View Full Version : Does anyone know who still makes densitometer cal targets?

I have an X-Rite 810. The calibration target that came with it is now so faded it doesn't return a good calibration. I called X-Rite to try to buy a new one and they basically refused to answer any questions because the 810 is unsupported. They couldn't even tell me if the currently available cal target for the current densitometers had a step around 3-ish density with reference values for VRGB. I called Stouffer, who does make a cal target with a step around 3-ish density, but they only have V reference values and can't provide the RGB values. Is there anyone else in the market who makes transmission densitometer calibration targets?

Believe me, somebody at X-Rite knows. They just don't want to get yelled at if you have problems with an older machine itself. You can also try graphics arts houses or longstanding prepress suppliers, since these kinds of outfits often have leftovers from previous eras.

I'd start with Stouffers: http://www.stouffer.net/TransPage.htm

I still use the McBeth transmission step wedge I bought some 25 years ago. It cost $150 back then, which was real money! I keep it in the dark and am very careful with it. Nothing magical about it, though. Today I'd get one of the Calibrated Stouffer ones and calibrate around a density of 3.0. L

As I said in the original post, I've already talked to Stouffer and they provide visual channel only, not VRGB.

With caring and respect, you will never, ever find a instrumental solution to your approach. Hands-on works best because in that work-flow you will experience the very many inevitable variables in practice that the abstractions ignore.

Very best of luck.

I have an X-Rite 810. The calibration target

Why do you not use an IT8 target ?

Each individual target has errors, but from the serial number (or the barcode) you can download a file from the manufacturer that specifies the actual color density for each cell, that was measured when that individual target was manufactured.

I don't know if it can be good for you, just an idea.

. . . They couldn't even tell me if the currently available cal target for the current densitometers had a step around 3-ish density with reference values for VRGB. . . .

As a thought, find the model id for the densitometer they currently sell that corresponds to the 810 and ask questions about that particular test target. Ask to be transferred to the support people that understand the current model densitometer, so that you can get knowledgeable responses.

This is what I dislike so much about X-Rite. Unlike Gretag that they purchased years ago, X-Rite regularly "discontinues" models, and then refuses to provide information about those models. (Gee, I wonder why? ;))

It was a sad day, when Gretag and X-Rite merged.

Maybe a call to Sam Coniglio would be fruitful. http://www.samconiglio.com/
