Here's the first two sheets I scanned, freshly developed this evening and shot Monday afternoon with my new Travelwide. I was on vacation in Mississippi and my GF and I decided to stop and tour the USS Alabama in Mobile for old times' sake.

The first shot here is the screw of the ship, and it shows the strength of the TW I think. This was shot @ f/32 at 1/25, on HP5+ and developed in Acufine - easy enough to handhold on this camera:

Sadly I discovered that sometime in the last month, since using my 90mm Angulon last, the lens has developed massive separation in the front element. Not sure what causes this spontaneously. It had no problems whatsoever last month when I shot several sheets with it. So, as I found out, this causes some issues with regard to flare and patterning in the image when shot stupidly like this:

By the way,for those curious, here is a 100% crop (3000 DPI scan) of the first image. No, it's not as sharp as a tripod-mounted modern optic. Who cares?

Super Angulon 90mm/HP5

I pledged for one of each. I picked up a 90/6.8 Angulon from ~1955 (with an impressively accurate shutter) and a 65/8 Super Angulon from ~1969, both for a reasonable price. I shot four with the 90 last weekend, and two with the 65 this past Wednesday. All were shot with a monopod, but the two with the 65 (both shot at 1/15) show motion blur, so either I start using TMax 400 with these cameras, or lug along a tripod. I like the idea of using them with a monopod, though.

Thank you very much. The photo was on a tripod as the winds were in excess of 30mph (constant). I used a Red Filter.

The following Saltflat, Texas photo was in fact handheld - 1/250th sec. Ilford Delta 100.

nice shots!!! I got mine the other day and today was the first day I got to use it, I stopped by a favorite shooting place of mine to shoot a couple of sheets before it got dark, couldn't wait to try this thing out, very cool camera.

So I have had several outings with my Travelwide now
it is a learning process figuring out what works for you
so far my hand held shots leave a bit to be desired
these two were taken on a tripod
I am using the 90mm Angulon lens
and a 35mm viewfinder from a Russian Kiev 4

both shots were in Toronto
the first from the fourth floor terrace at our condo
the second was a tree in Mount Pleasant cemetery

as you can see I printed cyanotypes

Hello to Everyone, but mostly to the followers of the Travelwide camera by Wanderlust and the thread:"Using and Modifying the Travelwide 4x5 Camera".

Yesterday I posted a reply to a post from Drew Bedo and then I attempted to attache photos that I had recently shot with my TW. I couldn't do it without up loading to this forum first. So hopefully here are a picture of my TW setup and several first try's of rocky shorelines. I am open to all comments and questions.

Ok, I had scanned my negs after processing them and I failed to ask the lab manager to give me JPEG proofs and the scans are in TIFF. I didn't notice that until now and will have to convert the images before I can post them. Sorry once again

Re: my post yesterday at 22:09 directed to readers of the thread, "Using and Modifying the TravelWide 4x5 Camera" These are the photos that I had attempted to upload unsuccessfully because they were large tiff files. I converted an resized them into jpeg files.

They were taken about mid morning, lightly overcast and brisk. Exposures were f16@125. with the small 90mm Linhof angulon lens.
It was windy so I used a tripod which really slowed me down. With a good viewfinder I could probably got the shots handheld.
Again, all comments & questions welcome.

I remember quite vividly the impression of sharpness I had of those demo pictures shot by the founders of wanderlust in that green garden
All the pictures I have seen here, so far, with the exception of one or two (yours wojszyca for example) look a tad soft - some really soft.
None has that LF tack sharp sort of look. I don't wish to be disrespectful and I apologise in advance if my comment hurts some members but I sincerely expected more. Is the lens factor ? Is the scanning factor ? More pictures are needed I guess, where else in the forum are they located ?

Andre or Andrea, it's like this. All the lenses given to be used on these cameras are capable of producing tack sharp images. No LF camera used handheld as these cameras were intended to be used will produce images as sharp as those made from a tripod. The 90mm cameras stand a better chance of producing a sharper image since they can be focused at a distance that includes the primary subject whereas the 65mm cameras are prefocused at some arbitrary distance. In the case of mine, I tried to prefocus at a distance that would give me the best possible use of the hyperfocal range at f/22. This works out to something like 17 feet. Since I'm shooting at f/22 and still want to keep the shutter speed up to a reasonable point, I had to use 400 speed film. The film I had on hand was HP5+ so grain becomes a factor in image sharpness. So if I wanted to consistently produce a tack sharp image I would be using the 90 on a tripod and focusing on the (well a better one) ground glass. In that case, I might as well be using my Linhof which defeats the whole idea of the Travelwide. Now, we have a negative to work with. What you can see here from a small jpeg can be mightily influenced by how the negative is scanned and post processing, especially manipulating contrast and sharpening. You need to see the real thing in person not a little jpeg online to have a real clue.

