Hi All,

Could anyone advise me as to what lens would work/cover well on the 7X17 format? Also could use a good source for 7x17 film.

Thanks, Steve

I have 305 and 355 G-Clarons. Is there anything in 240 range that covers ?

Do a search here on 7x17 lenses. Plenty of info already posted.

I have the 240mm Graphic Kowa that just barely covers. I'm convinced that the Computars have a superior formula with greater covering power. I have 210mm Computar that does in fact cover th 7x17 film with no fall off. Many report that that particular 210 Computar will cover but one needs to employ Hyper focal distance type focusing, I have not found that with the lens that I have. The 240mm and 305mm Graphic Kowa lens that I have cover just slightly better than the 210mm Computar as an FYI. G Claron have a very large image circle as well.

"Opinions vary."

My Graphic Kowa 240/9 covers 7x17 with room for movement. Just shot 6 sheets with it a couple weeks ago.

There is a lot of interesting reading to do on this topic in the archives. That being said my current lens kit includes:

Cooke Series VIIB 203mm f6.5
Graphic Kowa 240mm f9
Goerz Dagor 12" f6.8
Scheider G Claron 355mm f9
Nikon Nikkor M 450mm f9

If I could only have two, they would be the Nikon 450 and the 12" Dagor.

I had a Nikon 300M a few years back and loved it on my 4x5. I would guess the 450 would be the same look. I am surprised a 12" Dagor would cover.
How about a 14" Wide Field Ektar or a 19" Red Dot Artar?

My GK 240mm has massive coverage. It's the fixed one; doesn't fit a shutter.

My Nikkor 450mm has more sharp coverage than my camera has movements. It covers 12x20".

The Dagor covers with room to spare. A 10" WF Ektar will just cover. 14" Commercial Ektar I don't know. There is a thread titled "7x17 Lens" in the archive. It is very informative.

The Nikkor 450 is my most used lens on the F&S 7x17, but there are only 2 or 3 teeth left on the focusing track when using it. One has to be careful not to rack the front standard right of the rail.

My dream lens kit is as follows:

200mm Grandagon
240mm Graphic Kowa (the one I have is sharper than the Computar I had)
305mm G Claron
355mm G Claron
450mm Nikkor
610mm Apo-Nikkor.

And a quad bike to carry them!

If you're going for ideal, why not replace the 610 APO-Nikkor with a 600 C or even better a 600 A! :)

Because the Nikkor is a better lens.

Well, the discussion is moot, because the F&S 7x17 doesn't have the bellows extension to use a 24" lens. Though there definitely have been some days recently when I wanted 600mm/24" while out shooting with the 7x17.

Top hat?

The camera only has about 18 inches of bellows so the top hat board would have to be long. At that point I would wonder about mechanical vignetting considering the width of the format.

Wow! That's not much bellows at all, I had no idea they would make a camera that big with such short bellows, I agree, definite would have mechanical vignetting. I guess for banquet shooting, it could make sense.
