Looks like a beautiful area!

If mountainous landscapes are your cup of tea, it is! I prefer early season - late spring to early summer - when the landscape is still at least partially clothed with snow and the water runs fast, clear, and cold (it also tastes better then).

This may be hard to believe, it might even sound preposterous – and I don’t mean to sound like a crazy, out-of-control wildlife enforcement officer – but if that’s a red-tailed hawk’s feather (or any migratory bird’s feather), and you picked it up and brought it home, you’ve broken the law.

Even had you picked it up, admired it, and promptly set it back down where you found it, you’ve broken the law. Even if you found it in your yard, on your window sill, in the middle of a hiking trail, even if it’s road-kill, or window-kill, you’ve broken the law.

All thanks to the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, in force since 1918.

I know there very specific permits for Native Americans who collect migratory bird feathers for religious purposes, also for game birds in season, taxidermy, and researchers.

The fines are astronomical. Up to $15,000 for a conviction, even $100,000 for eagle feathers.

Now if that’s a non-migratory bird’s feather, or invasive bird’s feather, you’re good to go! :)

I was walking on a friend's ranch in West Texas a few years ago and found a bunch of vulture feathers. I of collected them and took them to his house where he told me I could not keep them. His wife, a Choctaw, said she could keep them and did. I knew about raptors and owls, but not other birds. That said in the early 80s my wife and I found a barn owl dead beside the road and took it home. She is a painter and at that time was painting a series of owls. After calling around to taxidermy folk I found out we could not keep it. We donated it to our local natural history where they preserved it as a teaching pelt.

Amazingly, abandoned bird nests, even egg shell fragments on the ground, fall under this law.

One might ask how the Hell picking-up and taking home, say, a cardinal's stray feather, or a fragment of a robin’s pretty blue egg shell, could possibly harm birds.

The reason is that people who kill birds to collect and/or sell these beautiful things would claim that’s exactly what they’re doing, just innocently finding things on the ground.

We missed Carvers

Never, ever, miss Carver's...;) (If you didn't pass it this trip, the restaurant/orchard is back on Hwy. 321 toward Newport...I always try to stop by this time of year and get a bushel of Pippin's to load into my dehydrator.)

At any rate, I think photography in the GSMNP is mostly of matter of lucking into good light and a finding a gap in the rhododendron. If I had to make a suggestion, it would be to commit to camping in one of the "front country" campsites (e.g. Smokemont, Deep Creek, or Elkmont over here on the Tennessee side) for a few days--you really need a little "loiter time" to scout and to get a feel for how the light progresses over the course of a day.

Look forward to seeing how the Rock Creek shot turned out...

Excellent, good to see the finished work.:) For myself, these creek scenes are hard to visualize in B&W--moss and rhododendron leaves seem to want to go a little too dark for my tastes. Just before it was discontinued I was trying to get a feel for Acros used with a #13 B+W Green filter:

We, I got chewed out this past Spring by some trail passer-by when, beside my tripod, I pointed out how happy I was to see such a variety of hawks that day. He was interested in how I knew so much about them, and in the ensuing conversation I told him I had raised certain kinds as pets when I was young. That triggered a really nasty retort that I had broken the law (one not written yet!). Heck, every kid in the country raised local critters as pets, and even brought them to school on Show n Tell days. Our neighbor Sheriff kept a pet red tailed hawk named Henry. You needed a really thick jacket on when you called him down from the air to your arm with a whistle.

It amazes me how "correct" people can be who don't know enough to understand what they are discussing. Looks like any moment now the lost feather police will come with a battering ram and knock my door down, and drag me off to a concentration camp. I Can't imagine the condemnation my potential serial killer kittens will face. A crow recently lost a feather next to my backyard reading chair; should I call the Avian Lost and Found Hotline and have somebody in a nitrile-gloved wing come and legally pick it up? I even printed a dead tern print last week. Is is sellable without an attached formal release stating that all the bird's respective religious rites were first performed? Sacrilege?

Windows, Tin Can? Yep. We had to double glaze them - two sheets. Song birds would fly into them and fall back to the ground unconscious. If any of us saw that, we'd rush out there and try to revive it before the cats spotted it. That generally worked, and then they'd fly off again out of your hand. But woodpeckers were something else entirely. Their heads are amazing shock absorbers; and their bills are like jackhammer points. They fly into a window pane and it breaks, and they just sit there asking, What the heck was that?, and instantly fly off on their own.

Went solo backpacking for a couple nights up Redwood Creek. I saw that we were going to have some rain and wanted to be out there for the first rain of the season (about an inch -- warm weather returning).

Took the 5x7. Re-weighed all the camera gear I was taking...a mistake. About 28 pounds. We'll see if I have the energy tonight to develop the film. I took 9 loaded holders, but brought back 4 not exposed. I had all day Friday to photograph -- but it was clear and it was breezy at times. I knew photographing might be iffy on Saturday with the rain...and it kept up until noon. In the afternoon, photographing under the redwoods was out -- it was still raining in there. One hikes along and/or in the creek.

