From what I can tell from my searching they would normally be used for color separations by printers, but I do remember that some early color images were made in a similar way. Can anyone add some definitive information?

I think the only reason they are marked TRICOLOR is to indicate they fit a tri-color camera. That is a camera that has one lens and three film holders, each with a red, green or blue filter in front of the holder. Google tri-color camera. Here is one particularly good image (http://auction-team.de/new_highlights/2008_09/ph/093_b%20%A9%202008%20by%20Auction%20Team%20Breker%20K%F6ln%20Germany.jpg).

That makes a lot of sense. I was looking for references to tricolor plates, but aside from the backing, they are probably just plates. I'm still interested to know more about this system.
