Over the years, I've read a number of books on posing. Many of them give examples but not much explanation. Based on good reviews, I recently bought Picture Perfect Posing: Practicing the Art of Posing for Photographers and Models by Roberto Valenzuala. See, for instance: http://www.amazon.com/Picture-Perfect-Posing-Practicing-Photographers/dp/0321966465/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1441136617&sr=8-1&keywords=picture+perfect+posing . I found it very useful. He does a good job explaining the reasons behind his various principles.
Another terrific book on posing is William Mortensen's The Model. It offers lots of useful advice, and it's very funny.
Anyone else have any favorites?

I agree with Mortensen's book. The first edition is better than the last edition or the current reprints.

Another Jim for William. If what he explains isn't enough for one to learn posing and lighting a model, it is time they went another route.

except there is now a book, containing all Mortensens books with modern updates and images + the writers many many years of experience...
Beats them all - but unfortunately it is only in Danish, which is such a shame...

"The Golden Hour." a bio of Herb Ritts is a lot of terrific photos and very interesting reading about his approach. Cheap, used on Amazon.

I can't stand teasers Emil!
sorry - didn't mean to tease...
it is called "Se her" (look here) by Rudy Hass (I have to dig up the isbn, but I fear it has allready sold out).
All the original images (drawings) has been re-photographed by Norwiegian photographer Ragne Sigmond - model was my good friend and former student.
I have some images in the book too...

Thanks! Maybe they can be persuaded to make an English version, even if it's a downloadable pdf.

I have the book, and I am tempted to scan it and make a pdf of it... but it is about 500 pages... and probably not legal...

Among the reviews for this book were quite a few saying it was more for couples and wedding photos. Would you say this is true? I have purchased a copy of Mortensen's book and am looking for more. I need a lot of guidance in fine art/environmental portraiture of pretty girls in nice scenery.

It is aimed at commercial photographers and so includes a lot on wedding stuff, couples and families, but also solo. I do think his approach mechanical, but if you are looking for that it is great!

Suck in the gut.
Keep the profile of the nose inside the cheek.
Rotate the breasts counter to the hips.
Raise the chin enough to remove the fat.
Oh and shoot attractive people to begin with, that is the real key.
