its the technique developed and perfected by William Mortensen to work out tonality quirks in photographs, similar to what dodge&burn is, but performed differently , using etching and abrasion.

I've often wondered how much further photography would have come by now if Adams hadn't tried to crush Mortenson's career and following. But, I find the irony of the fact that tools like Photoshop and Painter have revived the spirit of Pictoralism to heights unimaginable when the feud was going on.

Thank you all for the kind words. Our kids are very restless - Katka as a girl is generally calmer, but our almost 7 y.o. boy is impossible to get and keep in front of a camera long enough. So I was just happy that I managed to get the eyes in focus and trip the shutter when she was not blinking. I did not have the time to think about reflections, Sergei... I'm especially happy it came out so well even with the glasses on...

You are right about the distortion, especially over the shoulder. I guess that the shirt was too white for the coating of the AE!
I must confess that I love the swirly bokeh!! I'm just an amateur beginner amazed with this kind of aberrations ;-)
I've purchased a Symmar-S 210/5.6 to learn to shoot portraits without "artifacts"!

With lens choice it's a lot about what you like. We all have different tastes. One of the things that is really nice about large format is all the lens choices you have. You are not stuck with one brand of lenses like some cameras.

I liked your photograph by the way, subject wise and composition wise. Like Bob I just didn't like how the AeroEktar rendered the bokeh.

Brian, I think it's natural - at 10 she's a little too young to wear lipstick IMO, but what do I know... I have used a filter (i think it was yellow #12 or #8), it might have emphasized the lips relative to the skin.

Yes, thoroughly. But I use that camera only for portraits at home. For hauling around I have everything setup and prepared with my Chamonix 5x8.Another reason is film availability and "film-consuming", I shoot much fewer sheets for portraits and many more when being out in the country - I choose 13x18cm/5x7 (and also 5x8 to some degree) because the film is much cheaper, much easier to obtain, I have more holders. But each developed sheet of whole plate brings me more joy, the image on the groundglass is larger and better ... but that would be true for 8x10... 10x12... :)

I tried 11x14 and it brought me no joy, everything became hard work and I couldn't be productive. 5x7 and whole plate are the sweet spot for me.

A friendly artist neighbour in his garden a couple of weeks ago. Grumpy look per request.

Approx. 5x7 crop of 8x10 Ektascan in 2D. Have yet to scan others (him not grumpy and other subjects).
For ref. Rodinal 1:118 (11ml/1.3l for 4 sheet in a chromega drum), 16 RPM Premier base (much slower than Beseler); inversion of rotation by turning drum around after 3 minutes, 3 minutes. Water rinse in drum for 2 minutes.
This one developed fine but a few others show uneven development with a streak or two across the width of some of my negatives (or may be i have a very peculiar light leak in one of my holder).

There used to be a time when woman science fiction writers would adopt male names just so that they could break into the market. I am glad that those days are over. Connie Willis, an acknowledged Grandmaster of Science Fiction. Great sense of humor. Totally down to earth, talking to her is like talking to someone's mom, which she is, as we are friends with her daughter. She is also incredibly tolerant and gracious: my earlier photos of her were lacking (my fault entirely) and she did not hesitate to stand in front of the camera for me again.

Here is Vijayut Totrakulchai, who helped me immensely in tracking down and buying collodion in Thailand so I could shoot wet plate. This is a tintype (actually shot on black acrylic sheet), about 5x7 inches, shot with a Fuji 210mm lens and exposed at f8 for 16 seconds.

I'm having some focus issues with it, simple inexperience on my part. The shot was focused and shot at f/5.6, and I figured there'd be some focus movement towards the back, especially using xray film, so I tried to focus a bit ahead of her glasses. When I saw the negs with a magnifier, I thought I'd totally missed and focus was somewhere in the middle of her hair and the front of her face was totally out, but after seeing positives, it doesn't look so bad. It's still a bit of a mystery to me.

Yeah, focusing is the biggest challenge for me when using these type of lenses. My Collinear, which isn't a soft-focus lens, has considerable focus shift as it's stopped down. Furthermore, with a number of these lenses the depth of field seems to be all at and behind what looks sharp on the ground glass. I don't understand this, but Kodak's info on their portrait lenses confirms it, as least with those lenses.

Well the mystery worked out pretty well. The lighting is almost textbook from this Veritar lighting illustration (the successor to the Verito), and I'll bet contact prints would render nicely.

That's pretty funny. You have nailed it except I'm using a hair light instead of background light, for the same purpose--separation, and I put the key, which is a softbox, relatively higher than they would have wanted: the eye highlights are from a nearby window, but in the "printing" I used what I had there. The reflector is a 2x3-foot piece of white foamcore. So at least I have that part right!

That's the nature of a Petzval lens: the center is normal, while the edges are swirly.

It's not just a centre-vs-edge thing, it's a focused-vs-unfocused variation as well.

Near the edges (well, not the extremes), you can still get a fairly-well focused image, i.e. all the light coming from a single point in the scene ends up largely at one point on the film. But where a point is defocused, the light from each scene-point gets spread out (to a first approximation) into an image of the aperture as seen through the rear element. Because of how the petzval rear group works, the defocusing spread is mostly tangential (in circles around the lens axis), with the effect becoming stronger away from the centre (at wider angles, the rear element looks flatter and more-elliptical to the film), while focused regions are mostly un-distorted.

Also a specular highlight thing, and only faster (f/4, or there abouts) Petzvals will swirl. There's a bit of learning to get a Petzval to jump through the hoops...
