For years and years have shot IR with film. Made all the mistakes one could make but still had some keeper IR negs. Then several years ago had the opportunity to use an IR converted digital FX camera. Technology makes advances all the time and in this case, for me, was a total game changer. Results were totally equal to shooting IR film but so, so much easier and cheaper. Opted for purchasing an IR filter for my camera instead of a much more costly IR conversion to my FX camera. Never looked back. And this coming from someone who shoots ULF and prints Pt/Pl hand coated prints. Just my 2 cents. BTW: If you are shooting IR film, I totally admire your commitment to the process.

I only tried one roll of MF IR, Rollei IR400 back in 2009. It didn't work out so well, but I got a few good shots. Mostly, I shoot 4x5 Efke Aura now. I've long since sold all my 6x4.5 gear anyway.

Thanks HiHoSilver and jon.oman. Infrared film is fun for those with a high tolerance for failure. But there is no self-blame because you don't exactly know what you are going to get anyway.

Maris - Like others, I admire and enjoy your IR images. As seems to be the case in many of my interests, I'm late to the party. I'd love to give IR a try, but the beloved Efke film is no longer available and I'm not sure there is a suitable alternative. For now, I'll continue to simply enjoy from afar.

Very nice.

I would also like to see some pics shot with currently available film - I'm just starting experimenting with infrared, or I guess near infrared film, since the Efke and Kodak are no longer. The only thing I have used so far is the Rollei Infrared and the Retro 400S and haven't quite got them dialed in yet. I have a roll of the Ilford SFX but haven't shot it as yet.

Lovely image and excellent Wood Effect with SFX and just a #25!
Thanks for the compliment. I was hoping that a #25 red filter could deliver a visible Wood effect and it did. To use an opaque IR filter is simply awful with the 37mm Mamiya fisheye. First the tripod mounted camera is focussed and the scene is framed. Then the lens is de-mounted, the clear filter is screwed off the rear element of the lens, a opaque IR filter is screwed on, the lens is re-mounted on the camera body, the exposure made, the lens is de-mounted again, IR filter off, clear filter on, lens is re-mounted, and off I go looking for the next picture. All this needs ideally three hands especially when standing knee deep in a jungle swamp.

Thank you!
"I think they were $75 for a pair - crazy!" -- yup, this stuff got expensive quick, as soon as Kodak discontinued. When they were still producing, before folks thought to shoot with it, they almost couldn't give it away. Now, the options are basically Dean's 120 rolls on an auction site, and FFP's new 35mm cartridges ($28/roll)

" I wish I could find medium format color infrared." Available, but not cheap:
http://www.tarquinius.de/

Ed; "plus about 5-6 more in the freezer" -- I hope you've found what I have: the stuff is a whole lot less fragile than folks think. I've left rolls in the back of sealed cars for days, moved them from freeze to hot and back, and the results are still very good.

"must have been a clear day" -- Right after a summer downpour, so nice a clear throughout the valley!

Thanks all!

Thanks Lesek Vogt. A TLR is good for infrared work: no black viewfinder. The Seagull is rough Rollei copy at 10% of the price and it takes cheap 34mm filters instead of the nicer Rollei bayonet system.

And finally, one near Atlanta but an example of why I hesitated to get more of this film. After carrying some rolls around to various hot and humid locales for about a year (still in-date), the backing paper lefts spots all over the image, ruining most of the last couple rolls I had. I have the same issue with Pan F+, but otherwise I really loved SFX with just an R25 filter. The R72 was too much for me other than for special use-cases. I just don't like totally white vegetation - I'm more interested in the darker skies and pronounced clouds from these films.

I'm not sure. I'll try to hunt down the negative tomorrow. I just finished grading this semester's classes, and I'm a bit muddle-headed. It's possible that it is Ekfa film...but I don't think so.

Gotta find my R72 filter for next month's trip and try it on the Rollei 400 IR either way. If it looked like that I'd be happy.

Cool, Ari! That's an interesting structure.

For my pictures above, I used a GW690II, Rollei Infrared 400, and a R72 filter. I've been bringing my film to a local lab for development, but I know they use D76 and that they went off of Rollei's box recommendations for time (11 minutes I think?). As far as metering, I rated the film at ASA 6 and that worked well. I scanned the negatives using an Epson 4990 flatbed which I can't believe is still going after all these years.

I hope all is well with you.

Ari

Thanks, Austin. And I hope all is well with you.
All your infrared images look great, and not just because of your lab, of course, but it helps that they use the proper developer and time.

As you can see, I'm still in my "moonscape" phase of shooting IR.
And I'm also using a 4990, I think they're un-killable!

Beautiful work young man. I’m thinking of trying some Rollei 400 4x5 sheet film. At ASA 6, what filter factor did you use for the R72 when calculating your exposure?

Thanks, Jeff! I've been considering buying some of the Rollei IR in 4x5 as well. It's got my mind turning.
The rating of ASA 6 is with the R72 filter on, meaning I slapped the filter on, set my Pentax spot meter to ASA 6, and went with its recommendations. When I'm metering, I'm always thinking of zones, so I'll meter the area of shadow where I want to retain detail, or else the brightest highlight where I want to retain detail, or sometimes just an area that I imagine being middle zone V or whatever, and then I'll let the rest fall where it does. Ansel would be disappointed that I don't use development for further control, but "normal" developing usually works fine for I'm doing. Sorry Mr. Adams, I'm a bad student! Anyway, to return to the Rollei IR, basically, with the R72 filter in place, I pretended it was a 6 speed film, and it worked out fine!
