As I am searching for Jobo 4x5 drums and reels (to fit Jobo CPE2+), forum members gave me a reality check that expert drums will not work and made the suggestion of 2x 2509n reels in a 2551 tank. In looking at this list of tank and processor capacities http://www.jobo-usa.com/images/manuals/tank_and_drum_capacities.pdf , moments ago I learned that CPE2 should not have a chemical payload of more than 600ml. The only two tanks (that I can see) that are within that limit and can handle 2x 2509n reels are two tanks as follows:
1. the suggested 2551 ...
2. and on the resource list I see the 2553.

What is the difference between the 2551 and 2553? It looks like I am going to use reels after all ;) I see "magnet" vs. "cog" in the Jobo PDF -- my CPE2+ is cog -- does that mean I can only use the 2553? My CPE2+ has a cog connection. Is the 2551 made for a magnet-drive connection? Can a 2551 be fitted with a cog lid (I have one, not sure it will fit).

For those who follow:
Jobo capacity PDF: (good info on tank capacities)
Note this important info: http://www.jobo-usa.com/images/manuals/tank_and_drum_capacities.pdf
"2551 or 2553 Tank 12 04044 + 04045 560 ml (19 oz) 2551 magnet, 2553 cog "

Capacity limit for CPE2+:
"The CPE-2 and CPE-2 Plus should not be used with more than 600 ml of
solution. Excess volumes will limit the useful life of the rotation motor"

Finding my way through Jobo for the first time and I have a mint CPE2+ that I found for a song so I will work with what I have. Please help me find the right tank.

I just read this thread: http://www.largeformatphotography.info/forum/showthread.php?95116-Unevenness-with-4x5-in-Jobo-2553

The user had some problems but it seemed unknown if it was processing problems with the 2553 tank or a light leak. He reportedly has used a 2521 tank for years with a single reel with no problems. Are there more problems with two reels and 12 sheets of film in a 2553 tank?

IIRC the main difference between the 2551 and the 2553 is in the connection to the processor. The 2551 is fitted with a magnet at the bottom, the 2553 has a lid with a cog. The cog connection is used to fit these tanks on a processor with an arm lift. The cogs can be had seperately and can be used to retrofit the lid that comes with the 2551, so these can be used with the lift as well. Basically both tanks are the same when it comes to volume of chemistry, number of films and possible issues when developing film.

My own CPE2+ doesn't have a lift and comes with the magnet connection, which works pretty well.

The magnets are "snap on" as is the cog lid (by way of a hammer and screwdriver (see KOH/CatLabs video on how to pop them out properly instead of breaking it like I did the first time haha, they are essentially interchangeable. Obviously easier to just buy the right one for your processor.

The 2509n is fine for almost all film except Rollie's IR400 film, which is too thin. But HP5+ should be just fine.

If it's any consolation, I use mine in a JOBO CPE original, not the #2 version... It's really old and I mean REALLY really old, destined for a lot less than 600ml I'm sure, and I use 750ml with the two tanks, and as much as 1L with it and it works just fine. Obviously you shouldn't tax your motor all the time but honestly they are strong and I think you'll be fine.

CPE2 Plus will handle 2 x 2509n no problem, Jobo says to use 570mL with this in a 2551/53 tank. BE VERY CAREFUL about using diluted developers, I love XTOL 1:1 but with this low of volume I use XTOL stock! How to load the reels with no fear

I have the LED light sources covered because I have an IR led floodlight in my darkroom. These are a toy Jakks Pacific SpyNet night vision goggles. One set of LEDS are VISIBLE, first thing to do is cover with black electrical tape so as to not accidentally activate, I put the duct tape on the IR LEDS because its so bright it blinds you. The emulsion side of film is bright white by IR, I still have problems with my glasses fogging up inside the rubber mask, so I keep it cool when loading reels. MAKES IT SO YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY SURE REELS ARE RIGHT BEFORE PROCEEDING. I may look crazy, but until I had my wife shoot this picture I have never been out of the darkroom with these on.

Is this cheating, Hell no. I use eyeglasses to drive how is this any different!

Allow me to suggest to find a 2521/2523 to get familiar with the processor. Then you can think of a bigger tank.

Thanks for the pic. What a great way to check reel loading. I am going to try this once I get my tank and reel. Many thanks for taking the time to share a pic and I bet you have helped many people!

ps: You look like JOBO special forces.

Now realizing that I cannot use Expert tanks, I unpacked my CPE2+ that I purchased locally from CL. I had originally dismissed the tank that came with it. Now that I face using the 2509n reel(s), I am taking a second look at this -- and DuoLab123 kindly read my original post stating that I had this tank and suggested that might be able to simple add a reel or two!

You can't develop 4x5 in the 1500 series tanks, but the center core will work with the 2500 series tanks, also the film funnel will work with a 2800 lid. Find a tank, lid and reel and you in business.

For roll film the tank you have is perfect. The small tank will develop 2 rolls of 120 or 2 rolls of 35 mm. Add the extension and you can run 6 120 or 5 35 mm.

Thanks Duolab, I am re-reading this and now I understand!
Wishing you great light!