The typical Angulon lens is soft wide open, while hand-holding 4x5 requires some shutter speed. The tendency will be too open up (and not use filters) to gain shutter speed and that may result in some lack of sharpness. I guess moving forward the TW will find its métier in candid portraits and street scenes, well lit by the sun or a flash, much as one would expect from a Speed Graphic or similar press camera. I will use mine (if it ever arrives) like a speed graphic to shoot political campaigns and demonstrations, and for short business trips with a small tripod for landscape and architecture, using a ground glass for focus.

Well, while I was writing this Chauncey provided a better response from experience. I also forgot to mention zone focus.

The questions is this I reckon: can we have today a real LF look without spending the 15k, 30k (you add the currency you know best) for a digital medium format ? Can we still use - sort of - "rapidly" any of the existing LF analogue solutions?

If you are wanting to get shots like David Burnett's from a travelwide, it just isn't going to happen. What you are seeing isn't necessarily LF signature, but more specifically Aero Ektar and judicial use of tilt/shift. Both things that are opposite the ethos of the travelwide (light and portable).

At least that is my take on it.

I think I understand whay you mean. I am satisfied with the sharpness I get, later when I will be back home I will post a crop from a bigger scan. It took some effort for me to calibrate the sharpness to infinity in the first place, but after I got it right, I am satiffied. I DO NOT expect to get sharpness like from medium format Mamiya lenses or even modern LF lenses from this tiny old Angulon though.
I am sure scanning is the issue too - I just use a simple flatbed Epson, and I suppose that photos of artists and professionals published online are often drum scans, usually resized for the web to small size, so obviously look super sharp. Even film/developer matters - my Provia shots are way sharper compared to the cheap Shanghai GP3 scanned in the same way.

I am really curious to compare my results with the Fujinon 90mm that I have, waiting for another Kickstarter camera to arrive - the Intrepid Camera. That is more "normal" LF camera and the lens should be sharper as well.

Damn Daimocow, those images look great! Tonal qualities are strong and I see very little lens distortion. What was your F/stop? The depth of field is very good too. I have that lens also, except it's branded by Linhoff. I don't think I got that good a depth of field on my recent outing. Maybe I need to go back and reset my infinity focus. Anyway, like to see some more. It could be come a new category - "Street Architecture".

You are right about the Linhof quality. It's all about the quality control and selection process. The lenses were taken off the Schneider production line in the final stages and a higher quality control level was applied so the best lenses were selected for the Linhof branding. I do also have a super angulon that I use on my Wista but it's heavy and bulky and not in the TW style. I've been watching a nice Rodenstock 90mm on ebay but at $300 I can't justify it.

Here's a photo from this weekend. Taken @ Lake Lanier in north GA with my Travelwide and 90mm F/6.8 Angulon, Kodak Portra 160VC. I've been kinda neglecting the TW because I was frustrated with the viewfinder. I just couldn't seem to get along with anything I tried. So finally I just stuck my Linhof finder on it (later model). It works really well, though it's top heavy, and the finder cost more than the camera and lens combined...

Nice shot; was it on a tripod or handheld? I've already posted how I cut out the TW focusing screen and put an acrylic GG in the cutout. It was a bit of a pain but works great. Others have taken a film holder and had it modified with a GG at a camera repair shop. See the "Using & Modifying the TW" thread for more info. For TW handheld shooting I found on Ebay a plastic molded viewer that fits into TW coldshoes. They are made by a guy in Israel and aren't the greatest but they work well and are small and light, and less than $25.

Hi Steve, yes it was handheld. I think f/16 @ 1/50th if I remember right. I am waiting for the supposed improved GG from them but don't really need it. Is the eBay viewfinder you have a 4:5 ratio? I have seen those from the guy in Israel but I thought they were all 3:2, and I also read that they were of low quality, but I haven't actually looked through one. The Linhof finder is so perfect though and has correction for focus distance - but just heavy.

