Im trying to make a list of existing LF camera manufacturers. I know a lot have closed or close to being done but I think its interesting for new or old customers to keep track of who is still around. I also wanted to list the brands that have recently stopped and the ones that even though they no longer produce cameras still give service for spares or similar.

Also if one can include website it would help a lot.

If this has already been done please excuse me and close the thread.

Thanks in advance.

You have to really check your list before posting. You said that you wanted to make a list of large format camera manufacturers.
Sinar makes bodies for digital. They do not make 45 and larger cameras.
Your Horseman link goes to their 612 roll film camera, not to their monorail 45 cameras.

I didn't check any further, but you should.

Sinar would be a gray zone. Their current gear is largely compatible with film options, fully interchangeable. In other words, a viable option for those primarily seeking an advanced studio digital camera, but easily capable of being converted to 4x5 film. The necessary components are abundant.

That is true of many cameras but I was under the impression that the OP was trying to compile a list of companies that CURRENTLY manufacture large format cameras. To me, that means that a large format camera is shipped new from the factory, and comes out of the box capable of accepting 45 or larger film.
Not which cameras can be made into a large format cameras by buying old parts.
That means that currently Sinar/Leica does not make a 45 or larger format camera.

Hi Nicolas,

Istvan Soltesz of Argentum: http://www.argentumcamera.com/eng/pages/other/home.htm

made my whole plate camera and still makes a range of technical large format and specialist ULF format cameras.

Argentum Cameras have a large user base across Europe.

Kind regards,

As you know, Bob, manufacturers can often supply new parts or components which they might not currently still make, but still have in inventory somewhere, or
which certain dealers themselves might have in new condition for sale. I wasn't necessarily referring to the used market.

This really is a worthwhile effort. Should the list be an updateable sticky?
Wwhat about lens makers—a much shortr list I imagine. Schneider, Rodenstock and who else: Fuji . . . ?

This is the type of thing that View Camera magazine should have been doing for years.

Michael R

Lenses = much shorter list, which is the real problem if you ask me. Analog format LF lenses:

Nikon long gone
Rodenstock gone
Schneider gone
Fuji gone

New update. I will contact each and every company to has a current status of their camera lineup and if they still are producing cameras. It might take a while but think it will be useful to future customers looking for a brand new camera that is still selling cameras and accessories.

Nicholas,

Arca-Swiss is quite independent and never bothered to put up a website (as you have found) !
In spite of that, they use their domain name for email.

The best way to get info on the Arca line is to contact Rod Klukas, US Representative.
I've spoken with him on a number of occasions and he's always been helpful.

Arca-Swiss, Inc
Rod Klukas, US Representative
PO Box 28450
Tempe AZ 85285
Main: 480-755-3364
Mobile: 480-206-4770

Although the company is heavy into technical cameras for digital backs, I believe they still maintain a line of view cameras.

Rod's site above has a link to a complete product catalog - not sure how current, however.

does this list have to be large manufacturers or can it include
someone/people who make and sell on a very small scale ?
if it is the latter, i have made and sold cameras that primarily
expose paper negatives and retina prints ( including paper holders and barrel lenses for the cameras )
for a handful of years. i've made bigger than 11x14 cameras and sold them, as well as smaller ones.
they usually are shipped as a kit, and the parts ( except for the lens ) are assembled by the buyer.

Honestly anyone willing to make and sell a camera is worth mentioning in my opinion. If people dont agree they simply dont need to look at this list. But I do think its relevant. So feel free to include your details for the list.

Hi Nicolas,

Argentum should be near the top alphabetically. I've fixed this part ;)

I'm not sure if anyone else on the forum uses a Silvestri. Since they have had no mention and are still in production, the T30 and S4 [shooting 4" x 5 ") are still listed on their website and Mr Silvestri's company still services produces all the specialist helicoids; film back adapters despite its recent foray into digital:

http://www.silvestricamera.com/eng/prodotti_eng/prodotti_eng.htm

The Silvestri cameras are quite unique in this range - rather like Mike Walker's extruded resin camera bodies - the Silvestri cameras are made of military grade billeted solid plank like aluminium rather than wood with metal fixtures.

http://www.silvestricamera.com/img/prodotti/mod_h_h25/modh.jpg

Wet plate and collodion users are getting some representation on this list too:

The Black Art Woodcraft Cameras (USA) make traditional (after English makers) tailboard plate cameras which can also be adapted for dry plate and film up to 20" x 24":

this is their 8" x 10" Ross field camera (no movements):

http://www.blackartwoodcraft.com/wet-plate-cameras/Cameras/The-Ross-8x10-Field-Camera.aspx

http://www.blackartwoodcraft.com/wet-plate-cameras/Portals/0/images/Ross-8x10-Field-Camera/Ross-8x10-Field-Camera.jpg

Many LF websites are very poor with tiny pictures and haven't been updated in years.

