Hi! Hope everyone is gearing up for a great weekend!

I have just completed my first trial scan using my new Epson 4870. How cool!

The exposure is a still life of my son's derby car built for the Boy Scout Derby race coming up in March.

Anyway, I'm having such fun and I had to share the glee :-D

Ellen,

That's a beautiful job! My son just competed recently in a Cub Scout pinewood derby, but sadly didn't come away with a trophy. Nice work on the photo.

Ellen,

Great picture of the pinewood derby car. As for the upcoming race, my adavice, based on experience with my son's pinewood derby car, is to buy some powdered graphite in a hardware store and use it liberally to lubricate the wheels and axles. My son put his weights as far forward on the car as possible on the theory that this positioning would cause the weights to "pull" the car down under the force of gravity. His car was crudely made, but he wiped out the competition. Good luck on the race.

Now you need to try some tilt and swing - to get the back wheel in focus. Good choice of f/stop for selective focus (getting the background out of focus). Good start.

Nice start. My first few shots did not have an image. Keith has the right idea. I always Put the weights on the front and lots of graphite. Speed over looks was my motto and never walked away from a pine derby empty handed.

Ellen, I hate you. Your first scan looks excellent and mine looks like crap. Once I make a scan that looks vaguely like the transparency I will post a link here. BTW, I was using the Silverfast plug-in in Photoshop CS. What scanning software were you using?

LOL Edward! Don't hate me because I'm beaut... er, I mean lucky! For that scan, I just used Epson's software (via the import option in Photoshop). I made use of the auto exposure mode but sharpened the image myself after the scan.

To be honest, I was a little worried after reading about others having problems getting a good scan. So I just decided to keep it simple and go with what looked good to me. You'll get there, Edward, don't worry :-)

Beautiful, Edward, both of them! Did you use Silverfast again or the Epson software?

Yes I used Silverfast again and yes we still have snow, although I can see most of my driveway for a change. Happy three days til spring. Glad you liked the pictures too.