Regarding TW OE PP (pebbled plastic) vs GG (ground glass)

I recently made a new TW GG from glass with exact registration that fits like a film holder, very similar to OE. Usable on any 4X5" camera.

I then compared, using USAF Target, my chosen focus set points of 3, 5 and 30 feet using a Raptor 90mm. I was very surprised to find my Ground Glass confirmed all my set points that I found with the TW Pebbled Plastic.

I also find the TW supplied wire finder to work perfectly for me. I don't like the $20 Israel finder I bought years ago. Too hard to see anything.

I have the Israeli one. It's 3:2 and is low quality but certainly usable. I haven't actually shot with my TW yet but figure to just allow for loose framing anyway until I get a better idea of where the real image edges are in it

First ever Travelwide photo. First ever 4x5 photo.
Had some old Polaroid 559 4x5 in my fridge that I put into a Polaroid 550 back and zip tied to my Travelwide, ha!
I didnt have a loupe to get the best focus calibration but I really just wanted to see if the 550 back would fit and if the 559 would develop. They both did. Just had to remove the tension springs on the Travelwide.
I have more confidence now I can work with this set up in Polaroid.
I am looking into the 405 back next.

The Schneider Super-Angulon 1:8/65 is what was recommended, I think. Anyway, it's what I put on the camera. Works great, although there is a tiny bit of vignetting in the corners. No helical, but that's not a problem. The lens focuses from about 5 ft to infinity. One issue with the lens is that it only opens to f/8. That does not allow enough light in to see an image on the plastic "ground glass." I put a viewfinder on the camera and that solves the problem. With the right film, it really is a point and shoot LF.

I'm moving back to the US at the end of June and have already shipped all my other cameras and darkroom equipment, except the Travelwide, which arrived as I was packing the container. I decided to keep just it so I could have a good chance to test drive it, without distraction. I've now shot it several times, and finally got the chance to develop some film (in a borrowed darkroom) over the weekend. These images are not scanned, just shot with a cell phone while lying on a light table, and then inverted.

Here is a temple shot from Ayuttya. As I recall this was on a tripod, focused on a ground glass:

Not sure where I introduced that weird purple cast. Anyway, I also decided to experiment with a front-mounted 2x teleconverter, and bought a cheap one off ebay for about 12 bucks. The first shot shows that it works, but has severe mechanical vignetting. This was zone focused and handheld at about ten meters. The second one was shot in a hotel bathroom as close as I could focus at 1/4 second, and has a little more coverage. Unless you like this look, the teleconverter might be most useful with a roll film holder.

Hello. it's been a while since I last visited the forum, glad to be back. Please have a look at some of my more recent Travelwide shots, hope you like them.

These first two are shot on a very expired Velvia 50 in 9x12cm format, which made scanning them quite a challenge for me, as I don't have a 9x12cm holder for my Epson 4990. I used a piece of ANR glass, taped the slides to it and put it on the glass using about 1mm spacers, I think the result is really decent and I have the frame borders:

Looking at the design of the boat, I think it is a river-barge -- not a good idea to go to sea with it at all, at least when loaded up! One occasionally sees these vessels having almost no freeboard, when they are carrying bulk-products travelling on the river here.

It still is on PP for the colors, but almost done.
The picture was taken in mid afternoon this summer in st Ives, so yes, lots of light and saturated colors...
I made a first large print in order to see how it goes in big, and, yes, it looks quite amazing :cool:
Printing large makes you feel kind of "sucked" into the scene, it is really impressive...

I'm working on portraiture at the moment with a Graflex crown graphic + Symmar 210 and it does look good too (!)...

Thanks to the joys of cancer and chemo, I've not been shooting much LF. Chemo is over (cancer free, by the way) but I still had the infusion port in my chest, which lined up exactly with the straps of my backpack, so I still couldn't take the LF camera out. I decided that was as good a reason as any to take the Travelwide out. The port's gone, thankfully, but I still wanted to use the TW a bit more, so took the 65 and wandered about the Stanford campus last Monday while my wife was taking a singing class. Here's the best of that batch:

P.S. Get screened for colon cancer! Trust me, the cancer and chemo are much, much, much worse than the colonoscopy. While you're at it, get screened for any cancer that your doc thinks is a good idea!