Other's are glossy, yet still deny us enough info to shop.

Yes, I know websites are a PITA but find somebody under 40 to make a better one. Please!

Lots of sales organizations have a disconnect between office personnel who dabble in websites and sales and purchasing people who know what the products
actually are. We just updated our website here, and the format looks nice, but I noticed that we are listed as a dealer for certain product lines that have been out of business over a decade already, while important product lines aren't even mentioned. Lots of alleged web designed just use smaller corporations as a stepping stone, or in cases, that is a deliberate provision for young family members with computer skills getting their foot in the door. In our case, there is a completely different site and data base used for actual pricing, estimating, and current inventory searches, which requires a user fee to weed out the tire-kickers or potential competitors. The standard website is more for general public PR, scheduled seminars and events, timed ads, etc. Photographers have varied, including certain well-known architectural photographers some of us would recognize, right down to examples of someone's high school daughter doing her first
project with a cell phone camera. Call it nepotism if you wish; but lots of our best long-term employees do come from that channel. And I ain't sticking around
much longer!

They are making 200 camera batches but they sell out in less than a day. Im subscribed to the mail list and just got one a few days ago. By the time I check they have sold out. And on their Instagram account they are showing how they make the batches each time.

I have seen two extra batches apart from the crowdfunding. So my guess is they sell a limited amount and work on them. Once finished open another 200.

Richard T Ritter just wrote me to let me know he is still making cameras.

I want to clarify that my list is just an attempt to help large format users (current or future) have a reference of what is made at this day (when the list is finished). By saying its not verified doesn't mean they are out off business, it means I haven´t had the time to write everyone yet. But I will make it my priority to write all the ones listed here to verify before monday. That way I can post the list as of October 2016. And will probably check once a year to update the list. I think this kind of information is crucial to keep things going for all users and makers.

So the list today...

Why not add those companies verified to no longer make analog large format cameras as well? This would save a lot of unnecessary future comments like "how did you leave out xxxxx?"

Sorry Bob, am I missing something in your comment. All the ones on the verified I have seen myself or been told by them that they still make large format analog cameras.

PS: I just wrote all the ones listed.

Not quite, for instance, Sinai is still in business but the current owner, Leica, does not have them manufacture analog large format cameras.

If this has already been done please excuse me and close the thread.

please feel free to add me to your list
i make cameras by hand, one at a time
but they aren't for short exposures.
they are cameras to make long exposed retina prints.
i have made them 2x3 and bigger than 16x20 ( and sold them )
i also make paper holders for cameras as-needed.

retina prints are the original-photographs Nicéphore Niépce,
the inventor of photography, made. they are long exposed images
on photo paper or film or ?

If they're wood, they can be repaired. In this regard, I'm wondering a\bout Wisner, Gandolfi, and Ansco? The Wisner site can be found on wayback.org.

Here is the link to Wista's English language page (https://www.wista.co.jp/e_wista/english.htm). They appear to be active; Adorama, B&H, and Amazon all have cameras in stock. Their dealer list (https://www.wista.co.jp/e_wista/e_dira/e_dhira.htm) is lengthy, but not necessarily up-to-date.

Bob Saloman, is HP Marketing still a distributor?

HP Marketing has been out of business for more then a year and a half. Omega Brandess took over the distribution from us in Feb of last year.

Nikon long gone
Rodenstock gone
Schneider gone
Fuji gone

A similar problem with shutter too, right?

For now, the manufacturers i am interested in from the list and after i checked their 4x5 cameras are:

1. Chamonix, confirmed no doubt
2. VDS, not sure, will check out more later, the language is the issue of this site even after translation
3. Lotus, not sure because the details i am not sure and i didn't hear about this company before, also they didn't list their prices, only by contact which i don't like but have no choice.

Hope i can decide as soon as possible so i can think again about pricing my current gear for sale, I just feel worry about how long the shipping it will take if i order any, sounds i may wait until May or June until i can have a new camera.

The listed URL is actually the website maintained by the US distributor, MAC Group. Checking just now, the MAC Group website is also not loading; perhaps it's a temporary server issue. (EDIT: Or perhaps MAC Group has dissolved, been taken over or otherwise disappeared.)

FWIW, the website of the manufacturer in Japan is here:
