What tool would you recomend for slackening the 'flat nut with two holes in it' and where could I get one.

I had good luck with a lens wrench (the one with the pointed ends obviously)

I use a Q & D trick when I either have to remove lens-holder rings or removing the type of locking-bolts you describe (they are called "pig-nose" type bolts in Norway..) . I simply use the pointed (for inside-measurements) guides of my Vernier caliper: I use an old & ugly caliper for this purpose, so this abuse dosn't matter. The vernier caliper is made of hard stainless steel, so until now it have performed remarkably. Still havn't bought any other tool to upen up those odd locking-rings, and the caliper does everything up to 140mm width.