The drought and the extra weight of the water in the trees brought down limbs and some dead trees. Listening to branches dropping a hundred feet or two is interesting. I had a 2 foot diameter dead tanoak fall into the creek about 30 yards in front of me -- I was warned by an earlier 'crack!' and seeing tree tops swaying in front of me, so I approached carefully.

It looks like Thomas is hunting for the same thing locally as me this time of year - buckeyes. The recent heavy rains have knocked most of the rust-colored leaves off them somewhat earlier than normal. But I bagged a few 4X5 color negs first. I have Acros in my own P67 right now. It has a wonderful delicacy. But I prefer TMX100 for higher contrast situations.

I took a few one-week hikes up in the Glacier Peak Wilderness back in the early 70s. Beautiful country -- always surprised to run out of trees and onto glaciers at such low elevations!

Yes, the tree zone ends at a low altitude around here compared to other places (around 5000ft/1500m typically I think). I once climbed Humphreys Peak in Flagstaff, AZ at around 12500ft/3800m. And its tree zone ended near the top, IIRC.

I remember starting out in the deep Red fir forests and hiking slowly up and then over a pass in the fog above the treeline at around 4000 feet (White Pass, I think).

The wilderness in northern CA I worked in barely got high enough for much of a timberline. One of its higher peaks just off to the right...the tallest in the wilderness being straight ahead in the distance (Black Rock Mtn and North Yolla Bolly Peak). The Trinity Alps are over North Yolla Bolly's shoulder, and snow-covered Mount Shasta is off in the distance.

I shot these petroglyphs on a field trip about 12 years ago. At the time I thought that infrared film would be the best choice for the project. Finding them was a real bitch and it took 3 of us 2 days and a lot of boulder hopping to find Sky Rock! This is a good recent video that discusses this petroglyph and Sky Rock as well as others: https://video.search.yahoo.com/search/video?fr=mcafee&ei=UTF-8&p=volcanis+tablelands%2C+california%5C&type=E211US0G0#id=2&vid=2ed6d75f8fc13b7640bfce6289ec2d36&action=view

I came upon this one near Sky Rock. It is weathered and incised near to the ground on a low boulder that had no other petroglyphs on it.

The thing about hiking in NH...is that there are relatively few switchbacks - so it is not uncommon to gain over (sometimes way over) 1000 feet in elevation per mile. So yeah...now that I'm getting close to pushing 70, some of those "lesser" peaks are starting to look pretty good!

David, yes it was an amazing day! Early sept. a few years back - high 50's f and sunny...perfect! Came up over Caps Ridge from the west, climbed Adams then down to Madison Hut (where we would spend the night) where we left our gear, and up to Madison's summit. Were blown off of those peaks a few years previous by lightning and hail - so it was good to get back in great weather!

At any rate...later on that very day, during the early evening after supper - I took this photo (Fuji/Voigtlander 667W) looking up at Madison over Star Lake:

This print has been displayed since the early ninties. It was exhilarating and exhausting but glorious evening at GSDNP. 4x5 Sinar Norma 90mm Norma barrel Super Angulon YG filter HP5 PMK+ 16x20 Ektalure developed in Ektonol Omega DII 180 black Rodagon. I dry mounted the print at the local library. I shot and processed one plate in PMK+, also shot a dupe which got souped in D76 1:1 8x10 Unicolor Unidrum on Uniroller. Poor Man's JOBO. BTW the "+" in PMK+ is a flat toothpick-sized collection of AMIDOL. Added about 1/3 stop of shadow speed, sometimes it helped.

You can resolve every grain of sand in this print when viewed up close.

After giving a four-day process-orientated workshop in Yosemite Valley and taking my time packing up the van full of various plastic tubs of tools, contact printing frames, Expert drums, gelatin, and so on and so on, I pointed the van towards the 120 exit with a planned stop at the bridges over Cascade and Tamarack Creeks. The film is yet to be developed, but this is the camera set-up for what might be too busy of a scene. But once going through the effort to set up, I was committed to burn some film!

Not a relaxing situation with the water on three sides of me all leading over the edge of Cascade Falls directly ahead. The second image is about what the 5x7/180mm lens saw, but the B&W film was exposed at 1/15th and at 1/8 of a second. I'll get to the film this week! If the image doesn't work, I still had a good time trying. After this image I went up Tamarack Creek just a little ways where I could nap while the light changed on my next set-up. Much more relaxing!

And one more image for fun. Cascade Falls from Turtleback Dome. Tamarack Creek comes in from the left, just before the Falls.

In the photo with my 5x7 in it -- Turtleback Dome is the bald bit of granite up on the far right, just below the horizon.
