?

Thanks!

Look at a Linhof 3-Way Leveling Head. It is ideal for your outfit.

Bob,

Something like this?

How do these heads pan/tilt without the long levers?

Thanks

There are versions of the Arca Swiss D4 which do not have a gear drive (also the clutch on the gear drive versions allows them to used as if they don't have a gear drive)

There appears to be a Sunway clone of the D4 see http://www.ebay.com/itm/162043391502

The Arca Swiss Z2 and previous B2 (neither is currently made) had separate friction and tightening knobs for both axis thus function similar to a 3-way head.

A Chinese company Luland makes a head very similar to the Ries head.

That's the old version and it is very good. The new version is available with an Arca type clamping device built in.

Yes the old 3 way head is very good.
I've got one, but prefer to use a profi II ballhead with quickfix on my technika.

I've been very happy with a Manfrotto geared head:

Bob, I'm not familiar enough with Linhof models, so I'll ask you if this one I've offered for sale earlier is appropriate for OP's needs? All the movements are smooth and lock down tightly. I know that the long handle can be swung out of the way and still be functional. I've removed it in the 2nd pic so the innards can be seen. Note that it has a 1/4" screw.166561166562

The Master Technika (I have one) is not very heavy and doesn't IMHO need anything special/heavy duty. I use it on whatever head I have with me - when I travel I take a medium ball head, when near the car/house I put it on my Ries head or on a video head - they all work just fine. Honestly I like the video tripods/heads because they level below the pan.

Should be.
