what's the schtick on the Nikkor Process lenses?

Specifically the APO Nikkor 480 f9 and APO Nikkor 360 f9?

Are they easy to get mounted in shutters or are they those impossible sizes?

Tim -

Take a look at the page of lens mounting examples shown by SK Grimes:

www.skgrimes.com/fits/index.htm (http://www.skgrimes.com/fits/index.htm)

They've got both the 360 and the 480 listed.

thanks - I always forget that page is there.

Any idea what the coverage is at infinity?

For the 480mm I can't tell you the image circle size, but I can tell you that I've never run out of sharp image using lots of movements on a Calumet C1 (8x10). I can also tell you that the images are bitingly sharp in B&W (I don't shoot any color). I use mine with a Packard Shutter; the combination works wonderfully for me.

The more recent Apo-Nikkors are dialytes, similar to the Apo-Artars and Apo-Ronars.. Nikon rates most of them to cover 46 degrees (longer focal lengths less), which is typically what manufacturers specify for this lens type.

See apo nikkor lens data at http://largeformatphotography.info/lfforum/topic/501375.html and Older ApoNikkor & newer Nikkor M... differences? at http://www.photo.net/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg?msg_id=004O81.

I have an apo nikkor 455 f9 that I had grimes mount in a #3 shutter, and a 360 mm f9 that I had LensN2shutter mount in a #4 alphax.

Haven't tried out the 360 yet, but the 455 is amazing, I think the image circle is a lot bigger than 8x10. I cannot run out of coverage on my Arca at max rise.

Using these in barrel is not that difficult, I have a 600 that i got for fun, and it is fairly easy to use, but I find that the larger the format, the shorter effective focal lengths I use.

Tim,

There is also a 360mm f/9 WA Apo Nikkor, which I have in barrel. It's listed as covering 11x14 on S. K. Grimes page and will fit in a Copal 3, but it is not a direct fit. The filter size is 86mm IIRC, and from the reflections it seems to be a plasmat. Single coated of course.

I have the APO-Nikkor f9 480mm barrel lens which BTW was obtained from dagor77 and it is very nice. It has only seen limited use on my 8x10 Kodak Eastman 2D, but it definitely allows for lots of movement. Here is a pic taken last December with a 4x5 reducing back with outdated Velvia. Hope my attempt to reference this pic works. http://www.photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=3340985
It was my first attempt with this lens.
